Juliet Takes a Breath

RECOMMENDED: Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it an A-:
The book is a coming-of-age story in the purest sense. Things happen, but it all comes down to Juliet developing a new sense of confidence, a new way to think about herself and the world around her, and a new sense of who she wants to be
A gutsy, queer coming-of-age story perfect for fans of Nina LaCour, Rainbow Rowell, and Elizabeth Acevedo.
Juliet Milagros Palante is a self-proclaimed closeted Puerto Rican baby dyke from the Bronx.
Only, she’s not so closeted anymore. Not after coming out to her family the night before flying to Portland, Oregon to intern with her favorite feminist writer–what’s sure to be a life changing experience. And when Juliet’s coming out crashes and burns, she’s not sure her mom will ever speak to her again.
But Juliet has a plan–sort of. Her internship with legendary author Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff is sure to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. Except Harlowe’s white. And not from the Bronx. And she definitely doesn’t have all the answers . . .
In a summer bursting with queer brown dance parties, a sexy fling with a motorcycling librarian, and intense explorations of race and identity, Juliet learns what it means to come out–to the world, to her family, to herself.

The Virgin and the Viscount by Charis Michaels is $1.99! This is a second chance romance between a heroine and a hero who rescued her at a young age. Some people thought the hero was a bit of an ass and since many loved the heroine, they desperately wished he was more deserving of her. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Instant Gratification by Jill Shalvis is $1.99 at select vendors! This is book two in the Wilder series, which Sarah really enjoyed. This series takes place in the Sierras at an adventure tourism company, and the setting is as much a character as the people. However, some said the heroine drove them nuts at times.
The Doctor Is In Deep
Wishful, California, is 3000 miles from Dr. Emma Sinclair’s last job in a New York City ER. It may as well be another galaxy. Here, running her father’s clinic for a summer, Emma treats bee stings, stomach flu, and the occasional pet cat. Plus, she has to contend with patients like Stone Wilder: gorgeous, laid-back, and irritating beyond belief. The man laughs at her. A lot. And Emma loathes him. All except that tiny part of her that wants to throw him on her examining table and break every doctor-patient rule in the book. . .
When Stone tries to help Emma learn to loosen up a bit, he pictures white-water rafting or scenic mountain hikes. Not a mind-blowing affair that shakes them both to the core. Emma’s sure she has no place in a town like Wishful, but Stone knows different. Emma belongs here—in this town, in his life. And convincing this strong-minded, stubborn, sexy woman of that fact will be a challenge no Wilder man could resist. . .

Lovely War by Julie Berry is $2.99! This is a mix of young adult, historical fiction, romance, and fantasy. The reviews for this are astoundingly good and I’m so curious, but I’m also wary that it’ll tear my heart into pieces because it sounds real sad.
Read the novel New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network Kate Quinn called “easily one of the best novels I have read all year!” A critically acclaimed, multi-layered romance set in the perilous days of World Wars I and II, where gods hold the fates–and the hearts–of four mortals in their hands.
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect-turned-soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the U.S. Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though War is a formidable force, it’s no match for the transcendent power of Love.
Hailed by critics, Lovely War has received seven starred reviews and is an indie bestseller. Author Julie Berry has been called “a modern master of historical fiction” by Bookpage and “a celestially inspired storyteller” by the New York Times, and Lovely War is truly her masterwork.

I really enjoyed Juliet Takes a Breath! It’s not a romance, although there’s relationship stuff and an understated romance. I think this is Gabby Rivera’s first novel and there were parts that felt more like Inter-sectional Feminism 101 than a novel. But I highly recommend it for YA/NA fans.
The Lovely War was gorgeously written, and it had a really interesting structure. It didn’t shy away from the heavy subject matter of war, racism, and trauma, but as far as I remember (its been a bit since I read it) the characters mostly get happy endings.

One-clicked!
I read _Juliette Takes A Breathe_ and found the “white feminists” so awful that I couldn’t really enjoy the book. I just wanted to yell at them. I love that the book exists but that behavior is so gross and hard to deal with in real life that it just agitated me while I read about it.
Sort of the same way I don’t seem to be able to enjoy books where the woman is being undervalued in respect/salary/etc in her job, usually by her male dominated work culture and feels like a failure as a major plot thread. I just DNF _Would Like to Meet_ for this reason.
That being said, I forgot to mention that _A Spare of White Fire_ is on sale today and I’m exited to read it.
That whole Shalvis series is not her best, but that being said they were still enjoyable. The outdoorsy small town setting was well done, and she writes a good, rugged alpha hero who isn’t also alpha-hole. Shalvis knows how to skirt that line well, but I missed the female friendships she does so well in her other series since this one focuses more on the three brothers.
