  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $2.99 at Amazon! This could expire ASAP. Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  • Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson is $1.99! We’ve reviewed another one of Lawson’s books on the site and her writing comes highly recommended. Lawson has a knack for addressing tough subjects with an approachable, humorous voice. Are you a fan of Lawson’s blog? Have you read any of her books?

When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.

In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives.

  • Wake of Vultures

Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen

RECOMMENDEDWake of Vultures by Lila Bowen is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched! Carrie really liked this book and gave it an A-:

This book succeeds because Nettie is such a compelling character. Nettie is incredibly vibrant, prickly, compelling, flawed, exciting, and interesting. She’s compelling because all her experiences and aspects of her personality and her sharp mind come together to create a complex person who you just have to root for.

A rich, dark fantasy of destiny, death, and the supernatural world hiding beneath the surface.

Nettie Lonesome lives in a land of hard people and hard ground dusted with sand. She’s a half-breed who dresses like a boy, raised by folks who don’t call her a slave but use her like one. She knows of nothing else. That is, until the day a stranger attacks her. When nothing, not even a sickle to the eye can stop him, Nettie stabs him through the heart with a chunk of wood, and he turns into black sand.

And just like that, Nettie can see.

But her newfound sight is a blessing and a curse. Even if she doesn’t understand what’s under her own skin, she can sense what everyone else is hiding — at least physically. The world is full of evil, and now she knows the source of all the sand in the desert. Haunted by the spirits, Nettie has no choice but to set out on a quest that might lead to her true kin… if the monsters along the way don’t kill her first.

  • First Time in Forever

First Time in Forever by Sarah Morgan

First Time in Forever by Sarah Morgan is $2.99! This is the first book in the Puffin Island series. Fans of Morgan’s romance say this one lacks some oomph, but is still a lovely and sweet ride to an HEA. It has a 4-star average on Goodreads.

Windswept, isolated and ruggedly beautiful, Puffin Island is a haven for day-trippers and daydreamers alike. But this charming community has a way of bringing people together in the most unexpected ways…

It’s been a summer of firsts for Emily Donovan. From becoming a stand-in mom to her niece, Lizzy, to arriving on Puffin Island, her life has become virtually unrecognizable. Between desperately safeguarding Lizzy and her overwhelming fear of the ocean—which surrounds her everywhere she goes!—Emily has lost count of the number of “just breathe” pep talks she’s given herself. And that’s before charismatic local yacht club owner Ryan Cooper kisses her…

Ryan knows all about secrets. And it’s clear that newcomer Emily—with her haunted eyes and the little girl she won’t let out of her sight—is hiding from something besides the crazy chemistry between them. So Ryan decides he’s going to make it his personal mission to help her unwind and enjoy the sparks! But can Puffin Island work its magic on Emily and get her to take the biggest leap of trust of all—putting her heart in someone else’s hands?

  1. Ren Benton says:

HEART OF FIRE by Bec McMaster is free. Icelandic farmer goes to get her ram back from a thieving dragon. Shenanigans ensue. There’s a dude in the village who is 100% Gaston. The last chapter did some standard PNR things that were disappointing to me, given how much I had liked it up to that point, but that’s probably a bonus for everybody else.

  2. Maite says:

Reading a books on sale post: a rollercoaster.
Opening the post: “Remember, I don’t HAVE to buy everything. Remember credit card bill yesterday.”
Reading post: “Alyssa Cole? Ok, one won’t hurt. But it’s just THIS one. JENNY LAWSON! I need to shared this with my former book club! And Lawson is a different category than Cole, so I totally can justify two. And, oh God, I do want to read the Vulture one. Such an awesome cover, and Carrie has very similar tastes… SARAH MORGAN! The last consistently good series too.

Hmmm, there’s no way geo-restrictions are not gonna mess this up for me.
Yup, unavailable where I live, or discount not present.
    ….
I t’s May 2nd and the e-book fund hasn’t been touched! … Oh right, bought Love Lettering yesterday. Whatever, let’s go read.”

I swear geo-restrictions are the only reason I have money.

  3. Darlynne says:

WAKE OF VULTURES was both excellent and very dark. Nettie prevails, which is not a spoiler, but there is a lot for her and us (all the trigger warnings) to overcome. See Carrie’s insightful review for her perspective. I hope to catch the next books in the series soon.

  4. I_Simon says:

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James is on sale at amazon today for 1.99. It’s an excellent spooky and feminist mystery that goes back and forth between the past and the present and it was one of my favorite reads in 2018.
