A Scandalous Deal

A Scandalous Deal by Joanna Shupe is $3.99 at select vendors! This is an American historical romance with workplace elements. This is the second book in The Four Hundred series and the next one, A Notorious Vow, is a major favorite and comfort read for me. Are you a fan of the series?
Joanna Shupe returns with another unforgettable novel set in the glittering world of New York City’s Gilded Age…
They call her Lady Unlucky…
With three dead fiancés, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva’s misfortune strikes once more when she discovers the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer.
Or is it Lady Irresistible?
Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable—and more alluring—than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her.
When a series of onsite “accidents” makes it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he’s willing to do anything to protect her—even if it requires A SCANDALOUS DEAL.

A Breath of Scandal by Elizabeth Essex is $2.99! I mainly included this one because I just love the cover. Normally, we see a heroine who is clearly not interesting in embracing the hero, but this one is so tender! Also, be warned this was first released in 2012 and got a re-release this year. Check to make sure you haven’t read it!
Shockingly brash and scandalously independent, the Reckless Brides are boldly rewriting the rules of love and marriage—one smitten bachelor at a time…
THE LADY IS A KNOCKOUT
Forced by her family into an engagement with a man she can never abide, Antigone Preston knows only a scandal will save her from a loveless marriage. But knocking a man down to the ballroom floor with her fists brings dangerous consequences. She may have ruined her reputation, but now she’s endangered her heart…THE OFFICER IS A GENTLEMAN
The son of an earl and a career navy man, Captain William Jellicoe has no interest in the frivolities of London—and even less in the institution of marriage. But there’s something steering him toward Antigone. He has never met anyone as brazen and unconventional as…himself. But will he risk it all for a woman who still has the breath of scandal hot on her lips?Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

The Hellion by Christi Caldwell is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first book in the Wicked Wallflowers series. Elyse read the third book in this series and noted the books definitely have to be read in order, so pick this one up if you’re looking to start!
USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell’s Wicked Wallflowers series burns hot as two rivals meet in the flesh and feel the heat…
Adair Thorne has just watched his gaming-hell dream disappear into a blaze of fire and ash, and he’s certain that his competitors, the Killorans, are behind it. His fury and passion burn even hotter when he meets Cleopatra Killoran, a tart-mouthed vixen who mocks him at every turn. If she were anyone else but the enemy, she’d ignite a desire in him that would be impossible to control.
No one can make Cleopatra do anything. That said, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her siblings―even if that means being sponsored by their rivals for a season in order to land a noble husband. But she will not allow her head to be turned by the infuriating and darkly handsome Adair Thorne.
There’s only one thing that threatens the rules of the game: Cleopatra’s secret. It could unravel the families’ tenuous truce and shatter the unpredictably sinful romance mounting between the hellion…and a scoundrel who could pass for the devil himself.

Wagon Train Cinderella by Shirley Kennedy is $2.99! This is an American historical romance and a Cinderella retelling set during a wagon train to California. Many readers loved the unconventional setting, but found the author did more telling than showing during the story. Is this anyone’s catnip?
Love can lead you out of the wilderness…
1851, Overland Trail to California. As a baby, Callie was left on the doorstep of an isolated farmhouse in Tennessee. The Whitaker family took her in, but have always considered her more a servant than a daughter. Scorned by her two stepsisters, Callie is forced to work long hours and denied an education. But a new world opens to her when the Whitakers join a wagon train to California—guided by rugged Luke McGraw…
A loner, haunted by a painful past, Luke plans to return to the wilderness once his work is done. But he can’t help noticing how poorly Callie is treated—or how unaware she is of her beauty and intelligence. As the two become closer over the long trek west, Callie’s confidence grows. And when disaster strikes, Callie emerges as the strong one—and the woman Luke may find the courage to love at last…

I read A Breath of Scandal by Elizabeth Essex some years ago. I don’t recall the details (poor memory), but I do recall liking it.
Kennedy’s novels are um…well, they speak approvingly of manifest destiny and have a lot of stereotypes, or the ones that I’ve read did.
I read A Scandalous Deal this past week and really enjoyed it. As an Architect, there aren’t a lot of books where the heroine is the Architect so I decided to read it, although it is workplace romance/client is the love interest. She gets name referenced in other later books by Joanna Shupe. I’d also heard on the Fated Mates podcast about it being a serious grovel/resolution to the conflict, which it definitely was. And I was torn about the strike breaking since I’m not in favor of the practice, but the way Shupe used it/why the strike was happening worked in the story.
I read some of the Elizabeth Essex novels in that series years ago and enjoyed them, I reread parts of the first one from time to time, not sure I read the second one. I do like the new covers.
Shuri Vol. 1: The Search For Black Panther (Shuri (2018-2019)) by Nnedi Okorafor is FREE at Amazon US today. Couldn’t believe my eyes. This volume contains Shuri #1-5.
The Essex cover is so beautiful and yes there is a tenderness to it that isn’t usually featured on romance novels. I don’t care if every page is covered in “blah blah blabbity blah blah” I’m buying this book and giving it five stars 🙂
@Laura
I have several books I’ve put on my wish list purely for the covers, and this is one of them. And they are fully clothed!
I enjoyed the Shupe book with the woman architect. Rhiannon just reminded me about the strike-breaking incident but there were extenuating circumstances, so I was fine with it. And I loved the whole Essex series that “A Breath of Scandal” is part of. As the blurb indicates, the heroine coldcocks someone who tries to feel her up on the dance floor, the hero sees it and is smitten.
