Hollow Kingdom

RECOMMENDED: Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton is $2.99! It’s also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Carrie gave this one an A-, but warns it’s definitely not a romance. Definitely skim her review to see if this book is right for you:
This book broke my heart but it also made me so happy.
One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®.Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn’t quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies–from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim’s loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis–fail to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.
Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

The Dream Hunter by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! This is a standalone historical romance and many reviews say this book is completely bonkers. Some also note that the audio is particularly good. Have you read this one? Is it as crazysauce as everyone says?
To love him is to face her deepest fear . . .
In search of a legendary mare, Lord Winter enters the crucible of the red sands, forging unbreakable bonds of loyalty and trust with his young companion in the desert. For 100 Days by Lara Adrian is 99c at Amazon! This is a contemporary erotic romance and the first in a trilogy, so there MAY be some cliffhanger action going on, but I didn’t see anything about that in any reviews. Readers also recommend this book for fans of alpha heroes, so if that isn’t you bag, you may want to reconsider!
Struggling artist Avery Ross is barely scraping by. Bartending at a trendy New York City restaurant for an overbearing boss and two weeks away from losing her apartment to a condo developer, she’s desperate for a break. So when she’s offered a temporary housesitting job, she takes it.
Living at one of the poshest addresses in Manhattan is like entering a new world–one that catapults her into the orbit of billionaire Dominic Baine, the darkly handsome, arrogantly alpha resident of the building’s penthouse. What begins as a powerful attraction soon explodes into a white-hot passion neither can deny.
Yet as scorching as their need for each other is, Avery doesn’t expect Nick’s interest in her to last. Nor does she dare to dream that the desire she feels for this scarred, emotionally remote man could deepen into something real. For Avery has secrets of her own–and a past that could destroy her . . . and shatter everything she and Nick share.
FOR 100 DAYS is the first novel in a passionate new contemporary romance trilogy from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.

Best Laid Plans by Lauren Blakely is $2.99 at select vendors! This is the first book in the Lucky in Love series and has friends to lovers and the super catnippy trope of “seduction lessons.” Blakely writes a lot of romances from the hero’s POV, but this one might have both here.
That time I had the brilliant idea to ask my good friend for lessons in seduction…
Awkward? Maybe. But how else is a good girl going to find out if she likes being naughty? I might be sweet as cherry pie, but I’m also bold and damn curious. And Gabe is charming, trustworthy, aces at seduction (or so I hear) and—bonus!— willing to give me lessons. But to guarantee it won’t ruin our friendship, I have some specific requirements for his instruction. I want these classes to be hypothetical more than hands-on. So what if he’s hella sexy? I can handle that, no problem.

I have it bad for Arden. She’s bright, brilliant, insanely fun, and I want to take her home and spend all night together—and then spend the day with her, too. When she asks for my help, I see my chance to win her sweet heart by showing her how much fun we can have getting spicy. Trouble is, she has a different idea of what “bedroom exploration” should mean. Now I’m going to have to get really clever to win her over.
Good thing I know exactly how to upend her best laid plans.

LIKE WAR: THE WEAPONIZATION OF SOCIAL MEDIA by P. W. Singer is $2.99 at multiple sellers and should be required reading for everyone who uses the internet.
I have read two of today’s books.
The Hollow Kingdom was way out of my comfort zone, but I am glad I did read it.
The audio of The Dream Hunter is indeed amazing, and I was completely lost in the book while listening. To me this was a very psychological romance, with deep insights into the minds of the very flawed main characters. The problematic part as I see it is the depiction of the Arabian culture in the story – the hero is one of those white dudes who are better at everything than the people who actually live in the place he is traveling through. I was able to read it as pure fantasy, but am aware that not everyone has the privilege to look past this.
S.T and Dennis are the dynamic duo every zombie apocalypse has been missing. While I found the ending a little improbable, everything up to those last five pages was fresh, thoughtful and engaging. Every thumb up for Hollow Kingdom.
I listened to The Hollow Kingdom a couple of weeks ago and mostly loved it, especially the first half or so. The cause of the apocalypse had me rolling my eyes–which says a lot considering that I had no problem with suspension of belief for so many other things in the book.
The audiobook was great, and the narrator nailed ST. What an amazing, unique character.
Whiteout by Adriana Anders is $1.99 on Kindle daily deal today. I’m really not a romantic suspense reader but iirc this one was pretty highly reviewed here. I swore I wasn’t buying any new books until making a dent in my list ..but maybe just one more? Any thoughts from someone who’s read it?
There is a spoiler in this comment for Hollow Kingdom, and I attempted a spoiler tag, but it’s the first time I’ve ever tried so I have zero confidence that I did it correctly ☹️ My apologies in advance if I failed.
@DonnaMarie – I agree with you about the ending of Hollow Kingdom. I very much enjoyed the book though, and I’m totally Team ST and Dennis! I wouldn’t usually read a zombie book, but the reviews for Hollow Kingdom made me take a chance and I’m so glad I did. There was one thing that made me very sad, and I didn’t really see the need for it to happen, the death of Dennis . But except for that, it was great
And I did fail on the spoiler tag. My apologies.
Anybody know any billionaire romances where they pay their fair share of taxes? That’s my fetish.
I had “The Dream Hunter” in my Audible Escapes queue but replaced it with another. It has now been added back. It seems intriguing.
“The Dream Hunter” was published in 1994. Read it around 2010 and actually remembered parts. It is Kinsale after all. Just reread it and found it extremely troubling and in places downright awful but infused with bits of brilliance. Won’t get sucked into this one again.
