  • The Richmond Thief

The Richmond Thief by Lisa Boero

The Richmond Thief by Lisa Boero is 99c! Lara, who is now a reviewer for the site, wrote a previous guest review for this one and it earned a B+:

I was bumbling along in a reading rut, neither excited nor bored, just, well… fine. Then, Lady Trent came along and blew me right out of my rut and into reading heaven. I love her! I want to be her! I want to be her friend! And yes, when talking about her ONLY exclamation marks will do!

Someone is snatching priceless jewels right off the necks of British aristocrats. With his intimate access to the parlors and bedrooms of Regency London, the Richmond Thief strikes again and again. The Bow Street Runners, the city’s only detectives, seem powerless to stop him.

    Enter Althea, lady scientist.

As the young widow of a country gentleman, Lady Althea Trent is introduced to the upper-class social scene as yet another pretty face. But her own scientific inquiries and an invitation to act as an agent of Bow Street with the enigmatic Duke of Norwich propel her into the hunt for the Richmond Thief. The theft of her host’s diamonds and two potential murders only harden Althea’s resolve to find answers to the thief’s identity.

Unfortunately, Althea’s dangerous entanglements with the law and the mysterious duke inexorably lead her to a darkened library—where the masked Richmond Thief awaits.

  • Star Dust

    Star Dust by Emma Barry

Star Dust by Emma Barry and Genevieve Turner is $2.99! This is book one in the Fly Me to the Moon series, which I know Carrie has enjoyed. I’m always hesitant to define this as a historical romance because the time period isn’t that long ago, though it does focus on a historic period in history. What do you think?

    Houston, 1962

Anne-Marie Smith wanted normal: a loving husband, two beautiful kids, and a well-kept house. But when she catches her husband cheating, she decides that normal isn’t worth it. Now in a new city with a new job, she’s trying to find her new normal—but she knows it doesn’t include the sexy playboy astronaut next door.

Commander Kit Campbell has a taste for fast: fast cars, fast planes, and even faster women. But no ride he’s ever taken will be as fast as the one he’s taking into orbit. He’s willing to put up with the prying adoration of an entire country if it will get him into space.

But Anne-Marie and Kit’s inconvenient attraction threatens both normal and fast. As the space race heats up, his ambitions and their connection collide and combustion threatens their plans… and their hearts.

  • The Rogue King

The Rogue King by Abigail Owen

The Rogue King by Abigail Owen is 99c! This is the first book in the Inferno Rising paranormal romance series and I’m intrigued. I miss when paranormal romance was the thing and there was such an embarrassment of riches to choose from. I feel like now, all that’s really left are long series that require a commitment.

Kasia Amon is a master at hiding. Who—and what—she is makes her a mark for the entire supernatural world. Especially dragon shifters. To them, she’s treasure to be taken and claimed. A golden ticket to their highest throne. But she can’t stop bursting into flames, and there’s a sexy dragon shifter in town hunting for her…

As a rogue dragon, Brand Astarot has spent his life in the dark, shunned by his own kind, concealing his true identity. Only his dangerous reputation ensures his survival. Delivering a phoenix to the feared Blood King will bring him one step closer to the revenge he’s waited centuries to take. No way is he letting the feisty beauty get away.

But when Kasia sparks a white-hot need in him that’s impossible to ignore, Brand begins to form a new plan: claim her for himself…and take back his birthright.

  • The Frame-Up

The Frame-Up by Meghan Scott Molin

The Frame-Up by Meghan Scott Molin is 99c at Amazon! This is a quirky mystery with lots of nerdery and I love the bright colors of the cover. However, I gave this one a read and was overwhelmed by all the pop culture references being bandied about. The second book is also out and on sale.

By day she writes comic books. By night, she lives them.

MG Martin lives and breathes geek culture. She even works as a writer for the comic book company she idolized as a kid. But despite her love of hooded vigilantes, MG prefers her comics stay on the page.

But when someone in LA starts recreating crime scenes from her favorite comic book, MG is the LAPD’s best—and only—lead. She recognizes the golden arrow left at the scene as the calling card of her favorite comic book hero. The thing is…superheroes aren’t real. Are they?

