  • Fortune’s Pawn

    Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach

Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach is $2.99! Catch this one as part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is a scifi novel with some strong romantic elements and, in the past, I’ve heard it described as Kate Daniels in space. Many people loved this book and its worldbuilding, though there are a few reviewers who said they never connected with any of the characters.

Devi Morris isn’t your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It’s a combination that’s going to get her killed one day – but not just yet.

That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn’t misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she’s found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn’t give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.

If Sigouney Weaver in Alien met Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, you’d get Deviana Morris — a hot new mercenary earning her stripes to join an elite fighting force. Until one alien bite throws her whole future into jeopardy.

  • A Hundred Summers

A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams

A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams is $2.99! Williams often writes historical fiction with romantic elements and this one is set in Rhode Island. There was a review I read that described Williams’ books as “schmaltzy” and that you really have to lean into it. I completely agree and sometimes, we need some schmaltz.

As the 1938 hurricane approaches Rhode Island, another storm brews in this New York Times bestselling beach read from the author of The Summer Wives and The Golden Hour.

Lily Dane has returned to Seaview, Rhode Island, where her family has summered for generations. It’s an escape not only from New York’s social scene but from a heartbreak that still haunts her. Here, among the seaside community that has embraced her since childhood, she finds comfort in the familiar rituals of summer.

But this summer is different. Budgie and Nick Greenwald—Lily’s former best friend and former fiancé—have arrived, too, and Seaview’s elite are abuzz. Under Budgie’s glamorous influence, Lily is seduced into a complicated web of renewed friendship and dangerous longing.

As a cataclysmic hurricane churns north through the Atlantic, and uneasy secrets slowly reveal themselves, Lily and Nick must confront an emotional storm that will change their worlds forever…

  • The Chase

    The Chase by Elle Kennedy

The Chase by Elle Kennedy is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in the new adult Briar U contemporary romance series. This technically a spin-off of the Off-Campus series and features secondary characters getting their own HEAs, but you don’t have to read the previous series for this. Have you read this one?

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.

And that his best friend has a crush on me.

And that I just moved in with them.

Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

  • The Princess Plan

The Princess Plan by Julia London

The Princess Plan by Julia London is $1.99! This is the first book in a new series by London and I gave it a B-:

The characterization is there and romance readers will delight in the snark-fest, though the romantic resolution doesn’t feel fully realized with all the extra plot threads weighing it down.

Princes have pomp and glory—not crushes on commoners.

Nothing gets the tongues of London’s high society wagging like a good scandal. And when the personal secretary of the visiting Prince Sebastian of Alucia is found murdered, it’s all anyone can talk about, including Eliza Tricklebank. Her unapologetic gossip gazette has benefited from an anonymous tip about the crime, prompting Sebastian to take an interest in playing detective—and an even greater interest in Eliza.

With a trade deal on the line and mounting pressure to secure a noble bride, there’s nothing more salacious than a prince dallying with a commoner. Sebastian finds Eliza’s contrary manner as frustrating as it is seductive, but they’ll have to work together if they’re going to catch the culprit. And when things heat up behind closed doors, it’s the prince who’ll have to decide what comes first—his country or his heart.

  1. Deianira says:

I love the cover of “The Princess Plan” – beautiful colors, classical composition.

“Fortune’s Pawn” is a good read if you like SF mixed with romance (which I very much do) – & Ripley-crossed-with-Starbuck is an apt description! I’ve read both this one & book 2, “Honor’s Knight” (also very much worth reading), but haven’t yet circled back for book 3. It’s on my 2021 reading list, I swear! Too many books, too little time unencumbered by pesky little things like family, friends &, you know, a job.

  2. Darlynne says:

I’m a big fan of the Fortune’s Pawn series. Well, anything written by Rachel Aaron/Bach really. I’d also recommend Ann Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series and Tanya Huff’s Valor series, both in a similar vein, slightly less romance. Come for the space opera, stay for the capable and honorable women.

  3. Msb says:

Romeo: Oh, I am fortune’s fool. Stealing from Shakespeare is stealing from the best.

  4. kkw says:

“I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start.”
Because…agency is awful? What would it mean to be that kind of girl and why wouldn’t she want to be? Her plan is to just wait around for him?
Has anyone read this? I’m wondering if that bit is actually indicative of the book?

  5. Laura says:

Um if you don’t like schmaltzy novels maybe Romance isn’t your genre? LOL I loved The Golden Hour so I have high hopes for A Hundred Summers. Because I love schmaltz. 🙂

  6. Lynn S says:

@ Laura Honestly I don’t get the “schmaltz” description. I read Summer Wives which was excellent. I would not call it a romance. It leaned more toward literary. The writing was impeccable. Some scenes I can still vividly remember. I would not describe it remotely as schmaltz which is how I view, say, Hallmark movies. If anything I would warn romance fans that Beatriz Williams writes darker books.

  7. Alex says:

I really enjoyed the Fortune’s Pawn series. I will say that I think the series should be counted as a whole, just one book doesn’t resolve all the plot stuff. It also has a overarching romance that becomes more central in the third book (though it is built up throughout the three).

I’m on a new adult kick lately so I think I’m going to have to pick up the Elle Kennedy one, I recently got hired so I’m telling myself I can afford to treat myself.

  8. Yu says:

Oh fortunes pawn or the entire deviana Morris trilogy is definitely one of my favorite space opera ever. The plot is really interesting, the side characters are well developed and the heroine is just so so so badass in a realistically competent and self aware way. Definitely worth picking it up *_*

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Laura: with all due respect, I believe you can like (even love) romance while still disliking “schmaltz.” I realize that one woman’s schmaltz can be another woman’s angsty catnip, but I have a very long list of favorite emotional/angsty/dark romance writers and I wouldn’t call any of them schmaltzy.

  10. Star says:

@Alex – Congratulations on the new job!

@Laura – I love romance and hate (to the point of being occasionally offended by) schmaltz. This does mean that I’m somewhat picky about romance and that a lot of things that work very well for other people don’t work at all for me, but I still love the genre. And, as @DDD says, it’s also true that what reads as schmaltzy to one person might not to another — and vice versa with the same two people!

  11. Laura says:

@DiscoDollyDeb @Star Whoops, I didn’t offer much context in my comment: I was making fun of the reviewer! I love schmaltzy romances. In fact, I have to make myself read other books outside of Regency Romances that feature dukes or rakes or gentleman in the title. (and I’m queer LOL go figure) So I couldn’t agree more: “One woman’s schmaltz can be another woman’s angsty catnip” Plus I also agree with @LynnS The Golden Hour wasn’t “Schmaltzy”. Have a great Saturday everyone, I wasn’t trying to ruffle feathers unless one of you are the reviewer!
