  • A Hope Divided

A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole

RECOMMENDEDA Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole is $2.99 at select vendors! This is book two in the Loyal League series. Redheadedgirl gave it an A grade:

Cole’s books are always timely, and yet timeless. She has a solid grounding of how to use history in her plots, and knows exactly what story she wants to tell. I could not put this down…

The Civil War has turned neighbor against neighbor–but for one scientist spy and her philosopher soldier, war could bind them together . . .

For three years of the War Between the States, Marlie Lynch has helped the cause in peace: with coded letters about anti-Rebel uprisings in her Carolina woods, tisanes and poultices for Union prisoners, and silent aid to fleeing slave and Freeman alike. Her formerly enslaved mother’s traditions and the name of a white father she never knew have protected her–until the vicious Confederate Home Guard claims Marlie’s home for their new base of operations in the guerilla war against Southern resistors of the Rebel cause.

Unbeknowst to those under her roof, escaped prisoner Ewan McCall is sheltering in her laboratory. Seemingly a quiet philosopher, Ewan has his own history with the cruel captain of the Home Guard, and a thoughtful but unbending strength Marlie finds irresistible.

When the revelation of a stunning family secret places Marlie’s freedom on the line, she and Ewan have to run for their lives into the hostile Carolina night. Following the path of the Underground Railroad, they find themselves caught up in a vicious battle that could dash their hopes of love–and freedom–before they ever cross state lines.

  • The Chocolate Kiss

The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand

RECOMMENDED: The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand is $2.99! This is what Sarah had to say:

I love this book. When I talk about traveling through the books I read, this is a title that comes to mind first. It’s a contemporary romance set in Paris, and it’s the second in a series though I didn’t read the first and was just fine here.

    The Heart of Paris

Welcome to La Maison des Sorcières. Where the window display is an enchanted forest of sweets, a collection of conical hats delights the eye and the habitués nibble chocolate witches from fanciful mismatched china. While in their tiny blue kitchen, Magalie Chaudron and her two aunts stir wishes into bubbling pots of heavenly chocolat chau.

But no amount of wishing will rid them of interloper Philippe Lyonnais, who has the gall to open one of his world famous pastry shops right down the street. Philippe’s creations seem to hold a magic of their own, drawing crowds of beautiful women to their little isle amidst the Seine, and tempting even Magalie to venture out of her ivory tower and take a chance, a taste. . .a kiss.

Parisian princesses, chocolate witches, pâtissier princes and sweet wishes–an enchanting tale of amour et chocolat.

  • Silk is for Seduction

Silk is for Seduction by Loretta Chase

Silk is for Seduction by Loretta Chase is $1.99! We had two guest reviews for this one. Julie gave it an A-:

I really enjoyed this book. Marcelline and her sisters play pre-Victorian Era hardball with their business competitors and the duke. She’s surviving in a man’s world by her wits and her determination.

And Milena also gave it an A-:

I loved Marcelline to bits. She’s a businesswoman, and her work is not just a decoration she’s ready to drop at the first twitch of a duke’s eyebrows. She loves it – all of the fabulous dress designs the Noirot sisters produce are hers – and she doesn’t want to abandon it, even in exchange for a life of luxury.

Brilliant and ambitious dressmaker Marcelline Noirot is London’s rising star. And who better to benefit from her talent than the worst-dressed lady in the ton, the Duke of Clevedon’s intended bride?

Winning the future duchess’s patronage means prestige and fortune for Marcelline and her sisters. To get to the lady, though, Marcelline must win over Clevedon, whose standards are as high as his morals are…not.

The prize seems well worth the risk — but this time Marcelline’s met her match. Clevedon can design a seduction as irresistible as her dresses; and what begins as a flicker of desire between two of the most passionately stubborn charmers in London soon ignites into a delicious inferno…and a blazing scandal.

  • To Kill a Kingdom

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo is $2.99! Carrie picked this one up, though gave it a C. She notes that the writing and concept are wonderful, but really struggled to become invested in the main characters. Have you read this one?

Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most–a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever.

The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby–it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good–But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

THE NIGHT COUNTRY: A HAZEL WOOD NOVEL by Melissa Albert is $2.99. I have THE HAZEL WOOD in my TBR and would ordinarily hesitate to buy a sequel without reading the first, but someone spoke favorably of it again in Whatcha Reading today, so I’m living dangerously.

  2. Aliza_Em says:

Does anyone know if Laura Florand is still writing? I know she was on a break but that was a few years ago. Also, the Alyssa Cole book is fabulous!

  3. Lisa F says:

The Cole and Chase are perfect!

  4. Patricia says:

BTW A Hope Divided is 2.99 at iBooks also (add link?).

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Aliza_Em: I haven’t heard anything specifically, but I haven’t seen anything new by Florand in a while. (She wrote SNOW-KISSED which I thought was one of the loveliest—and saddest—second-chance romances I’ve ever read.) So many favorites have gone radio silent in the last few years. I know I’m always lamenting the lack of new books from Anne Calhoun, Jill Sorenson, Cara McKenna, and recently I realized it’s been over 18 months since Charlotte Stein published anything new and even then it was a short story in a Christmas anthology in 2018. Perhaps we have to add Florand to the list of “writers we wish would publish something new.”

  6. Sarah Peach says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I follow Charlotte Stein on Twitter (she’s lovely) and in addition to rereleasing Reawakening (a zombie apocalypse menage romance) she’s been working on a new novel after being stuck for some time!!

I miss Anne Calhoun and Cara McKenna, too.

  7. Sarah B says:

The Noirot sisters series by Chase didn’t do a whole lot for me. Yet I read them all, go figure. I give them a C – nothing bad or offensive, slightly boring to me.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@SarahPeach: thank you for the update. I look forward to anything new from Charlotte—and I’m so glad to know she’s still writing. Years ago, Charlotte and Cara McKenna and Molly O’Keefe, among others, wrote a blog together. It’s long gone, but they’re all such good writers, and I think Molly may be the only one still publishing regularly.

  9. Allison R-B says:

@Sarah Peach & @DiscoDollyDeb, I’m a fan of Charlotte Stein too. She writes the hottest erotic romance around, & her darker writing scares the stuffing out of me.

  10. Sarah Peach says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, you’re welcome! Man, that blog sounds awesome, sad to hear it’s gone.

@Allison R-B, Just ridiculously hot and funny?! The first time I read one of her stories she had me cracking up and then I was hooked.

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Sarah Peach: I wish I could remember the name of that blog—I know it had the word “wonk” in it, something like Wonk Girl Romances—but none of my searches have yielded anything. Perhaps someone in the Bitchery will remember it. Ruthie Knox is another of the writers who used to post on it—and she’s another writer who no longer appears to be publishing new work, alas!

  12. Kareni says:

Hmmph, that was supposed to be …@DDD!

  13. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Kareni: Just now saw this. Thank you, my friend!

  14. Kareni says:

    You are quite welcome, @DDD!
