The Night Tiger
The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo is $2.99! This was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick for me, as I loved Choo’s The Ghost Bride. It’s a mix of historical fiction, mythology, romance, and magical realism. Have you read this one?
A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers.
When 11-year-old Ren’s master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his master’s soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace.
Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mother’s Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lin’s dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner.
As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Ren’s lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.

The Medieval Hearts Series
The Medieval Hearts Series by Laura Kinsale is $1.99 at select vendors! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this one. The page count is nearly 2000 pages, which seems odd for two romances. Or are they really that long?
The complete medieval romance series by a New York Times–bestselling author who “creates magic” (Lisa Kleypas).
In this pair of unforgettable romances set in fourteenth-century Europe, the New York Times–bestselling author and RITA Award winner once again proves “no one—repeat no one—writes historical romance better than Laura Kinsale” (Mary Jo Putney, New York Times–bestselling author). Special to these ebook editions, each novel is presented in two versions, the first re-creating Middle English dialogue with deep period detail, the second reworked by the author to be a tighter read, with more modern words for dialogue. Whichever you decide to read, you’ll come away agreeing with New York Times–bestselling author Julia Quinn: “Laura Kinsale’s work is unfailingly brilliant and beautiful.”
For My Lady’s Heart: With Princess Melanthe di Monteverde widowed, a political marriage would tip the balance of power to any kingdom that possessed her. Determined to return to England alive and unwed, she hides behind a mask of witchery. Protecting her is Ruck d’Angleterre, a chivalrous knight who never wavers—and the only man Melanthe wishes could lift the veil of her disguise. He once desired her, but now his gaze reveals distrust. As they flee her enemies, Melanthe’s impossible love for the knight only grows . . .
Shadowheart: As the last unmarried princess of Monteverde, Elayne is trapped when her hand is promised to the land’s ruler. But on the voyage to meet her betrothed, she is captured by a pirate, Allegreto Navona—and soon finds her captor impossible to resist. Trained as an assassin, Allegreto is the bastard son of an ambitious lord who raised him to murder for control of Monteverde. If Allegreto can make Elayne his wife, the country will be his. But she is no mere maiden to be possessed. As he finds himself falling in love with her, Elayne will prove his greatest challenge . . .

@SBAmanda:
It looks like that duology includes extras. That would account for the extra length.
I love Laura Kinsale and am always hoping a new book will be released.
How young adult is The Shadows Between Us?
The Night Tiger is a fine novel – it’s got a few flaws but I’d put it around a B+. Well worth your time.
Buy the Kinsale if you don’t own those! They’re worth every penny.
The Night Tiger was a captivating read, and definitely a steal at $2.99!
@Varian. I listened to The Shadows Between Us and didn’t think they were young. The personalities were old. My main problem with YA is that most storylines are finding yourself, self-discovery, blah blah blah. These characters KNOW who they are and couldn’t care less what others think of them.
I’m not a fan of Gone with the Wind but there were many times when I thought “This must be what it is like to be in Scarlett’s head”.
Just how Old Skool are the Kinsale books? I’ve never read her but am intrigued by the cover copy and the sale price.
For My Lady’s Heart and Shadowheart are both written in Middle English. In the ebooks, Kinsale released a modern condensed version alongside the original. So that’s why the box set is so many pages!
In terms of how Old Skool they are, I read them for the first time earlier this year and loved both. FMLH is my favorite Kinsale—she’s a gorgeous writer. The last paragraph/sentence of chapter 16 is one of the best I’ve ever read. I’m still fanning myself! But both books for sure have content warnings and aspects that don’t hold up well, particularly Shadowheart. I’m astounded I wound up loving Shadowheart since SPOILER: the hero kidnaps the heroine, coerces her into marriage, and then essentially rapes her. If I hadn’t first met the hero in FMLH, there’s no way I would have hung in there but Kinsale does manage to redeem him. But I get that it will not be for everyone.
Can someone explain to me how people got the notion that the Kinsale books were “written in Middle English”? Nobody but a few Chaucer scholars would be able to read them if they were. I just read the first five pages of Shadowheart, which I happened to have on my Kindle, and I can tell you that they were less archaic than Shakespeare or the King James Bible, both of which were written in Modern English. (I once went straight from The Book of the Duchess to As You Like It, and the Shakespeare seemed really modern by comparison.)
@Etv13. In my paper copy of FMLH, in the acknowledgments, I believe is where I read it, Kinsale says readers might like to know that someone had translated it into Middle English, not that she had written it in that language.
The shadows between us kind of read as older than YA. It is however a weird book. I DNFd because while I was interested in a sociopath heroine I didn’t find her POV an interesting Place to be. I’m all for “unlikeable heroines “ and this was such an interesting idea but it just didn’t work for me.
