Hide Your Wallet

August’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Drowned Country

    Drowned Country by Emily Tesh

    Author: Emily Tesh
    Released: August 18, 2020 by Tor.com
    Genre: , ,
    Series: The Greenhollow Duology #2

Drowned Country is the the stunning sequel to Silver in the Wood, Emily Tesh’s lush, folkloric debut. This second volume of the Greenhollow duology once again invites readers to lose themselves in the story of Henry and Tobias, and the magic of a myth they’ve always known.

Even the Wild Man of Greenhollow can’t ignore a summons from his mother, when that mother is the indomitable Adela Silver, practical folklorist. Henry Silver does not relish what he’ll find in the grimy seaside town of Rothport, where once the ancient wood extended before it was drowned beneath the sea―a missing girl, a monster on the loose, or, worst of all, Tobias Finch, who loves him.

Catherine: I loved and adored Silver in the Wood – this is the second half of the story and it is equally adorable and wonderful. So excited that it is finally coming out!

  • Loathe at First Sight

Loathe at First Sight by Suzanne Park

    Author: Suzanne Park
Released: August 4, 2020 by Avon
    Genre: ,

In a debut perfect for fans of Jasmine Guillory and Sally Thorne, a junior video game producer finds herself getting closer and closer to the one person she hates most after a mass troll attack online almost ruins her life.

Melody Joo is thrilled to land her dream job as a video game producer, but her new position comes with its share of challenges. Namely, an insufferable CEO and a team that consists of mostly male co-workers who make the term “misogyny” pale in comparison to their obnoxious comments. Then there’s the infuriating—yet distractingly handsome—intern Nolan McKenzie, a.k.a. “the guy who got hired because his uncle is the boss”.

Just when Melody thinks she’s made the worst career move of her life, her luck changes on a dime. While joking with a friend, she creates a mobile game that has male strippers fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Suddenly, Melody’s “joke” is her studio’s most high-profile project—and Melody’s running the show.

When Nolan is appointed a key member of her team, Melody’s sure he’ll be useless. But as they grow closer, she sees he’s smart and sexy, which makes Melody want to forget he’s her intern. As their attraction deepens, she knows it’s time to pump the brakes even with her Korean parents breathing down her neck to hurry up and find a man. But she’s here to work—and nothing more. All she has to do is resist the wild thoughts coursing through her mind whenever Nolan is near. Easy . . . or so she thinks.

With her pet project about to launch, Melody suddenly faces a slew of complications, including a social media trolling scandal that could end her career. She suspects one of her co-workers is behind the sabotage and is determined to find out who betrayed her. Could the man she’s falling hard for help her play the game to win—in work and love?

    Sneezy: Yes.

    Author: Jordan Ifueko
Released: August 18, 2020 by Amulet Books
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Raybearer #1

The epic debut YA fantasy from an incredible new talent—perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi and Sabaa Tahir

Nothing is more important than loyalty.
But what if you’ve sworn to protect the one you were born to destroy?

Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady. The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of 11. If she’s picked, she’ll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood. That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere. But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: Kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust. Tarisai won’t stand by and become someone’s pawn—but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself? With extraordinary world-building and breathtaking prose, Raybearer is the story of loyalty, fate, and the lengths we’re willing to go for the ones we love.

Ellen: Is it weird that I love fantasy stories about young women rebelling against their creepy moms?

Shana: I’ve been looking forward to this book since the beginning of time.

    The Switch by Beth O'Leary

    Author: Beth O'Leary
Released: August 18, 2020 by Flatiron Books
    Genre: ,

Eileen is sick of being 79.
Leena’s tired of life in her twenties.
Maybe it’s time they swapped places…

When overachiever Leena Cotton is ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, she escapes to her grandmother Eileen’s house for some overdue rest. Eileen is newly single and about to turn eighty. She’d like a second chance at love, but her tiny Yorkshire village doesn’t offer many eligible gentlemen.

Once Leena learns of Eileen’s romantic predicament, she proposes a solution: a two-month swap. Eileen can live in London and look for love. Meanwhile Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire. But with gossiping neighbours and difficult family dynamics to navigate up north, and trendy London flatmates and online dating to contend with in the city, stepping into one another’s shoes proves more difficult than either of them expected.

Leena learns that a long-distance relationship isn’t as romantic as she hoped it would be, and then there is the annoyingly perfect – and distractingly handsome – school teacher, who keeps showing up to outdo her efforts to impress the local villagers. Back in London, Eileen is a huge hit with her new neighbours, but is her perfect match nearer home than she first thought?

Catherine: Ooh, I read an ARC of this months ago, back when it was going to be published in April, and I have been waiting and waiting for other people to get the chance to read it! It’s so adorable, and Eileen is the adventurous and meddling elderly woman that I aspire to be when I am in my seventies.

