  • The Calculating Stars

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

RECOMMENDED: The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal is $2.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a B grade:

Even though at first I found this book to be slow going, I came to appreciate it for its intersectional feminism and its unabashed adoration of all the science and math that goes into making space flight possible.

A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part.

One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. And yet, Elma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions may not stand a chance.

  • The Vine Witch

The Vine Witch by Luanne Smith

The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith is $1.99 at Amazon! This is also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. I’m obsessed with the moody florals of this cover. I saw one review that was disappointed the description didn’t overtly mention this was a romance novel. GOD FORBID.

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

  • Kill the Farm Boy

Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah Dawson

Kill the Farm Boy by Kevin Hearne and Delilah S. Dawson is $1.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal! Readers say that this is a light-hearted, slightly goofy book a la Terry Pratchett, but some found it tried too hard in its silliness. There are currently three books out in the series and I wonder if this is a series that finds its footing as it progresses.

In an irreverent new series in the tradition of Terry Pratchett novels and The Princess Bride, the New York Times bestselling authors of the Iron Druid Chronicles and Star Wars: Phasmareinvent fantasy, fairy tales, and floridly written feast scenes.

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, a hero, the Chosen One, was born . . . and so begins every fairy tale ever told.

This is not that fairy tale.

There is a Chosen One, but he is unlike any One who has ever been Chosened.

And there is a faraway kingdom, but you have never been to a magical world quite like the land of Pell.

There, a plucky farm boy will find more than he’s bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there’s the Dark Lord who wishes for the boy’s untimely death . . . and also very fine cheese. Then there’s a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, the Dread Necromancer Steve, and a strange and wondrous journey to the most peculiar “happily ever after” that ever once-upon-a-timed.

  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

RECOMMENDED: A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is $3.99! This one was recommended to Carrie and she really enjoyed it, giving the book an A-:

I enjoyed the way this book both used and subverted Beauty and the Beast tropes. There’s a good blend of angst and humor and worldbuilding.

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

  1. Lora says:

Oh I am sorry to say this but the vine witch was not good. Unless you want your magical romance littered with exsanguinated cats. For reals. The premise was so good and the book was so disappointing. I wanted a badass back to nature heroine schooling rigid science boy and instead…animal corpses.

  2. Penny says:

@Lora WOW thank you for the heads up! I had this on my TBR but, uh, not anymore….

  3. Kit says:

Have to disagree here, I actually liked The Vine Witch! Ok so the heroine isn’t badass but having spent seven years as a toad it would take anyone a little while to get their spark back, although I preferred Yvette as a character better. Thought the romance was more of a sideplot though to be honest.

Have the sequel ready on KU. Not expecting much as a lot of paranormal sequels I find disappointing.

  4. Mae says:

If you’re doing the Tor book club, The Calculating Stars is free till 6/27.

  5. Jay says:

FYI if you like Tor books, when you sign up for their ebook club they send you opportunities for free and discounted books. They just offered The Calculating Stars for free a few days ago. I think a past offering was a Martha Wells book but my memory is trash and I couldn’t find old emails, so yeah.

  6. Lostshadows says:

Just a heads up on The Calculating Stars, it’s currently Tor.com’s ebook club giveaway and is free through the end of tomorrow from their site. (You do have to sign up.)

  7. Ms. M says:

@Jay, actually, Tor gave away all 4 Murderbot novellas in a previous month. It’s a pretty great club!

  8. Tam says:

I really liked The Vine Witch. My main complaint was that the hero was a bit disappointing; I was a lot more interested in the two main female characters.

  9. Kareni says:

One of my favorite new adult romances, Sarina Bowen’s The Year We Fell Down is currently free for Kindle readers.

  10. Alex says:

I agree with Tam, I enjoyed the Vine Witch but I didn’t like the hero much at all. I really didn’t buy the romance at all and even though I’m a die hard romance reader I think that this book would have been better without it.

  11. Terrierhead says:

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust is $2.99 at Amazon. Not sure if it is being price matched. The book is described as a retelling of Snow White where the step mother and step daughter both are strong characters. I love a fairy tale retelling and one-clicked. https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Made-Glass-Melissa-Bashardoust-ebook/dp/B01N1U27PI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=girls+made+of+snow+and+glass+by+melissa+bashardoust&qid=1593167520&s=digital-text&sprefix=girls+made+of+snow+and+&sr=1-1

  12. Heather M says:

I expected to like The Calculating Stars because I love Mary Robinette Kowal already, but I was suprised by how MUCH I loved it. I’m pretty sure I tore through it in either one or two sittings. It just hit all my buttons just right. I was never really into old school scifi, but having women centered suddenly made those tropes work for me.

And while it’s not a romance, I really appreciated having a loving, stable couple at the center of the story who yes, have their issues, but then do things like *maturely talk to each other about those issues*. It was very refreshing.

  13. Susanna says:

I really, really enjoyed both The Calculating Stars and its first sequel, The Fated Sky.

  14. Emily says:

I liked the Calculating Stars but I LOVED the sequel. It’s as close as to The Martian as I’ve been able to find for sci-fi but with a lot of the same themes as the first.
