  • Queen of the Conquered

Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender

Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. I talked about this book on the podcast after attending BEA this year. If you’re in need of a book where a heroine embraces her grief and rage and seeks revenge, this certainly seems to fit the bill.

An ambitious young woman with the power to control minds seeks vengeance against the royals who murdered her family, in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy world embattled by colonial oppression.

Sigourney Rose is the only surviving daughter of a noble lineage on the islands of Hans Lollik. When she was a child, her family was murdered by the islands’ colonizers, who have massacred and enslaved generations of her people—and now, Sigourney is ready to exact her revenge.

When the childless king of the islands declares that he will choose his successor from amongst eligible noble families, Sigourney uses her ability to read and control minds to manipulate her way onto the royal island and into the ranks of the ruling colonizers. But when she arrives, prepared to fight for control of all the islands, Sigourney finds herself the target of a dangerous, unknown magic.

Someone is killing off the ruling families to clear a path to the throne. As the bodies pile up and all eyes regard her with suspicion, Sigourney must find allies among her prey and the murderer among her peers… lest she become the next victim.

Queen of the Conquered reckons with the many layers of power and privilege in a lush fantasy world—perfect for readers of V. E. Schwab, Kiersten White, and Marlon James.

  • Stealing Mr. Right

Stealing Mr. Right by Tamara Morgan

Stealing Mr. Right by Tamara Morgan is 99c! This is a romance between a jewel thief and an FBI agent. The book is told through the heroine’s POV and some reader’s wanted more romance between the hero and heroine, but readers say the banter is great.

“A sexy, fun, cat-and-mouse chase that hooked me from page one!” –Jennifer Probst, New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author of The Marriage Bargain

    I’m a wanted jewel thief.
    He’s FBI.
What’s that saying? Keep your friends close…and your husband closer.

Being married to a federal agent certainly has its perks.

    1. I just love the way that man looks in a suit.
    2. This way I always know what the enemy is up to.

Spending my days lifting jewels and my nights tracking the Bureau should have been a genius plan. But the closer I get to Grant Emerson, the more dangerous this feels. With two million dollars’ worth of diamonds on the line, I can’t afford to fall for my own husband.

It turns out that the only thing worse than having a mortal enemy is being married to one. Because in our game of theft and seduction, only one of us will come out on top.

Good thing a cat burglar always lands on her feet.

  • The Honeymooner

    The Honeymooner by Melanie Summers

The Honeymooner by Melanie Summers is 99c at Amazon! One of my trusted friends, who I met at book club and is a fellow bookseller, had this to say:

Really cute and fun read. Libby is such an appealing, funny and flawed character. Melanie Summers has joined my ever growing list of must read authors.

From bestselling author Melanie Summers comes the wickedly funny, ridiculously romantic spinoff of her highly-acclaimed Crown Jewels Series…

Twenty-nine-year-old workaholic Libby Dewitt lives by the motto ‘if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’ She’s finally about to start her dream life with her steady-as-a-rock fiancé, Richard Tomy. Together, they’re the perfect power couple—right down to the fact that he’s agreed to use their honeymoon to help further her career in mergers and acquisitions. But ten minutes before the wedding, her dreams dissolve via text message.

Devastated and humiliated, Libby escapes to Paradise Bay alone. She’s got two goals for her trip: to devise a plan to get Richard back and to convince resort owner Harrison Banks to sell his property to her company. Unfortunately, when she arrives, she discovers that tall, dark, and built, Harrison is not about to make anything easy for her.

Instead, he derails her plans while at the same time, bringing out a side of Libby she’s kept carefully tucked away—a carefree, adrenaline junkie. After a few days together, Harrison’s got her wondering if the life she always wanted was meant for some other girl. Suddenly, Libby must decide which version of herself she wants to be.

Will she go back to her comfortable, safe life, or risk everything to be with the only man who’s ever made her feel truly alive?

  • Zero Sum Game

Zero Sum Game by S.L. Huang

RECOMMENDED: Zero Sum Game by S.L. Huang is $2.99! This was previously self-pubbed, I believe, so you may have read this one. Carrie wrote a Lightning Review for this book and gave it a B+:

Zero Sum Game is an awesome, fast-paced, inventive science fiction thriller about a mercenary whose superpower is her ability to do complicated math almost instantly.

