  • Devil in Spring

Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas

RECOMMENDED: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99! So many readers were looking forward to this book when it first released, and Carrie gave it a B+:

Devil in Spring was so delightful that I read it slowly because I had to take frequent squee breaks. I truly cannot sufficiently express how overjoyed this book made me. That said, I don’t think it will be everyone’s catnip, because the main character sometimes seems overly young and naïve, even given her character quirks.

    An eccentric wallflower…

Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

    A cynical rake…

After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.

    A perilous plot…

After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy-and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven…

  • Strange Practice

    Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw

Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw is $2.99! I’ve been so curious about this one because the heroine is a “fast-talking doctor to the undead.” It sounds all sorts of awesome. I definitely bought this after the last time it was on sale. If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought!

Meet Greta Helsing, fast-talking doctor to the undead. Keeping the supernatural community not-alive and well in London has been her family’s specialty for generations.

Greta Helsing inherited the family’s highly specialized, and highly peculiar, medical practice. In her consulting rooms, Dr. Helsing treats the undead for a host of ills – vocal strain in banshees, arthritis in barrow-wights, and entropy in mummies. Although barely making ends meet, this is just the quiet, supernatural-adjacent life Greta’s been groomed for since childhood.

Until a sect of murderous monks emerges, killing human and undead Londoners alike. As terror takes hold of the city, Greta must use her unusual skills to stop the cult if she hopes to save her practice, and her life.

  • True Love

    True Love by Jude Deveraux

True Love by Jude Deveraux is $1.99! A bit of a deviation from her usual historical fare, this is a contemporary romance set on Nantucket. Readers mentioned some issues with pacing; the book drags at times. On the other hand, a few readers loved the rich detail of the characters and the setting. It has a 3.9-star rating on GoodReads.

Just as Alix Madsen is finishing up architectural school, Adelaide Kingsley dies and wills her, for one year, the use of a charming nineteenth-century Nantucket house. The elderly woman’s relationship to the Madsen family is a mystery to the spirited Alix—fresh from a romantic breakup—but for reasons of her own Alix accepts the quirky bequest, in part because it gives her time to plan her best friend’s storybook wedding.

But unseen forces move behind the scenes, creaking Kingsley House’s ancient floorboards. It seems that Adelaide Kingsley had a rather specific task for Alix: to solve the strange disappearance of one of the Kingsley women, Valentina, more than two hundred years ago. If that wasn’t troubling enough, Alix must deal with the arrogant (and extremely good-looking) architect Jared Montgomery, who is living in the property’s guesthouse.

Unbeknown to Alix, Jared has been charged with looking after her while she lives on the island—an easy task for him, considering the undeniable chemistry between the two. But Jared harbors secrets of his own, which, if revealed, may drive a wedge between the pair.

With a glorious Nantucket wedding on the horizon, sparks fly, and the ghosts of the past begin to reveal themselves—some of them literally. Finding their lives inextricably entwined with the turbulent fortunes of their ancestors, Alix and Jared discover that only by righting the wrongs of the past can they hope to be together.

  • Sea Witch

    Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning is $1.99! This is a Little Mermaid retelling that focuses on Ursula’s origin story. I have a weakness for villain stories, so I’m really curious about this one. I believe we reviewed the sequel to this one on the site, but I want to avoid spoilers!

Wicked meets The Little Mermaid in the captivating origin story of the sea’s most iconic villainess, perfect for fans of Heartless and Dorothy Must Die.

Ever since her best friend Anna died, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. Hiding her talents, mourning her loss, drowning in her guilt.

Then a girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears on the shore, and the two girls catch the eyes of two charming princes. Suddenly Evie feels like she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But magic isn’t kind, and her new friend harbors secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad—or on two legs—without Evie’s help. And when Evie reaches deep into the power of her magic to save her friend’s humanity—and her prince’s heart—she discovers, too late, what she’s bargained away.

RE: Strange Brew. If all the previous recs haven’t put in on your list I’ll just add two words. Baby Ghouls.

    You’re welcome.

  2. Erin says:

Strange Practice is a ton of fun and I highly recommend it (and its sequels)!

  3. Penny says:

Chiming in also to recommend a Strange Practice! I love Greta and the concept is just engaging and such a fun read. I bought this maybe a year ago when it had previously been on sale, and proceeded to consume the other books in the series. Definitely worth it, even not on sale!

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

One of the KDDs today is Rachel Van Dyken’s STEALING HER which I read last year and enjoyed it very much. The reason I mention it is because the second book in the duet, FINDING HIM (released this year), is one of my favorite books of 2020 so far—but I do think you need to read the earlier book first.

  5. harthad says:

I enjoyed the series, but I wouldn’t call Greta fast-talking; it implies she’s some sort of con artist. She’s competent, committed, and caring. She’s surrounded by people who recognize those qualities. And yes, baby ghouls. (Book two is even better: Well Monsters. I need one.)

  6. HeatherS says:

“Esther the Wonder Pig” is wonderful.
I have been following the FB page for years. Steve (one of Esther’s dads) absolutely adored her from day one and aside from being full of piggy hijinks, the book also clears up misconceptions about pigs and shows what living with one is actually like.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

Ugh, Devil in Spring is the WORST of the Ravenels series (which I otherwise really like.) Pandora has plans to never marry, but, whoops! Handsome duke shows up so why bother to stick with your pesky little values and dreams! Why bother with that premise if you’re just going to wreck it?
