Books On Sale

Dukes, Mermaids, Witches, Lyons, and More!

It’s the last day of the month, if you’re still keeping track of things like time and suchlike, and there are some great deals at the moment!

  • A Duke by Default

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

RECOMMENDED: A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole is currently $3.99! It was a book of the year on a bunch of sites, including NPR, BookPage, and more. Carrie loved it, giving it an A- in her review, and saying, “I loved A Duke by Default so freaking much…. This is such a solid book – it’s tear-jerking, it’s inspiring, it’s sexy and romantic, it’s interesting (sword history!) and it’s funny.” I mean, it’s a Cole on sale, so if you don’t have this one already, go for it!

New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice—and his attraction to her—but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

  • Sea Witch

    Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning is $1.99! This is a Little Mermaid retelling that focuses on Ursula’s origin story. Carrie reviewed it as well, saying, “Fans of romantic YA and fans of dark retellings of fairy tales will want to check out The Sea Witch. The Sea Witch is both a YA retelling and prequel of The Little Mermaid.” Heads up, though, as most of it is first-person, present-tense, with some parts are told in flashback from third-person point of view. I know that irritates some readers.

Wicked meets The Little Mermaid in the captivating origin story of the sea’s most iconic villainess, perfect for fans of Heartless and Dorothy Must Die.

Ever since her best friend Anna died, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. Hiding her talents, mourning her loss, drowning in her guilt.

Then a girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears on the shore, and the two girls catch the eyes of two charming princes. Suddenly Evie feels like she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But magic isn’t kind, and her new friend harbors secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad—or on two legs—without Evie’s help. And when Evie reaches deep into the power of her magic to save her friend’s humanity—and her prince’s heart—she discovers, too late, what she’s bargained away.

  • The Legend of Lyon Redmond

The Legend of Lyon Redmond by Julie Ann Long

RECOMMENDED: The Legend of Lyon Redmond by Julie Ann Long is $3.99! Elyse reviewed this one and loved it. It’s the last of a series, so you you can either jump in here, or read the whole Pennyroyal Green series, but it should be a delightful decision either way. Elyse, in her review, said, “This book is so much awesomesauce. Doomed youthful love affair + piracy + wedding crashing = win. Also, there’s waterfall sex.”

    So, yeah.

Bound by centuries of bad blood, England’s two most powerful families maintain a veneer of civility . . . until the heir to the staggering Redmond fortune disappears, reviving rumors of an ancient curse: a Redmond and an Eversea are destined to fall disastrously in love once per generation.

    An Enduring Legend

Rumor has it she broke Lyon Redmond’s heart. But while many a man has since wooed the dazzling Olivia Eversea, none has ever won her—which is why jaws drop when she suddenly accepts a viscount’s proposal. Now London waits with bated breath for the wedding of a decade . . . and wagers on the return of an heir.

    An Eternal Love

It was instant and irresistible, forbidden . . . and unforgettable. And Lyon—now a driven, dangerous, infinitely devastating man—decides it’s time for a reckoning. As the day of her wedding races toward them, Lyon and Olivia will decide whether their love is a curse destined to tear their families apart . . . or the stuff of which legends are made.

  • Calling It

    Calling It by Jen Doyle

Calling It by Jen Doyle is $1.99! This is a contemporary sports romance with a “no strings attached” scenario. Many loved the characterization of the hero and heroine and found the romance to be really sweet. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

Baseball player Nathan Hawkins needs to get away from Chicago. After a near career-ending car accident and with paparazzi surrounding his penthouse, Nate can only think of one place to go: home. But when he finds his old apartment occupied by a half-naked woman wielding a baseball bat, he’s not sure what to think…except that maybe his luck has finally changed for the better.

Librarian Dorie Donelli never thought she’d get to meet her fantasy man in person–much less while she’s wearing her bathrobe. To her surprise, her nearly naked run-in with Nate leads to more unclothed encounters. But Dorie is sure their fling is only temporary. As long as she remembers he’ll be gone once his life gets back on track, she won’t get hurt. In the meantime, she throws herself into enjoying their three weeks together before he has to report for spring training and go back to his old life.

For Nate, being with Dorie is the only time in months that he finds himself smiling. Laughing. And he has no intention of letting that go. He might even be falling in love…if only Dorie will let him say the words. What they have isn’t just a dream, but the start of a dream come true.

  1. Ren Benton says:

HUNGER MAKES THE WOLF by Alex Wells is $1.99. “Weird west vibe” in space with “a dash of Dune, a bit of Fury Road, and a whole lot of badass female characters.”

  2. Darlynne says:

@Ren Benton: I saw that and the book’s been in my wish list forever. Why am I having trouble pulling the trigger (ha! surprised myself there) on this one? Have you read it?

  3. Allison R-B says:

Two of Alyssa Cole’s Loyal League books, AN UNCONDITIONAL FREEDOM & A HOPE DIVIDED are on sale for $2.99.

  4. Darlynne says:

Charlie Jane Anders’ THE CITY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT is on sale at Amazon for $2.99.

  5. Ren Benton says:

@Darlynne: I have not yet read it, as it has also been on my wish list forever! If I remember correctly, it’s under the Penguin umbrella, and they’re notoriously stingy with sales (which I need with a new-to-me author).

  6. Tam says:

That Alyssa Cole has the most gorgeous cover. All that slate blue background, with the heroine in that gorgeous gold dress with the light shining on her auburn curls…

  7. Kathlyn says:

@Allison R-B, snapped up the two Loyal League books at once! So happy to get them on sale! Very excited to read them!

  8. Lisa F says:

All of these are lovely choices; Doyle writes some pretty decent small town sports-related romances – I’d put her at around a 3/4 Goodreads-wise or a B to a B- in letter grading.

  9. Beige says:

    @Tam
And here I was thinking that the heroine must have secured a spot in an episode of What Not To Wear.

Agreeing that color scheme is luscious, but to me there are 1980’s crushed velvet couches that pull off abstract patterns better.

  10. Lizzy says:

I HATED The Legend of Lyon Redmond. It was built up through the entire series and ended up being a crashing disappointment. Lyon was a complete and utter asshole. Olivia should have flipped him the bird and married her fiance.

  11. Jazzlet says:

Ren Benton and Darlynne I really liked Hunger Makes the Wolf, but it is the first in a duology/trilogy/series? and while there isn’t a huge cliff hanger the main business of the lot is definitely not finished, so bear that in mind.

  12. AmyS says:

Absolutely loved the JAL book. And I thought that cover was everything and more at capturing the feeling it needed for this couple.

  13. lils says:

@Jazzlet. Blood Binds the Pack Is the second book. Both are 6.99 at Amazon now.
