  • Magic for Liars

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel where a non-magical heroine investigates a magical murder. One of my close friends gave this five stars and I trust her opinion. However, other readers on Goodreads say they were surprisingly a bit bored.

Ivy Gamble has never wanted to be magic. She is perfectly happy with her life—she has an almost-sustainable career as a private investigator, and an empty apartment, and a slight drinking problem. It’s a great life and she doesn’t wish she was like her estranged sister, the magically gifted professor Tabitha.

But when Ivy is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a faculty member at Tabitha’s private academy, the stalwart detective starts to lose herself in the case, the life she could have had, and the answer to the mystery that seems just out of her reach.

  • Goddess with a Blade

Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane

Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane is $1.99! This is an urban fantasy novel with an ass-kicking heroine and vampires. Readers complain that it’s slow to start, which I think is a common problem with any first book in a new UF series. Many, though, loved the heroine and thought she had a great blend of humor, badassery, and sexiness.

Rowan Summerwaite is no ordinary woman. Physical vessel to the Celtic Goddess Brigid and raised by the leader of the Vampire Nation, she’s a supercharged hunter with the power to slay any vampire who violates the age-old treaty.

A recent string of murders has her at odds with Las Vegas’s new Scion, the arrogant and powerful Clive Stewart. The killings have the mark of Vampire all over them, and Rowan warns Clive to keep his people in line—or she’ll mete out her own brand of justice.

Though her dealings with Clive are adversarial to say the least, Rowan is intensely aware of her attraction to him. But she can’t let it distract her from her duty—to find and battle the killer before more women die.

  • Romancing the Inventor

Romancing the Inventor by Gail Carriger

Romancing the Inventor by Gail Carriger is 99c at Amazon! This is a standalone lesbian romance novella with steampunk vibes. Readers loved how fun and snarky the novella was, but others didn’t really warm up to Genevieve, one of the heroines.

Imogene Hale is a lowly parlourmaid with a soul-crushing secret. Seeking solace, she takes work at a local hive, only to fall desperately in love with the amazing lady inventor the vampires are keeping in the potting shed. Genevieve Lefoux is heartsick, lonely, and French. With culture, class, and the lady herself set against the match, can Imogene and her duster overcome all odds and win Genevieve’s heart, or will the vampires suck both of them dry?

This is a stand-alone LBGTQ sweet romance set in Gail Carriger’s Parasolverse, full of class prejudice, elusive equations, and paranormal creatures taking tea.

    Delicate Sensibilities?
This story contains women pleasing women and ladies who know what they want and pursue it, sometimes in exquisite detail.

  • He’s Come Undone

He’s Come Undone by Adriana Herrera

He’s Come Undone is available for preorder for $2.99! This anthology comes out in May. This anthology has an amazing lineup of authors with all sorts of catnip and romantic pairings.

For him, control is everything…until it shatters, and now he’s come undone.

    “Appassionata” by Emma Barry
Piano technician Brennan Connelly lives to control details: the tension on a piano string or the compression of hammer felt. But he’s never faced demands like those heaped on him by Kristy Kwong, the diva who’s haunted his dreams for two decades. Kristy’s got her own secrets–the debilitating stage fright that’s kept her from performing publicly for years to start–and this concert is the last chance to save her career. But can he locate her lost passion without losing his precious control?

    “Unraveled” by Olivia Dade
Math teacher Simon Burnham–cool, calm, controlled–can’t abide problems with no good solution. Which makes his current work assignment, mentoring art teacher Poppy Wick, nothing short of torture. She’s warm but sharp. Chaotic but meticulous. Simultaneously the most frustrating and most alluring woman he’s ever known. And in her free time, she makes murder dioramas. Murder dioramas, for heaven’s sake. But the more tightly wound a man is, the faster he unravels–and despite his best efforts, he soon finds himself attempting to solve three separate mysteries: a murder in miniature, the unexplained disappearance of a colleague…and the unexpected theft of his cold, cold heart.

    “Caught Looking” by Adriana Herrera
When best friends Yariel and Hatuey’s gaming night turns into an unexpected and intense hook up, Hatuey can’t wait to do it again. Yariel is less certain–the major leaguer might seem to all the world like he has a heart of stone, but he’s been carrying a torch for his friend for years, and worries this will ruin the most important relationship in his life. That means Hatuey has to do all the work, and he’s planning to give it all he’s got. Yariel may be the one hitting home runs on the field…but Hatuey is playing a game of seduction, and he knows exactly how to make Yariel crumble.

    “Yes, And…” by Ruby Lang
When rheumatologist Darren Zhang accidentally sits in on acting teacher Joan Lacy’s improv class, he’s unprepared for the attraction that hits him–and he’s a man who likes to be prepared. Joan is caring for her ailing mother and barely has time to keep up her art, let alone date. But as the pair play out an unlikely relationship during stolen moments, they both find themselves wanting to say yes, and… much more.

“Tommy Cabot Was Here” by Cat Sebastian
Massachusetts, 1959: Some people might accuse mathematician Everett Sloane of being stuffy, but really he just prefers things a certain way: predictable, quiet, and far away from Tommy Cabot–his former best friend, chaos incarnate, and the man who broke his heart. The youngest son of a prominent political family, Tommy threw away his future by coming out to his powerful brothers. When he runs into Everett, who fifteen years ago walked away from Tommy without an explanation or a backward glance, his old friend’s chilliness is just another reminder of how bad a mess Tommy has made of his life. When Everett realizes that his polite formality is hurting Tommy, he needs to decide whether he can unbend enough to let Tommy get close but without letting himself get hurt the way he was all those years ago.

  1. NomadiCat says:

All I could think when I was reading Goddess With A Blade was that Karen Chance did this first and did this BETTER in her Cassie Palmer series.

Urban Fantasy is my favorite genre, Lauren Dane has written some of my favorite romance novels, but I was fully “meh” on this book and I noped out of the series after the first one.

  2. ReadKnitSnark says:

The Goddess With A Blade series gets better and more intense after the first one. Relationships, politicking, betrayal, a giant hunt through Europe for Big Bad… Also betrayal. Violence. And a smexy developing relationship.

You really should give the second book a try! (After that, they’re like potato chips…you gotta have another!)

  3. Carole says:

I really came to love the Goddess with a Blade Series – it is now on my automatic buy list. Agree try second book and then you will be hooked by complexity of characters and the excitement of the plot.

  4. The Other AJ says:

I personally loved Magic for Liars. Sarah Gailey is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

  5. Kareni says:

Magic for Liars kept me up late reading. That said, I don’t think it’s a book I’ll be likely to reread.

  6. Konst. says:

    One-clicked the anthology – can’t wait till May! 🙂

  7. Kit C. says:

Just checked around 9:20pm and Romancing the Inventor is $3.99 🙁 sad I missed the sale somehow!

  8. Tanvee says:

Found Magic for Liars to be a disappointing read – I was looking for world-building which simply didn’t exist, I didn’t particularly like the protagonist or any other characters and frankly the ending was disappointing as I had guessed most of the mystery simply because not enough characters are introduced for their to be much doubt.

  9. Tanvee says:

Sorry I meant – for ‘there’ to be much doubt. Hate typos.
