When We Left Cuba
When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton is $1.99! This one features a character from the first book in this series, Next Year in Havana, but I believe you can manage this one as a standalone. If I’m wrong, though, chime in below! Here’s what Sarah had to say:
When We Left Cuba is beautiful and fascinating. Better recommendation comes from my house sitter earlier this year who very timidly asked if she could read my ARC of book three because she loves the series so so much and was so excited that a preview copy was in her vicinity.
In 1960s Florida, a young Cuban exile will risk her life–and heart–to take back her country in this exhilarating historical novel from the author of Next Year in Havana, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.
Beautiful. Daring. Deadly.
The Cuban Revolution took everything from sugar heiress Beatriz Perez–her family, her people, her country. Recruited by the CIA to infiltrate Fidel Castro’s inner circle and pulled into the dangerous world of espionage, Beatriz is consumed by her quest for revenge and her desire to reclaim the life she lost.
As the Cold War swells like a hurricane over the shores of the Florida Strait, Beatriz is caught between the clash of Cuban American politics and the perils of a forbidden affair with a powerful man driven by ambitions of his own. When the ever-changing tides of history threaten everything she has fought for, she must make a choice between her past and future–but the wrong move could cost Beatriz everything–not just the island she loves, but also the man who has stolen her heart…

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is $3.99! I believe Carrie has read the book and loved it and it was made into a mini-series. There seemed to be a few readers who felt the author inserted herself too much into the nonfiction narrative, but many enjoyed how the medical science in the book was written in such a relatable way.
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Gods of Jade and Shadow
RECOMMENDED: Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $2.99! Aarya wrote a Lightning Review of this one and gave it a B+, but mentions it is definitely not a romance:
There’s a touch of melancholy and longing that permeates the entire novel, but it ends with a premonition of hope. That’s all I can want in any fantasy novel.
The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore, for readers of The Song of Achilles and Uprooted.
Here we shall begin to tell a story: a tale of a throne lost, of monsters and magic. A tale of gods and of the shadow realm. But this, our story, it begins in our world, in the land of mortals.
It begins with a woman. For this story, it is her story. It begins with her.The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty, small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it–and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan God of Death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City–and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.
Mixing the excitement of the Roaring Twenties with Prehispanic mythology, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a vivid, wildly imaginative historical fantasy.

Necessary Risk
Necessary Risk by Tara Wyatt is $2.99! Holy biceps, Batman! This is a romantic suspense and the first in the Bodyguard series. The heroine is a former child star hoping to make a come back. Readers thought this was a great debut with fun dialogue, while others didn’t buy the immediate attraction between the hero and heroine.
Trained to protect against all danger, a professional bodyguard can provide all the muscle a woman needs. But when their hearts are on the line, love is the riskiest business . . .
SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME
Former child star Sierra Blake is making a stunning Hollywood comeback-and attracting a scary amount of attention. When her home is vandalized and her safety threatened, she knows it’s time to bring in the professionals. But from the moment she sets eyes on her indecently sexy new bodyguard, Sierra’s thoughts are anything but professional . . .
Few things in this world scare Sean Owens-until he realizes he’s in serious danger of losing his heart to his new client. No matter how much he wants to, Sean won’t let his feelings for the smart and gorgeous Sierra get in the way of doing his job. Because as the attacks against her escalate, crossing the line between business and pleasure could get them both killed.

“The Virgin River Collection: Volume 1” by Robyn Carr is $2.99 on Amazon. It contains the first four books in the Virgin River series: Virgin River, Shelter Mountain, Whispering Rock, A Virgin River Christmas.
“Virgin River”, the first book, is on sale by itself for $1.99, also on Amazon.
“Outlander” is also on sale for $1.99 on Amazon.
“An Unexpected Gentleman” by Alissa Johnson is free on Amazon right now. I read it some years ago and enjoyed it very much. I think she got the rights back and self-published it, which is why the cover is quite different from the lovely original.
I have a copy of Gods of Jade and Shadow, that I hope one day to be able to return to the library, so really happy for a chance to buy my own.
y’all are wreaking havoc with my budget
A high recommendation for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It’s both an amazing story and a very well-told piece of non-fiction.
I’ve been longing to travel to Havana these past few days again, so When We Left Cuba went straigh onto my Kindle. Thank you!
