The Rook

RECOMMENDED: The Rook by Daniel O’Malley $2.99 and part of today’s KDD offerings. Carrie loves the series, especially the sequel Stiletto. It’s urban fantasy set in London with a badass cast of characters. But some found the book to have a lot of info-dumping. Have you read The Rook?
“The body you are wearing used to be mine.” So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.
She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.
In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.
Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

The Earl Not Taken by A.S. Fenichel is 99c at Amazon! It is full price elsewhere. This is the first book in The Wallflowers of West Lane series and I like the cover for this one. Readers liked the heroine, but found the plot to be rather thing. Any thoughts from the Bitchery?
Left standing on the side while their contemporaries marry into society, four young ladies forge a bond to guard each other from a similar fate . . .
Finishing school failed to make a proper lady of Penelope Arrington. But as a Wallflower of West Lane, Poppy has a far more vital role—she and her three best friends have made a pact to protect each other from the clutches of dangerous, disreputable men. So when one of them is about to be married off to a duke sight unseen, Poppy makes it her mission to divine the prospective husband’s true character. If only she didn’t require the aid of London’s most unsuitable rake.
Rhys Draper, Earl of Marsden, has known the headstrong Poppy since she was a young girl naïve to the ways of men. To her eternal chagrin—and to his vague amusement—they have been at odds over the memory of embarrassing first encounter all these years. Now, with his services in need, Rhys sees a chance to finally clear the air between them. Instead, he is surprised by the heat of their feelings. If the two do not tread carefully, they may end up in a most agreeably compromising position . . .

My Once and Future Duke by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is the first book in The Wagers of Sin historical romance series. Elyse wasn’t a fan of this book because she’s over heroes using heroines as pawns for revenge. However, others loved how the romance developed between the two main characters.
What happens at the infamous Vega Club . . .
Sophie Campbell is determined to be mistress of her own fate. Surviving on her skill at cards, she never risks what she can’t afford to lose. Yet when the Duke of Ware proposes a scandalous wager that’s too extravagant to refuse, she can’t resist. If she wins, she’ll get five thousand pounds, enough to secure her independence forever.
Stays at the Vega Club . . .
Jack Lindeville, Duke of Ware, tells himself he’s at the Vega Club merely to save his reckless brother from losing everything, but he knows it’s a lie. He can’t keep his eyes off Sophie, and to get her he breaks his ironclad rule against gambling. If he wins, he wants her—for a week.
Until now.
A week with Jack could ruin what’s left of Sophie’s reputation. It might even cost her her heart. But when it comes to love, all bets are off . . .

If He’s Sinful by Hannah Howell is $1.99! This is the second book in the paranormal historical Wherlocke series. Some reader mention the hero is kind of an asshat at first, though many found the heroine strong and feisty. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

It is whispered throughout London that the members of the Wherlocke family are possessed of certain unexplainable gifts. But Lord Ashton Radmoor is skeptical—until he finds an innocent beauty lying drugged and helpless in the bedroom of a brothel.

The Rook and Stiletto are both fantastic. Stiletto is slightly better (and is on track to be my favorite book of 2020), but Rook is still really good. Think A+ and A+++
@MirandaB: I’m in total agreement, will read anything O’Malley writes. Also, for those who’ve read or will read the books, DO NOT watch the cable adaptation, if it’s even available. What the Starz writers did to Myfanwy is character assassination and I won’t have it. Carry on.
Medicine Man (previously Mystic Cowboy) by Sarah M Anderson is $0.00 on Kindle right now – probably because it looks like there’s a new one out in the series (Men of the White Sandy). The series is a total comfort read for me, but not being a part of the Native American community, I can’t speak to how good the representation is, so MMV.
@Darlynne, yeah, BookMyfanwy is AT LEAST 5000% more badass than ShowMyfanwy. I don’t know wth they were doing.
I had no idea Hannh Howell’s doing historical paranormals now!
I absolutely love The Rook. There is a lot of information being shared, but it forms an important part of the story and it’s so engaging. I reread it frequently when I’m anxious because so many of the sequences feature people being incredibly competent and that’s so soothing to me. Highly recommend it and the sequel.
Lisa F, Hanna Howell has been doing historical paranormals for more than 15 years.
I wish Daniel O’Malley would do a third. The Rook is one of my top favorites.
It is infodump-y, but the heroine has amnesia, so duh!
The Rook is one of my favorite books of the last decade but I couldn’t get into Stilleto because Myfawny isn’t the main character anymore.
I love The Rook and actually found Stiletto far more info-dumpy and a bit overstuffed. I agree with EJ that the sequel suffers from dropping Myfanwy. Both are worth a read.
I thought Myfanwy showed up sufficiently in all her glory in Stiletto, even though she isn’t the lead bit YMMV. I obsessively watch for O’Malley’s FB posts to see if he announces he’s writing a new book.
I learned recently that S.A. Chakraborty is actually a white woman — the S stands for Shannon. While I hope that doesn’t detract anyone’s enjoyment of it, I know I wasn’t the only one who was under the impression it was an own voices kind of book, and they were supporting a writer of color. 🙁
S.A. Chakraborty talks about her background here. Yes, she is white and very aware of her privilege, also a converted Muslim with a college degree in the area she writes about. https://www.sachakraborty.com/about.html
I did not know anything about her when I read City of Brass a couple years ago. I saw an Arabian Nights fantasy adventure and dived right in. The first half is awesome, then it got a bit too bloody and violent for me so proceed with caution.
P.S. I am not middle eastern either but I grew up with Shaharazad’s tales of 1001 nights along with fairy tales and myths from all over the world.
But late to this but I downloaded The Room as it was on kindle unlimited. Judging by the Goodreads reviews it’s rather a Marmite book with readers either loving it or hating it and sorry, I’m the latter. I found the italics and info dumping irritating and felt there was a better story going on behind the scenes. I don’t want to read a report about a woman manifesting animals out of ectoplasm, I want to read about the characters experiencing it! I gave up by chapter six, also the Americanisms in a book set in England by an English character was really jarring.
Sorry but I’m glad you all like it even if I can’t see why.