  • Here to Stay

Here to Stay by Adriana Herrera

    Author: Adriana Herrera
Released: August 25, 2020 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,

Starting over is more about who you’re with than where you live…

Julia del Mar Ortiz is not having the best year.

She moved to Dallas with her boyfriend, who ended up ditching her and running back to New York after only a few weeks. Left with a massive—by NYC standards, anyway—apartment and a car lease in the scorching Texas heat, Julia is struggling…except that’s not completely true. Running the charitable foundation of one of the most iconic high fashion department stores in the world is serious #lifegoals.

It’s more than enough to make her want to stick it out down South.

The only monkey wrench in Julia’s plans is the blue-eyed, smart-mouthed consultant the store hired to take them public. Fellow New Yorker Rocco Quinn’s first order of business? Putting Julia’s job on the chopping block.

When Julia is tasked with making sure Rocco sees how valuable the programs she runs are, she’s caught between a rock and a very hard set of abs. Because Rocco Quinn is almost impossible to hate—and even harder to resist.

Aarya: Herrera’s new series is set in Texas (a departure from NY setting in earlier books), and the blurb looks fun!

Love comes when you least expect it in this captivating new novel in the Wescott Regency romance series from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.

Ever practical, however, once she’s twenty-five, she decides it’s time to wed. Though she no longer believes she will find true love, she is still very eligible. She is, after all, the sister of Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby.

Jessica considers the many qualified gentlemen who court her. But when she meets the mysterious Gabriel Thorne, who has returned to England from the New World to claim an equally mysterious inheritance, Jessica considers him completely unsuitable, because he had the audacity, when he first met her, to announce his intention to wed her.

    Author: Sabrina Jeffries
Released: August 25, 2020 by Zebra Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: Duke Dynasty #3

Stepsiblings in search of the truth about their mother’s succession of beloved husbands—and their own surprising identities as eligible young nobles—are the endearing stars of this dazzling series from New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries . . .

A past kiss with adorably bookish Miss Olivia Norley should be barely a memory for Marlowe Drake, the Duke of Thornstock. After all, there are countless debutantes for a handsome rakehell to charm beyond a young lady whose singular passion is chemistry—of the laboratory type. But Thorn has not forgotten—or forgiven—the shocking blackmail scheme sparked by that single kiss, or the damage caused to both their names. Now Thorn’s half-brother, Grey, has hired the brilliant Miss Norley for her scientific expertise in solving a troubling family mystery. And the once-burned Thorn, suspicious of her true motives, vows to follow her every move . . .

For Olivia, determining whether arsenic poisoning killed Grey’s father is the pioneering experiment that could make her career—and Thorn’s constant presence is merely a distraction. But someone has explosive plans to derail her search. Soon the most unexpected discovery is the caring nature of the reputed scoundrel beside her—and the electricity it ignites between them . . .

Catherine: Sabrina Jeffries is always a comfort read for me. The premise of this series is extremely silly, but I’m still going to be reading this the moment it comes out.

But when Will encounters a face from the past in a disreputable nightclub, Kim turns up, as shifty, unreliable, and irresistible as ever. And before Will knows it, he’s been dragged back into Kim’s shadowy world of secrets, criminal conspiracies, and underhand dealings.

This time, though, things are underhanded even by Kim standards. This time, the danger is too close to home. And if Will and Kim can’t find common ground against unseen enemies, they risk losing everything.

A 1920s m/m romance trilogy in the spirit of Golden Age pulp fiction.

Claudia: Second installment in the newest K.J. Charles series, set in the 1920s. What’s not to like!

Shana: This first book was a delight, and I’m glad we didn’t have to wait long for sexy boy-spies, part two.

Released: August 27, 2020 by Canelo Escape
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Escape to Tuscany #1

Lucy needed a change of scene. She didn’t expect the change of a lifetime.

Doctors Without Borders has been Lucy Young’s life for the past four years. After being rescued from a conflict zone, she’s making a change from saving lives under gunfire to practising medicine in safe, serene Siena.

Now treating wealthy patients at a private clinic, she’s never felt less comfortable. She’s used to helping those in dire need – not those in need of a nip and tuck. Her turmoil grows when she encounters injured tennis star David Lorenzo, whose smiles make Lucy forget her aversion to the rich.

She’s soon falling for the sportsman but is she losing herself in this world of excess? All she’s ever wanted was to help the underprivileged, so can her future lie in Siena at the clinic – with David?

This sunny romance is the perfect summer escape for fans of Lucy Coleman and Alex Brown.

Catherine: I know nothing about this author, but it is freezing cold in Melbourne right now and I am here for a virtual holiday in Italy.

I’ve been waiting a year for Beth O’Leary’s The Switch, having adored her first novel, The Flatshare. I’m so happy it’s getting good reviews from many reviewers, including here. Very much looking forward to it next week.

I want to read Ilona Andrews’s Emerald Blaze, but I haven’t read the first in Catalina’s trilogy. Glad though that it too is getting some good buzz.

