His Dark Magic

His Dark Magic by Pat Esden is 99c! I mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and if you were excited about it like I was, you can grab it for less than a buck! Readers thought this was a great start to a new series, while others thought the romance and fantasy balance was a bit skewed.
Its power is legendary. It can fulfill every impossible magical desire. But for one young witch seeking redemption, the Northern Circle coven will challenge her skills—and her heart—beyond measure.
One tragic impulsive mistake made Chloe Winslow an outcast to her influential magic family. As a medical student, she wants to combine science with sorcery to heal those she hurt and right her wrongs. But brilliant, charismatic Devlin Marsh re-routes her plans with a once-in-eternity offer: membership in the exclusive Northern Circle, a mysterious Vermont coven known for pushing the limits.
Enthralled by Devlin and their mesmerizing mutual attraction, Chloe makes a dangerous sacrifice to help the Circle’s high priestess awaken Merlin himself—and learn his timeless cures. But a foreshadowing soon causes Chloe to doubt the Circle’s real motives, as well as Devlin’s . . .
Now Merlin’s demonic shade is loose in the human world, while Chloe and Devlin’s uneasy alliance will pit them against ancient enemies, malevolent illusions, and shattering betrayal. And with the fate of two realms in the balance, Chloe must risk her untried power against a force she can’t defeat—and a passion that could destroy her.

The Hookup by Kristen Ashley is $1.99! This is the first book in her Moonlight and Motor Oil contemporary romance series. Fans of Ashley say this might be one of the best books she’s written. However, others found the heroine too twee and perfect. Have you read this one?
When the new girl in town, Eliza “Izzy” Forrester decides to hit the local drinking hole, she’s not ready to meet the town’s good, solid guy. She’s definitely not prepared to engage in her very first hookup with him.
Then Izzy wakes up the next morning in Johnny Gamble’s bed and good girl Izzy finds she likes being bad for Johnny.
Even so, Izzy feels Johnny holding her at arm’s length. But Johnny makes it clear he wants more and Izzy already knows she wants as much of hot-in-bed, sweet-out-of-it Johnny Gamble.
Floating on air thinking this is going somewhere, Izzy quickly learns why Johnny holds distant.
He’s in love with someone else. Someone who left him and did it leaving him broken. Whoever was up next would be runner up, second best. Knowing the stakes, Izzy will take what she can get from the gentleman that’s Johnny Gamble. And even knowing his heart might never mend, Johnny can’t seem to stay away from Izzy.
Until out of nowhere, his lost love comes back to town. He’s not going back, but Johnny still knows the right thing to do is let Izzy go.
And Izzy knew the stakes, so she makes it easy and slips though his fingers.
But that’s before Johnny realizes Eliza moved to town to escape danger that’s been swirling around her.
And that’s why Johnny decides to wade in.
That and the fact Eliza Forrester makes breakfast with a canary singing on her shoulder and fills out tight dresses in a way Johnny Gamble cannot get out of his head.

RECOMMENDED: Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone is still available for $1.99 at Amazon! Elyse and Sarah jointly review the book today and gave it a B+. They thought it was an empowering book, but felt the ending was a bit rushed. Please be warned that this book deals with all forms of abuse and abuse against a child. I’ve also heard other readers recommend the audiobook.
A double life with a single purpose: revenge.
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.
But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.
Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.
Just as he did to her.

Fearless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99! This is book four in a contemporary western series. There seemed to be some division on the heroine. Some liked her angry and prickly nature, while others thought she did too much self-sabotaging. I’ve heard good things about this series. What about you?
He’d step in front of a bull to save a life
But even he’s no match for a girl this Texas tough
Rodeo bullfighter Wyatt Darrington’s got it all figured out. The perfect car, the perfect job, the perfect looks-the perfect lie. He may be on the fast track to the Hall of Fame, but he knows he’ll always be an outsider to people like Melanie Brookman. Texas-born and bred, with the arena in her blood, Melanie’s come to see Wyatt as her personal enemy, and that suits him just fine-this way, she’ll never realize the truth.
He’s been crazy in love with her for years.
Melanie’s always been a fighter. Fiercely independent and tough as nails, she’s stood up to everything that got in her way-including Wyatt. But now her infamous temper’s got her on the ropes, and there’s nowhere left to run but toward the man she swore she’d never trust…and this time, there’s no denying just how hot he makes her burn.

I like the Kari Lynn Dell books, but they are not fast reads. They are very deliberately-paced, with lots of character development and details about ranch & rodeo work. If you like Pamela Clare (I do), I think you’d like Kari Lynn Dell as their styles are very similar.
That Kristen Ashley description is strangely confusing.
@Lisa: I always read it in a “the poison for Kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco, Kuzco’s poison” voice. Among other things, it makes me think everyone in Johnny Gamble’s world, including Johnny Gamble, refers to Johnny Gamble as Johnny Gamble 100% of the time.
The Kristen Ashley book description is very misleading. Hero is not in love or drawn to ex. Very good short book. Not a novella, just short for the author.
I am a big fan of the Texas Rodeo series. It all feels so realistic. The author lives on a working ranch and it shows. Fearless was the book I liked least, which does not say much, as the others were near to perfection for me. Also some of them are on Audible Escape!
Ooh, I love Pat Esden! Glad to see the third book in that trilogy!
I really enjoyed Jane Doe, but have been dragging my heels about starting book 2 in the series. I’ve noticed that I do this sometimes when I’m afraid of a letdown.
BTW, both the ebooks and audiobooks are part of KU, so subscribers can read and/or listen for free.
Jackie Lau’s Baldwin Village box set is now up for pre-order at Amazon and Kobo (other retailers coming soon). The pre-order/release week price is $3.99 USD (the cost of one novel in the collection) and it will go up to $7.99 in July. I know a lot of readers have raved about Lau’s writing and her excellent handling of mental health in characters, as well as her portrayals of PoC.
Just discovered this, but Fever King, by Victoria Lee is on sale at $1.99 on Amazon. Pretty sure the regular price is at least $7.99, so pretty good deal. YA novel with M/M romance, so I know it’s on a lot of LGBTQIA YA reading lists. Haven’t gotten to that part yet, but so far the writing is good.
Ok, I looked up Victoria Lee and just had to share this from the FAQ section on her website: “Q: are there queer characters in the Feverwake series?
A: Literally every character in The Fever King is queer. All of them. Fight me.”
Jane Doe seems to remain in lockdown w/Amazon… bummer!
@Susan so I recently reread Jane Doe and it was as excellent as it was when I first read it.
I also read Problem Child and it was… not as great. Honestly? I wouldn’t recommend it. It was like…ugh, the premise was essentially ”Jane revisits her childhood” and it’s so unnecessary. I frankly was regularly bored/irritated by the frequent protestations that she never thinks about where she came from immediately followed by visiting where she came from and the people she grew up around. Do we need a review into the circumstances that formed her? Was my understanding of her complexities enhanced? Not so much.
Maybe I just miss the flirtation with homicidal misandry…
I loved Jane Doe, it was so deliciously evil and cunning. Haven’t read the next in that series but did read the one-offs: Evelyn, After and Half Past. Looking at her Amazon listing brings the realization that a few have been missed.
