  • A Princess in Theory

A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! This is the first book in her Reluctant Royals series and this seems to be a series that just keeps getting better with its books. Many readers loved how Alyssa writes consent, agency, and all sorts of other awesome and empowering things. However, some warn that this book takes several chapters to get into the swing of things.

From acclaimed author Alyssa Cole comes the tale of a city Cinderella and her Prince Charming in disguise . . .

Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn’t have time for fairy tales…or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she’s betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she’s learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won’t convince her otherwise.

Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can’t resist the chance to experience life—and love—without the burden of his crown.

The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after?

  • Red Sister

    Red Sister by Mark Lawrence

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence is $2.99! This is the first book in an epic fantasy series and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This book came onto my radar after Poppy’s Magical Institution post because Teev left an amazing comment for this:

Here are the first two lines of the book. They hooked me and I really enjoyed the ride. “It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size. For Sister Thorn of the Sweet Mercy Convent Lano Tacsis brought two hundred men.”

The international bestselling author of the Broken Empire and the Red Queen’s War trilogies begins a stunning epic fantasy series about a secretive order of holy warriors…

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy, young girls are raised to be killers. In some few children the old bloods show, gifting rare talents that can be honed to deadly or mystic effect. But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls.

A bloodstained child of nine falsely accused of murder, guilty of worse, Nona is stolen from the shadow of the noose. It takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist, but under Abbess Glass’s care there is much more to learn than the arts of death. Among her class Nona finds a new family—and new enemies.

Despite the security and isolation of the convent, Nona’s secret and violent past finds her out, drawing with it the tangled politics of a crumbling empire. Her arrival sparks old feuds to life, igniting vicious struggles within the church and even drawing the eye of the emperor himself.

Beneath a dying sun, Nona Grey must master her inner demons, then loose them on those who stand in her way.

  • The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is $2.99! This scifi novel has been recommended and loved by many of my friends, and talked about highly in my book group. The book has some great queer representation, though readers remarked it’s more character driven than plot driven.

A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heart

When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn’t expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past.

And nothing could be further from what she’s known than the crew of the Wayfarer.

From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they’ll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn’t part of the job description.

The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure, and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe… as long as you actually like them.

  • A Quick Bite

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands is $2.99! This is the first book in the long running Argeneau paranormal romance series. Some say this book hasn’t aged well, while others love this series for the blend of humor and romance. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads. Any fans of the series here?

That hot guy tied to Lissianna Argeneau’s bed? He’s not dessert – he’s the main course!

Lissianna has been spending her centuries pining for Mr. Right, not just a quick snack, and this sexy guy she finds in her bed looks like he might be a candidate. But there’s another, more pressing issue: her tendency to faint at the sight of blood…an especially annoying quirk for a vampire. Of course it doesn’t hurt that this man has a delicious-looking neck. What kind of cold-blooded vampire woman could resist a bite of that?

Dr. Gregory Hewitt recovers from the shock of waking up in a stranger’s bedroom pretty quickly – once he sees a gorgeous woman about to treat him to a wild night of passion. But is it possible for the good doctor to find true love with a vampire vixen, or will he be just a good meal? That’s a question Dr. Greg might be willing to sink his

Couldn’t really get on with the Argeneau series and I really wanted to. Would be interested to see how well it has aged.

@Geralynn Ross: Sorry, typo on my part!

  4. JoJo says:

LOVED A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet! And the next in the series too!! The characters were complex and varied and the flow kept me 100% engaged to the very end and then I bought the next book – to find that it was a different setting of group of characters altogether. I thought I would be disappointed but nope- loved it too!!

  5. Julia aka mizzelle says:

Nalini Singh’s Slave to Sensation is 2.99 at the moment. I think “When in Romance” picked it for their next book club/discussion.

  6. Ulrike says:

I gave A Princess in Theory & A Duke By Default 4 stars and enjoyed them both enough to put Alyssa Cole on my list of authors to watch.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet keeps catching my eye, but I haven’t yet read it.

  7. Egged says:

Strongly recommend Red Sister and Long Way To A Small Angry Planet. Devoured each book in a matter of days, then immediately picked up their sequels.

Each book in the series by Becky Chambers is definitely character driven, nor plot driven. There’s something about her writing that reminds me a bit of Ursula K. LeGuin, in terms of the really clear pictures she draws of different cultures, almost anthropological if that makes sense?

  8. Lisa F says:

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet sounds like my kind of catnip!
