  • Polaris Rising

    Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik

RECOMMENDED: Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik is $2.99! This is a sci-fi romance that released last year and I absolutely loved it. You can read my A- here:

I am so incredibly happy that this book is in the world, especially after feeling like I’ve exhausted all my sci-fi romance options. Polaris Rising is exciting. It’s funny. It’s fan-fucking-tastic. My quibbles are minor in comparison to the joyful Good Book Noises I made while reading this.

As the seventh of nine children, Ada von Hasenberg knows that her only value to House von Hasenberg is as a political pawn in an arranged marriage. But after watching two of her older sisters get auctioned off to horrible men, Ada refuses to play her part. She flees off-planet and disappears for two years.

Ada’s father, fed up with her rebellion, offers a bounty for her safe return. The universe is a big place, but mercs are everywhere, and Ada is caught. With the merc ship full, she’s forced to share a cell with Marcus Loch, the Devil of Fornax Zero. Rumor has it he murdered every commanding officer who issued orders during the Fornax Rebellion. All anyone knows for sure is that the Royal Consortium wants his head.

Ada has no trouble believing the muscled man chained in the back of her cell is a killer. But when their ship is attacked by forces from rival House Rockhurst, Ada must decide whether to trust him—because once you release the devil, you can’t put him back. And when the attack heralds the opening salvo of a much bigger war, Ada must determine where her loyalties truly lie.

  • The Wolf of Oren-Yaro

The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso

The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso is $1.99! Ellen wrote a great review of this one, giving it a B-:

The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso presents a strong entry in the annals of badass fantasy heroines in the form of Queen Talyien of Jin-Sayeng.

A queen of a divided land must unite her people, even if they hate her, even if it means stopping a ruin that she helped create. A debut epic fantasy from an exciting new voice.

“I murdered a man and made my husband leave the night before they crowned me.”

Born under the crumbling towers of Oren-yaro, Queen Talyien was the shining jewel and legacy of the bloody War of the Wolves that nearly tore her nation apart. Her upcoming marriage to the son of her father’s rival heralds peaceful days to come.

But his sudden departure before their reign begins fractures the kingdom beyond repair.

Years later, Talyien receives a message, urging her to attend a meeting across the sea. It’s meant to be an effort at reconciliation, but an assassination attempt leaves the queen stranded and desperate to survive in a dangerous land. With no idea who she can trust, she’s on her own as she struggles to fight her way home.

  • The Zig Zag Girl

The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths

The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths is $2.99! This is book one in the Magic Men Mysteries series. It’s a post-WWII historical mystery with magicians. Readers found the book to be fun, but mentioned it wasn’t as engaging as Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series.

    Brighton, 1950.

When the body of a girl is found, cut into three, Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is reminded of a magic trick, the Zig Zag Girl.

The inventor of the trick, Max Mephisto, is an old friend of Edgar’s. They served together in the war as part of a shadowy unit called the Magic Men.

Max is still on the circuit, touring seaside towns in the company of ventriloquists, sword-swallowers and dancing girls. Changing times mean that variety is not what it once was, yet Max is reluctant to leave this world to help Edgar investigate. But when the dead girl turns out to be known to him, Max changes his mind.

Another death, another magic trick: Edgar and Max become convinced that the answer to the murders lies in their army days. When Edgar receives a letter warning of another ‘trick’, the Wolf Trap, he knows that they are all in danger…

  1. Sandra says:

I already have three of the four, so got off cheap. I’ve gotten into post-WWII mysteries lately, so snagged the ZigZag Girl.

Run, do not walk, to get the Andrews. The sequel drops in August. And they are currently running a serial featuring Julie from the Kate Daniels series on their blog, if you need a KD fix.

Also, the final book in the Mihalik series comes out next week. It’s already pre-ordered.

  2. Tam says:

My main complaint about Sapphire Flames is that I just wished it would slow down the action-action-action and let the characters breathe occasionally. That family is at its best when they’re chatting to each other in between things dramatically blowing up, and I’d have loved more interaction between the hero and heroine. (Nitpicky, I know!)

  3. Marci says:

The first book in Elizabeth Peters’s Amelia Peabody series CROCODILE ON THE SANDBANK is one of today’s Kindle Daily Deals for $1.99. And you can add the Audible Audiobook for $3.49. The Audible audiobook is the version narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. This is one of my favorite series and Barbara Rosenblat is fabulous as the narrator.

  4. Lisa F says:

I LOVE the Magic Man series; and obviously IA always knocks it out of the park.

  5. Jacqueline says:

@Marci timely af! Thank you! I remember devouring this series, and just restarted it via audiobook. I borrowed from the library, and while there’s technically nothing wrong with the narration, I don’t hear the big and brash Amelia that I love. Off to try the Rosenblat!

  6. SusanH says:

A Spy in the House, the first Agency book by YS Lee, is currently free on Kindle. It’s been years since I read it, but I remember it being fairly entertaining. It’s a YA mystery set in Victorian London about a young girl trained to be a spy.

  7. Ellie says:

@Susan H – a Spy In The House was good but there was one scene that I was so disturbed by that I had trouble finishing the book. I did, but I have studiously avoided any sequel. The scene wasn’t violent or rapey but I pretty much noped tf on out.

  8. SusanH says:

@Ellie – I don’t remember the book that well. Do you mind giving spoilers? I just told my 11 year old she might like it.