When the too-handsome-for-his-own-good Detective Kildaire asks for her comic book expertise, MG is more than up for the adventure. Unfortunately, MG has a teeny little tendency to not follow rules. And her off-the-books sleuthing may land her in a world of trouble.

Because for every superhero, there is a supervillain. And the villain of her story may be closer than she thinks…

  1. Laurel says:

The Fly Me to the Moon series is excellent. I highly recommend all of the books in it – don’t stop at one, read them all. It is an alternate history version of the space program. I gave Star Dust a five star rating, which is pretty rare for me.

  2. Amber says:

I want paranormal romances to be a thing again. Take me off this world

  3. Karen Lauterwasser says:

I just finished reading “The Frame-Up”. I enjoyed it quite a bit. At first, I thought it was just me having trouble following all the characters, but I now realize that was because there was also the whole additional set of names connected to the comic references. I am a fan of romantic suspense, and this book was right in that niche for me. Now to see if my library can supply me with the next book.

  4. Kit says:

Paranormal romances are still out there but I’ve DNF’d a lot lately. Maybe I’m tiring of the same formulaic stuff being written, it definitely needs shaking up a bit, for a start, can we have less alpha holes and insta lust? I don’t mind fated mates, I just want them to get to know each other a bit first. Star Dust, wasn’t interested in the book until alt history was mentioned (my catnip!)

  5. Lisa F says:

Loved The Frame Up and gave it a sold B+; the pop culture stuff was a bit much but the mystery really worked.

Love Barry and Turner’s whole series and it’s worth every penny to buy a volume of it.

  6. fairywine says:

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White is on sale for $1.99. I haven’t read this one yet myself, but White always gives a really interesting premise and unconventional heroines, even when she doesn’t quite hit the mark. And I’m down for anything that fleshes out one of the less developed characters of the Arthurian mythos. Definitely worth checking out. Anyone who can make girl!Vlad the Impaler work is someone who thinks outside the box.

  7. taffygrrl says:

ARGH! The Richmond Thief is available on Kobo as an audiobook but not a book-book. Lisa Boero, if you’re reading this, I will buy your book if I can get it for Kobo!

  8. Susan says:

@taffygrrl: It’s a Kindle Unlimited book, which I think makes it exclusive to Amazon (at least for the time being).

  9. Penny says:

Idk I was underwhelmed by The Richmond Thief. I read this maybe a year ago and it was… fine. Maybe it was a mood I was in? Maybe I should give it another chance… Was anyone else bored with it?

  10. Laura says:

@penny I was meh about it, too

  11. Kris Bock says:

The Richmond Thief is also a free borrow with Amazon prime right now.

  12. LineJM says:

Have to say I miss the good old days of paranormal too. Unfortunately I tried “The Rogue King” and it was a DNF for me. I found the premiss a bit dated, instalove can work, when done well, but the execution here failed to do that for me. The world building was meh, the female lead annoyed me and I was seriously underwhelmed by the level of maturity she showed as a 500 year old person. And with apparently lots of survival skills and knowledge and don’t forget experience! she still turned into sort of a damsel, and don’t get me started on the male lead who was annoyed by having feelings, oh my, and they interfere with my centuries old revenge effort, boohoo. Must avoid. Then for good mesure we throw in a bit of the “misunderstanding” trope, of oh no! the person used me for their goals not for love and affection #is devastated. FFS, you are supposed to be grown up knowledgeable people in what is painted as a seriously precarious situation politically and socially in your hidden society of supernaturals. Calm down and think! And you know, factor in that you have known eachother for only a few days, not really enough time to get to know somebody or build trust. Anyway, at that point if I hadn’t been reading on the kindle I think that the book would have met the wall quite forcibly.
    #rant over.
Anyway, do not recommend, but of course one readers DNF can be full of joy and catnip for somebody else. 🙂

  13. Momo says:

@penny The Richmond Thief was cruising along at a solid D+ for me until a scene in the middle knocked it down from ‘mediocre’ into ‘actively offensive’ territory.

  14. Penny says:

    @Laura – I’m glad I wasn’t the only one!

@Momo – I don’t specifically remember what bothered me about it, but you just convinced me not to waste my time trying to read it again!!

  15. Ms. M says:

@Laurel Does it compare to The Calculating Stars?