@Aarya, no, you can not. There’s a lot of history you’ll probably need to know for Season of the Wolf. I think a lot of people believed Forever Wolf was the last book in the series, but I’m pretty happy they were wrong. We get a lot of back and forth about this series among the bitchery, but I really enjoy it. The take on werewolf mythology is original and the writing is beautiful. Here werewolves are mostly are mostly wolves, and they act like it. Oh, and shall I just point out second female Alpha of the year!!

This was really the only book on my list for NR pt II, but the bitchery has come through and The Switch is safely added to my reserve list at the GBPL.

Next week, I have two books queued up, but both have previously been postponed from earlier release dates, so am hoping for the best but preparing to see they’ve been postponed once more: Sybil Bartel’s SHAMELESS, the next in her Alpha Bodyguards series, and Ainsley Booth’s FILTHY LIAR, the fifth (and final?) book in her Forbidden Bodyguards series. Yeah, “bodyguard and client” is one of my favorite tropes.

Also, it’s been a while since I read anything by Melanie Harlow, but she’s got an opposites-attract (mechanic & debutante), small-town romance called DRIVE ME WILD that caught my interest and is scheduled for release on August 24. And one of my “dark romance” favorites, Natasha Knight, is releasing UNHOLY UNION in August 25, but it’s the first book of a duet, so I will probably wait until the second book, UNHOLY INTENT, is released in September and read the two books together. Based on the synopsis, the duet appears to be a “forced mafia marriage” story with some revenge thrown in for good measure.

Lots of good ones this month; out of this particular pile, I can already confirm the Herrera is amazing.

  5. MaryK says:

I’ve been impatiently waiting to hear about The Switch. I loved The Flat-Share but it was so strongly marketed as not romance even though the plot suggested romance that I’m worried it was a fluke. Particularly since this plot so strongly suggests women’s fiction.

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I knew it! I predicted it! I just checked and Ainsley Booth’s FILTHY LIAR has been postponed until September 15. Ah well, as the old saying goes, “Hope for the best, expect the worst.”

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

I cannot wait for the new KJ Charles—I loved Slippery Creatures. It’s like Lord Peter Wimsey walked into a romance novel. It’s delightful and I have high hopes for the second installment!

  8. Vivi12 says:

Just preordered the new KJ Charles, she can do no wrong, and I loved Slippery Creatures

  9. regencyfan93 says:

I just pre-ordered Kelly Farmer’s Out on the Ice. I watch women’s college hockey, one women’s professional hockey game before COVID, and read m/m hockey romance. This sounds like my catnip!

  10. MeMe says:

I LOVE The Legend of All Wolves series SO MUCH! The audiobooks for the first 2 are the fucking BEST! But there’s no audiobook for the 3rd book! And I’m stubborn enough to keep waiting and hoping… I don’t want to break down and try to push past my pandemic attention span to read it with my eyeballs just to have an audiobook pop up when I finish. I have hours of dog walking and laundry to fill- I can’t waste a zero-disappointment series

  11. SusanK says:

Starting a Hidden Legacy reread this week in anticipation of EMERALD BLAZE!!!!!!

  12. Laura says:

Finally, we get Lady Jessica’s story! The Someone series is one of my sanity savers this year. I’m looking forward to Switched, too. I don’t read many contemporary romances but this one has a favorite trope–switched–so I’m all in.

  13. Cassandra says:

I can confirm that Emerald Blaze is amazing and I honestly don’t know how Ilona Andrews can keep outdoing themselves. I also read and reviewed an ARC of Someone to Romance and it was one of my favorites in the Westcott series. Waiting on The Switch!

  14. denise says:

    Dating Mr. Darcy sounds fascinating.

  15. Katie says:

I pre-ordered Emerald Blaze and am about to re-read Sapphire Flames ahead of it. I am unbelievably grateful I don’t have to work on release day so I can devour it immediately without interruptions.

Seeing the Maria Vale book on this list reminded me I got the first book in that series for free a while ago, and I really should read it, but for some reason I have not.

  16. JenC says:

Dating Mr. Darcy was just 99 cents at Amazon, so I preordered it. Looks like fun!

  17. Stella says:

Why are there two “Hide the Wallet Part Two”? The other one has only two comments and one of them is also asking this exact question.

  18. @Amanda says:

@Stella: It’s a typo. We started doing Book Beat before the HYW was separated into 2 parts and I just forgot to change the intro. Hide Your Wallet is for new releases and Book Beat is for books we’ve heard about that sound interesting. Sometimes, they fall on the same day in our editorial calendar.

  19. “Hide your wallet” indeed! Thank goodness our public library is back in business with curbside pickup of books on hold!

  20. Darlynne says:

To everyone who mentioned Maria Vale’s werewolf series: I LOVE YOU ALL! I’ve had this book for who-knows-how-long and finally started it the other day because of this post. Chalk up another Bad Decisions Book Club with my thanks.
