Luck of the Draw

Luck of the Draw by Kate Clayborn is $2.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! If you grabbed the previous book in the series when it was on sale, now you can grab the next one! This one has enemies entering into a fake relationship, which is all sorts of my catnip. Can I read this one out of order?
Buying a lotto ticket with her two best friends didn’t change Zoe’s life. Only following her heart would do that…
Sure, winning the lottery allows Zoe Ferris to quit her job as a cutthroat corporate attorney, but no amount of cash will clear her conscience about the way her firm treated the O’Leary family in a wrongful death case. So she sets out to make things right, only to find gruff, grieving Aiden O’Leary doesn’t need—or want—her apology. He does, however, need something else from her. Something Zoe is more than willing to give, if only to ease the pain in her heart, a sorrow she sees mirrored in his eyes…
Aiden doesn’t know what possesses him to ask his family’s enemy to be his fake fiancée. But he needs a bride if he hopes to be the winning bid on the campground he wants to purchase as part of his beloved brother’s legacy. Skilled in the art of deception, the cool beauty certainly fits the bill. Only Aiden didn’t expect all the humor and heart Zoe brings to their partnership—or the desire that runs deep between them. Now he’s struggling with his own dark truth—that he’s falling for the very woman he vowed never to forgive.

Here’s Looking at You by Mhairi McFarlane is 99c! This is described as a rom-com, but several review mention it’s a bit more serious than it seems. The heroine was bullied heavily in school and thinks the hero had a hand in her previous torment. Have you read this one?
The next hysterical romantic (mis)adventure from the internationally bestselling Mhairi McFarlane, author of You Had Me at Hello.
What if the last person you wanted to see was the person you needed?
Here’s Looking At You is, in essence, an ugly duckling tale. Our heroine Anna returns to school after fifteen years for a reunion. School doesn’t hold happy memories for her, as being a roly poly Italian (known as the Italian Galleon), and always armed with a Tupperware full of pungent Mediterranean food, she was bullied incessantly throughout her years there.
Now in her 30s, Anna wants to put the past behind her once and for all and face up to the bullies who made her life hell. But she is much-changed from the girl she once was – all curves and because I’m worth it hair – and no one recognizes her when she arrives. Losing her cool, she backs out on her plan for revenge and slinks off, hoping never to be reminded of her years at school again.
But fate gets in the way, and after the reunion her path keeps crossing with James – major hunk and Anna’s major crush back at school. But alas, as a crony to the bullies, Anna to this day believes that his beautiful exterior hides an ugly interior. As they continue to cross paths a love/hate relationship ensues until eventually something shifts, and they both start to discover what the person underneath is really like…
Full of laugh out loud humor, Here’s Looking At You is a novel about facing your demons and being happy with who you really are.

RECOMMENDED: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo is $2.99! Elyse LOVED this book and gave it an A+:
If you love thrillers with a little romance (or romance with A LOT of thriller) and you want something totally different from what’s being published right now, go buy this book. You won’t be disappointed.
A killer is preying on sacred ground….
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and “English” residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.
Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She’s certain she’s come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

Swords of the Guardian by Merry Shannon is $3.99 at Amazon! Reader Heather S. previously sent us in an email about this title and said:
It’s f/f fantasy romance. I waited a long time (a couple of years, at least) for it to drop in price from $9.99, and I don’t know how long it will stay this price.
I know several readers who want more F/F romance in their lives! Plus, it has a bodyguard/royal pairing, which is a heavy dose of catnip.
A shocking assassination creates an unconventional bond between a princess and her guardian in a kingdom filled with political intrigue, danger and unexpected romance. Princess Shasta Soltranis enjoys a pampered life of court dances, elaborate finery, and the occasional secret fencing match with her twin brother, Daric. But in the midst of a birthday celebration, her world shatters when a mysterious assassin takes her brother’s life. Shasta, the only remaining heir to the throne, narrowly escapes the assassin’s blade thanks to the intervention of a traveling acrobat named Talon.
With the threat of another attempt on Shasta’s life imminent, her father declares that the young hero will be come the Princess’s bodyguard. But what Shasta doesn’t know is that her new guardian has a very well-kept secret: he is actually a she. Talon and Shasta soon grow closer than anyone, especially her father, could have predicted. Will the truth of her guardian’s secret change their relationship forever?

For Amazon US customers, Leonard Tourney’s THE PLAYER’S BOY IS DEAD is free right now. My sister-in-law, who takes history seriously, enjoyed this series of Shakespearean mysteries quite a lot.
Went right away to get the Mhairi McFarlane book. Highly recommend her books! I noticed something on AmazonUS when I went to purchase. There is a 3-book bundle for $5.99 which includes the above Here’s Looking at You plus You Had Me At Hello and It’s Not Me It’s You for anyone interested. Right now it’s a steal since the other two books alone are not discounted. I would have scooped this up myself but I have the other two books already. Like I said I highly recommend Mhairi McFarlane for anyone who enjoys lighter contemporaries.
I like HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU but I would not describe it as lighthearted and it definitely hits many bully romance tropes. It’s hard to provide content notes without giving major spoilers here unfortunately! I think it’s probably Mhairi McFarlane’s darkest romance, even more so than DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME, which I couldn’t finish because it was personally pretty triggering.
I could NOT put down the Linda Castillo book but hoo boy it is dark dark dark dark dark. ALL the trigger warnings for violence, explicit sexual assault, torture, murder. That said, it’s so well-written and seems very knowledgable about and respectful of Amish culture. It’s not a romance, but if you enjoy a (GRUESOME! did I mention GRUESOME?) thriller in which two damaged people work together to solve a crime (and are attracted to each other even if a HEA feels very faint, at least at this point) and there’s a hint of the possibility of one or both of them healing, you will enjoy this. I can’t stop thinking about it…but I also haven’t ordered any of the other books in the series or borrowed them from the library because during a pandemic I need more fluffiness in my escapism.
@Darlynne thanks for the tip!
That Claybiurn book sounds like 17 degrees of angst, so… CLICK!!!
I read Here’s Looking At You years ago but remember being incredibly pissed at the lack of grovel from the hero. The heroine’s entire life has been defined by her low self-esteem and body image issues from being bullied in school and the popular boy hero who was a huge part of that doesn’t even remember her! Because she’s hot now the heroine eventually has to apologize to the bully hero for (secret identity?) not jogging his memory about being his victim. That’s the conflict.
@marjorie, AGREE. It is unbelievably dark and also un-put-down-able. The second one is good as well…dark but compulsively readable. It’s definitely a grim thriller with a very thin strand of romance. I gave up after the second one because I couldn’t keep up with the violence.
@Thank you, AmyM, for the Mhairi McFarland heads up on sales prices. I’ve only read her latest, _If I Never Met You_, and just loved it. I can’t believe I’ve missed out on this author before now.
@GraceElizabeth – Interesting that you found McFarland dark. I didn’t find her new release particularly dark though there were some serious issues. I’m curious to read more from her for comparison.
The Clayborn is my favorite in the series and yes can be read out of order. CW for death of a sibling and drug abuse but off page
