Skinwalker

Skinwalker by Faith Hunter is $1.99! This is a price-matched Kindle Daily Deal! It’s the first book in the urban fantasy Jane Yellowrock series. Reviewers commented that this definitely suffers from “first book-itis,” where a bulk of the book deals with worldbuilding, but the action really picks up during the last half of the book.
First in a brand new series from the author of the rogue mage novels
Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps…

A Modest Independence by Mimi Matthews is 99c! This is book two in the Parish Orphans of Devon series and I know Claudia is a fan of this series. There is a road trip element to this one, but some readers felt it was a little flat. Are you a fan of the series as well?
He Needed Peace…
Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they’re nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can’t remedy. But that’s all over now. He’s finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.
She Wanted Adventure…
Former lady’s companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she’s at it, so much the better.
From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest–and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you…

In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen is $1.99! This is a historical mystery and the first book in a series. Historical mysteries are having a moment, if you’re looking for more books to try. Have you read this one?
World War II comes to Farleigh Place, the ancestral home of Lord Westerham and his five daughters, when a soldier with a failed parachute falls to his death on the estate. After his uniform and possessions raise suspicions, MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is covertly tasked with determining if the man is a German spy. The assignment also offers Ben the chance to be near Lord Westerham’s middle daughter, Pamela, whom he furtively loves. But Pamela has her own secret: she has taken a job at Bletchley Park, the British code-breaking facility.
As Ben follows a trail of spies and traitors, which may include another member of Pamela’s family, he discovers that some within the realm have an appalling, history-altering agenda. Can he, with Pamela’s help, stop them before England falls?
Inspired by the events and people of World War II, writer Rhys Bowen crafts a sweeping and riveting saga of class, family, love, and betrayal.

Meet the Earl at Midnight by Gina Conkle is $1.99! This is book one in the Midnight Meetings series. It has a Beauty and the Beast feel to it and a heroine who wants to get involved in the hero’s scientific work. Readers say it has a slow start, while others loved the introverted hero.
What drove the brilliant recluse to meet her at midnight?
1768…A deadline looms for Lord Edward Sanford, Earl of Greenwich. He needs an heir quickly. The hasty offering of Lydia Montgomery, an on-the-shelf woman, works. Lydia has plans of her own, secret plans that don’t involve a man. But, their agreement, forged in moonlight, changes in the light of day. Edward discovers Lydia’s a woman with a past, but this adds to their sizzling chemistry.
Even worse, the impertinent woman insinuates herself in his scientific work: the domain where no woman should mix. Lydia’s diagrams and illustrations speak volumes…of his work to the outside world and hers to London’s art world—a place reserved for men only. But, newfound fame makes a tangled mess. Will their greatest discovery be each other before time runs out?

I enjoyed the first few Jane Yellowrock books, but what I found the series suffered from was “this guy is an obvious villain oh she’s in love with him now”-itis, which seems to happen EVERY SINGLE TIME an author sets up a love triangle.
Red Flag, the world’s bestselling fragrance for men.
I appreciate the Jane Yellowrock books because they gave us the Soulwood spinoff series, which I ADORE. I’m re-reading them right now in anticipation of the new release later this month!
That said, Ren Benton is 100% correct. And the Yellowrock books can get a little… intensely violent and there’s a book in which something that, by the rules of the world, is basically a rape happens and… I’ve had to take a number of breaks from reading the Jane Yellowrock books. I always come back because it’s damn fine urban fantasy, but the world Faith Hunter has built for both the Yellowrock and Soulwood books is violent as hell and her heroines have an seriously rough go of it.
I really liked the first book in the Mimi Matthews series, but I agree with those who found A Modest Independence a little flat. Still not bad, though, and I definitely plan to continue with the series!
I also didn’t love In Farleigh Field, despite it combining some of my favorite things (historical fiction + spies). I wanted more espionage and more interesting characters.
The Matthews is very good from what I can remember!
I’m a big fan of the Jane Yellowrock books–there are about a dozen of them now–and I don’t think they suffer from a trite in-love-with-a-villain love triangle. Over the series, Jane has two romantic relationships (no real overlap), but neither guy is an “villain” type although both have numerous flaws. She does have an interesting ongoing non-sexual relationship with a more obvious villain (a vampire), but even he a pretty well-developed character, not a one-dimensional baddie.
What I really like about these books–and the spin-off Soulwood series–is that the protagonists have magical abilities, but no innate understanding of what those abilities are, so we get to see them develop over time. Both series are among my “good enough to reread” books.
Totally unrelated to any of the books, but yay, the links are all working again for this Aussie!
I want to buy the Rhys Bowen book, because it sounds like my catnip but I got bored with her other historical mystery series only a couple of books in. Has anyone read them both for comparison? @KitBee’s comment is not making me optimistic.
@Ellie I have read a few of the Her Royal Spyness books and thought they were fun, but I lost interest somewhere along the way. In Farleigh Field is less light and fluffy in tone.