A blockbuster, near-future science fiction thriller, S.L. Huang’s Zero Sum Game introduces a math-genius mercenary who finds herself being manipulated by someone possessing unimaginable power

Cas Russell is good at math. Scary good. The vector calculus blazing through her head lets her smash through armed men twice her size and dodge every bullet in a gunfight, and she’ll take any job for the right price.

As far as Cas knows, she’s the only person around with a superpower…until she discovers someone with a power even more dangerous than her own. Someone who can reach directly into people’s minds and twist their brains into Moebius strips. Someone intent on becoming the world’s puppet master.

Cas should run, like she usually does, but for once she’s involved. There’s only one problem…

She doesn’t know which of her thoughts are her own anymore.

Re STEALING MR. RIGHT: If there hasn’t been one already (it’s possible there has been and I just missed it), I think a Rec League for romances between a criminal and the law enforcement agent sent to track him/her would yield some good books. I currently have no fewer than three m/m romances on my tbr that feature an art thief and the FBI agent tasked with bringing him to justice, so obviously there’s a market for that trope.

  2. HeatherS says:

@DiscoDollyDeb: Please share the titles of those m/m romances! They sound like fun. 🙂

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@HeatherS: here are the three I have on my tbr:

    ICECAPADE by Josh Lanyon.

    KING ME by Lucy Lennox.

HEART OF THE STEAL by Avon Gale & Roan Parrish. (I wonder if they regret that punny title now.)

Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café is 99 cents until Sunday:

In the last six months, Zach moved to the country, his wife left him, and he was diagnosed with cancer. Now he’s simply trying to survive. But when a pretty woman comes into his favorite café and collapses with a groan of despair, he feels something he thought he’d lost long ago: curiosity.

Veterinarian Jenna learned one lesson from her ex-husband: Men don’t want to deal with your emotions. It’s odd to have a stranger ask about her problems. It’s even more of a shock when he offers to solve one of them by fostering the sick kitten abandoned by its owners.

Zach and Jenna bond over kitten care. Could they have more? Zach is finally starting to hope for a future, ideally one that includes Jenna, but first he must deal with his past. Meanwhile, Jenna is afraid to risk her heart on someone who might not survive.

Get your friends to lovers, mature romance, plus rescue cats in this sweet romance. The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at the Furrever Friends Cat Café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes.

That’s a great idea for a Rec League, DiscoDollyDeb!

I’m pretty sure I’ve said it on a previous post, but I enjoyed Stealing Mr Right. If you think you’ll like the premise, it’s a lot of fun.

  6. Elaine says:

I’m a big Tamara Morgan fan, and I loved all three books in the Penelope Blue series. She has a witty, snarky voice that always entertains. Another recommend for Stealing Mr. Right!

  7. Amanda says:

@DiscoDollyDeb: We can certainly add it to our Rec League schedule! Thanks so much for the idea!

  8. Emily C says:

@DiscoDollyDeb and others- There was a Heists Rec League last year that was one of my favorite and most expensive posts! I purchased Stealing Mr Right then and it’s been sitting on my TBR ever since.

While they weren’t specifically theif/agent romances, I feel like there was a lot crossover!

  9. Cristie says:

@DiscoDollyDeb– Apparently that trope is my catnip because I’ve already read two of the books you listed. Off to buy the third one.

  10. Jen says:

It seems like my waitlist at the library is being monitored. Books I’ve had on hold for MONTHS are showing up on these lists whenever they get down to the 2 week mark

Talia Hibbert has bundled her Ravenswood series into a box set that is selling for $4.99. The set includes 3 full length books and a novella. The set has been titled “Hold Me Close: A Cinnamon Roll Box Set”. For those who haven’t tried her, somewhat prickly heroines and the cinnamon roll heroes who love them are kind of a specialty of hers.

  12. drewbird says:

@DiscoDollyDeb – have you tried Alice Winters yet? The Hitman’s Guide might be right up your alley. Also some of the books in A.E. Wasp’s Pro’s and Cons series, and Rhys Ford has elements of this trope – for example with the Kai Gracen series it is a bounty hunter and a by-the-book Sidhe Lord. I mostly like this theme when they are working for a similar goal but just approach things in very different ways.

And for my favorite non m/m series, I ADORED Suzanne Enoch’s Samantha Jellicoe series – a world class thief and the billionaire she tried to rob but ended up saving from a bomb instead… It is awesome.
