Links: Masks, National Parks, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Since I’m traveling, it’s hard to have a concept of time right now. Spending time with my family is like my very own torturous Groundhog Day.

Hope you all are staying safe and comfortable, depending on whichever season you’re experiencing.

Also…it’s July, which always feels like the longest month of the year.

If you’re in the market for new fashionable masks with fabric options, eShakti is now making them! They are a little backed up on orders, so shipping is a bit delayed.

Here are the best virtual tours of museums, zoos, and national parks by state!

I am obsessed by this deep dive into an older climate sci-fi by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and Anne McCaffrey.  Also, can we talk about those jumpsuits on the cover?

Lyssa Kay Adams’ The Bromance Book Club inspired an actual bromance book club. There’s an article on it in the latest Men’s Health.

While many people are buying up all the anti-racist titles right now, this piece in Time stresses the importance of also reading Black fiction. Romance gets a shoutout!

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Jasmine Guillory’s article is great. I *loved* One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams Garcia precisely because of what I learned about a time during which I lived but never experienced.

This: Writing fiction helps me relate with people who have inner and outer lives different from my own. Reading fiction can do the same thing. To which I’ll add: fiction (especially romance) gives me hope.

I know I posted this link earlier this week, but on the off chance someone didn’t see it: LOVE OVER HATE is an online auction to benefit organizations that are fighting systemic racism. Over one hundred romance authors have come together to stand in solidarity with the demands for change happening worldwide and to promote causes that are dedicated to affecting that change. This auction will benefit Fair Fight 501(c), an organization created by romance author and politician, Stacey Abrams, to fight voter suppression. The other 50% will go to the Color of Change. All donations will be made in George Floyd’s name. The auction closes on July 3 and there are some wonderful items up for bid.

I saw a great illustration of COVID spread on Twitter. Going to try linking to it.

I’m in the high risk category so I’m hunkered down at home cringing at all the non-mask wearing people.

I’ve been admiring those eShakti masks all week!

For fans of Fleabag’s Hot Priest and/or the couple in Normal People, Comic Relief made a skit for you:

Sorry, I have no idea why it embedded the video. If there’s a way to take it out and just have the link, please do!

  7. Lynn says:

Ah, I love these link collections, there’s always something new to discover. Thanks to the linked article about the older climate sci-fi novels by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and Anne McCaffrey I now have “Powers That Be” and the sequels on my wishlist (unfortunaltey with new covers).

This Twitter thread about a couple and their idiot son discovering the consequences of voting for Brexit has kept me entertained for days and I’m strangely invested now: https://twitter.com/archer_rs/status/1277505330885386240?s=20

  8. ReadKnitSnark says:

@Lynn Thank you for that! I will have to prepare some popcorn for the Friday meeting with the mayor.

  9. Kate says:

I may have had too much wine when I saw these masks by Maria Popova featuring vintage scientific images because I bought way too many for myself and friends https://society6.com/brainpicker

  10. Penny says:

I took a SF/F writing course with Elizabeth Anne Scarborough fifteen or so years ago. She was a lovely quirky person! (I never actually successfully completed my SF/F book tho… writing is hard!). She had some interesting thought on publishing and surviving as an author in the 90s/00s.

I recently reread Anne McCaffrey’s Moreta because… pandemic. I loved that book when I was younger. It’s still very good but here are some problematic elements I recognize now. I’m afraid to do a reread of the Harper Hall trilogy now. I don’t want to ruin it for myself – it was a pretty formative for me.
