Mary Balogh, Contemporary Romance, & More

  • Some Girls Bite

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill is $2.99! Urban fantasy with some hints of romance, Some Girls Bite is the first book in the Chicagoland Vampire series. The cover had a pretty big facelift, by the way, and I think it’s actually an improvement. Some found the books elements a little silly (i.e. continuous Buffy references), while others really enjoyed them. Have you read this one?

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student’s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Lord o the Manor Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war and there will be blood.

  • Someone to Wed

Someone to Wed by Mary Balogh

RECOMMENDED: Someone to Wed by Mary Balogh is $1.99! To say Elyse loved this book is an understatement. She gave it an A:

It was emotionally rich, with a deeply engaging, slow-building romance centered around a conflict that didn’t ruin me. There’s sadness there, but not darkness.

If you love slow-burn romance or just a really beautifully written Regency, pick up Someone to Wed. You won’t be disappointed.

A very practical marriage makes Alexander Westcott question his heart in the latest Regency romance from the New York Timesbestselling author of Someone to Hold.

When Alexander Westcott becomes the new Earl of Riverdale, he inherits a title he never wanted and a failing country estate he can’t afford. But he fully intends to do everything in his power to undo years of neglect and give the people who depend on him a better life. . . .

A recluse for more than twenty years, Wren Heyden wants one thing out of life: marriage. With her vast fortune, she sets her sights on buying a husband. But when she makes the desperate—and oh-so-dashing—earl a startlingly unexpected proposal, Alex will only agree to a proper courtship, hoping for at least friendship and respect to develop between them. He is totally unprepared for the desire that overwhelms him when Wren finally lifts the veils that hide the secrets of her past. . . .

  • Wall Street Titan

Wall Street Titan by Anna Zaires

Wall Street Titan by Anna Zaires is 99c at Amazon! This was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick for me and I preordered it. Have I read it yet? Nope. It appears to be a duet for both characters to get their HEA. Not sure if the first one has any sort of cliffhanger before continuing.

    A billionaire who wants a perfect wife…

At thirty-five, Marcus Carelli has it all: wealth, power, and the kind of looks that leave women breathless. A self-made billionaire, he heads one of the largest hedge funds on Wall Street and can take down major corporations with a single word. The only thing he’s missing? A wife who’d be as big of an achievement as the billions in his bank account.

    A cat lady who needs a date…

Twenty-six-year-old bookstore clerk Emma Walsh has it on good authority that she’s a cat lady. She doesn’t necessarily agree with that assessment, but it’s hard to argue with the facts. Raggedy clothes covered with cat hair? Check. Last professional haircut? Over a year ago. Oh, and three cats in a tiny Brooklyn studio? Yep, she’s got those.

And yes, fine, she hasn’t had a date since… well, she can’t recall. But that part is fixable. Isn’t that what the dating sites are for?

    A case of mistaken identity…

One high-end matchmaker, one dating app, one mix-up that changes everything… Opposites may attract, but can this last?

  • Contagion

    Contagion by Erin Bowman

Contagion by Erin Bowman is $1.99! This is the first book in a YA sci-fi/horror series. Elyse gave this one a B grade and warned of a cliffhanger:

So if creepy space shit is your cup of tea, then I’d recommend Contagion. It offers a twist on a genre that’s seen a lot of mileage, and I’m excited for the next installment.

    IT GOT IN US

After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

    MOST ARE DEAD

But when the crew arrives, they find an abandoned site, littered with rotten food, discarded weapons…and dead bodies.

    DON’T SET FOOT HERE AGAIN

As they try to piece together who—or what—could have decimated an entire operation, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

“A Gentleman Never Keeps Score” by Cat Sebastian is $1.99 right now.

  2. Laurel says:

I highly recommend Someone to Wed. Mary Balogh is dependably a good read, and this is one of her best. Loved it.

  3. Carla says:

Someone to Wed was my first Mary Balogh (I gave her a try due to Elyse’s “A” rating) and I was not disappointed. Balogh has now become one of my very favorite authors. I love the rich inner life of her characters and the wonderful dialogues.

  4. MGW says:

I enjoyed Contagion but felt the sequel wasn’t as good as the first one!

  5. Laura says:

Someone To Wed made me weep buckets. Balough has gentle way of creating poignant stories without being overly precious or twee. If you like a lot of erotic sex, she isn’t your first choice but her stories make up for the PG-13 sex.

  6. Dottiebears says:

I loved Someone to Wed, but there have been very few Balough books that I haven’t loved. She is not always explicit and doesn’t always have a lot of drama but I always get invested in her characters. The “slow burn” description applies to many of her books and I think that is one thing that makes her books so appealing to me.

  7. wingednike says:

I’ve been borrowing the Chicagoland series on audio and they’ve been helping me deal with my commute since last year. Merit took a while to grow on me (about 3/4 through the first book). I can’t binge them because the politics tend to infuriate me. There’s not enough (or immediate) comeuppance for terrible characters.

  8. Jesara says:

I preferred Kari Wallace “Salvation Day” to Contagion – also zombies in space but with a more diverse set of protagonists and a lot less “because the plot said so” choices.
A spaceship has been abandoned in space because of a virus. There was only one survivor – a child at the time. The protagonist and her crew need to kidnap him to get back on the ship and get it ready to be taken over by rebels – and of course they’ll take all needed precautions to avoid a virus . . .
