Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage
RECOMMENDED: Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley is $1.99! This is the second book in the Mackenzies series, and I love these books with my whole heart. I think this one would be fine as a standalone and I even made an angel food cake in honor of it.
Only one man could match a lady like this—scandal for scandal.
Six years ago, eighteen-year-old Lady Isabella Scranton scandalized all of London by eloping the night of her come-out ball with the notorious rake, Lord Mac Mackenzie. After three turbulent years of marriage, she scandalized London once again—this time by leaving him.
Now Mac has resurfaced, every bit as charismatic, and with one goal: to seduce Isabella back into his life and his bed even if it means acting like a real gentleman. But when Isabella rises to the challenge of posing nude for Mac’s erotic paintings, her pent-up hunger for the decadent rake is exposed as well, and she finds herself unable to resist the smooth strokes of an artist at work.
But someone’s been watching them—dangerously close. This ingenious forger with designs on Mac’s paintings also sets his sights on Isabella herself. Deciding to become Isabella’s protector, Mac vows to never leave her side, whether his independent and proud lady likes it or not.

Tess of the Road
RECOMMENDED: Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it an A-. I definitely agree with her assessment and warn that it’s way more harrowing and somewhat depressing that I had expected.
Readers should know that this book is a feminist, sex-positive, affirming exploration of grief and the need for physical and emotional freedom. However, readers should also know that it’s 544 pages of exploration of grief and trauma.
Meet Tess, a brave new heroine from beloved epic fantasy author Rachel Hartman.
In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons get to be whomever they want. Tess, stubbornly, is a troublemaker. You can’t make a scene at your sister’s wedding and break a relative’s nose with one punch (no matter how pompous he is) and not suffer the consequences. As her family plans to send her to a nunnery, Tess yanks on her boots and sets out on a journey across the Southlands, alone and pretending to be a boy.
Where Tess is headed is a mystery, even to her. So when she runs into an old friend, it’s a stroke of luck. This friend is a quigutl–a subspecies of dragon–who gives her both a purpose and protection on the road. But Tess is guarding a troubling secret. Her tumultuous past is a heavy burden to carry, and the memories she’s tried to forget threaten to expose her to the world in more ways than one.
Returning to the fascinating world she created in the award-winning and New York Times bestselling Seraphina, Rachel Hartman introduces readers to a new character and a new quest, pushing the boundaries of genre once again in this wholly original fantasy.

Dead Until Dark
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris is 99c! This is book 1 in the Sookie Stackhouse series, which went on to become True Blood on HBO. I remember reading this book and being sucked in (no pun intended) (oh, who am I kidding, pun TOTALLY intended) immediately. If you’ve been curious, this is a great opportunity. Also, I was definitely team Eric Northman.
Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She’s quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn’t get out much. Not because she’s not pretty. She is. It’s just that, well, Sookie has this sort of “disability.” She can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He’s tall, dark, handsome–and Sookie can’t hear a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting for all her life….
But Bill has a disability of his own: He’s a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of–big surprise–murder. And when one of Sookie’s coworkers is killed, she fears she’s next….

Soulless
Soulless by Gail Carriger is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the first book by the Parasol Protectorate series and for many readers, this book ignited their love for Carriger’s writing. I loved the first book, especially the heroine, but I agree with other reviewers in that there’s a lot of different things going on that conflict with one another.
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire—and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

Huh. I had TESS OF THE ROAD on my wish list but missed the price drop when I scrolled through this morning. *clickity*
WAR GIRLS by Tochi Onyebuchi is $2.99 at multiple sellers. I thought this was one of the most striking covers of last year with the combination of the pretty pastels and the MECH ARM.
The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unlivable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky.
In a war-torn Nigeria, battles are fought using flying, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation, as the years-long civil war wages on, survival becomes the only way of life.
Two sisters, Onyii and Ify, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still, they dream of peace, of hope, of a future together.
And they’re willing to fight an entire war to get there.
Last month I did a reread of everything Gail Carriger has ever written…and honestly I think Soulless may remain as my favorite of all her books. I like them all but Soulless is great.
Also, yes, Team Eric all the way
Super important alert: Alisha Rai’s Girl Gone Viral, obtained for $3.99 on kindle. Happy day!
@Deet – Thank you!
@SBAmanda and MGW, stopping in to sniff superiorly. Never on Team Eric, and the only time I wasn’t on the winning team was a brief alliance with team Quinn. Because, WERETIGER. Sometimes you just have to admit your weaknesses.
I don’t want to sound bitter or anything, but I am having FEELINGS about a book I paid $11 for being $4 a month later. I like preordering books, and don’t have a huge problem paying higher prices when I know the library waiting list will be months long and it’s not likely to go on sale any time soon. I felt the same way when Love Lettering by Kate Claybourne went on sale (from $10 to $3) after 2.5 months. I want to support my favorite authors, but balancing that with my desire/need to stay within my budget, it’s hard to preorder an ebook that I can’t share with anyone for $10+ when there’s a good chance it will be less than half the price within a couple months.
I don’t know where I’m going with this, I think just venting my frustration. Publishing is moving in weird ways,
If I get to take my beach vacation in Mexico in a couple of months I’m taking Sookie Stackhouse with me. I’ve had the boxed set for three years and haven’t read them yet. (go Team Eric LOL) The Ashley novel sounds like a sexy read? Is it all bark and no bite or does it have some NC 17 bite to it? Not asking for a friend.
I made it to book four or five in Sookie Stackhouse and lost interest after reading spoilers. I find it pays to be behind when reading series so you can get a heads up.
Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen is free right now, seems to be all platforms. Newsletter said it would be for a few days.
I am also Team Eric, which was why I liked the book where he had amnesia the best (I think book 4?). Lost interest in the series well before I got to the end though. Same thing happened with the show.
Jennifer Ashley’s Mackenzie books always have wide open bedroom doors. Nothing particularly kinky, but definitely not all bark, no bite. I don’t remember anything in particular about the sex scenes in this one, but I do recall that I really enjoyed the book, AND if I’m not mistaken, wasn’t Mac a ginger?
I liked the Jennifer Ashley. It’s a bit of a spoiler, but it needs a content warning for pregnancy loss.
@Michelle @JenM thanks for the tips about the Ashley book AND thank you for content warning; pregnancy loss isn’t a trigger for me but other things can be (sexual assault). If you all are in North America I hope you had a great weekend!
@MaryK @Katie-Eric…mmmmm Eric….I also lost interest in the series before it ended (they not only jumped the shark but they jumped the whole ocean with that ending LOL)
Gail Carriger is one of my comfort reads—she doesn’t kill off characters and she really centers (female) friendship and found family.
KJ Charles’ THE MAGPIE LORD is free on Kindle and Kobo as of this writing (haven’t checked other formats yet)…
