Iron and Magic

Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews is 99c at Amazon! It’s a Kindle Daily Deal and isn’t being price-matched. We featured this on sale two months ago, so if you missed out then, grab it now! This is the first book in a new series by Andrews and features a hero who was a bit of a villain in the Kate Daniels series.
No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.
Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.
Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she’s trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.
Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?
As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”
Hugh and Elara may do both.

The Richmond Thief by Lisa Boero is 99c! Lara, who is now a reviewer for the site, wrote a previous guest review for this one and it earned a B+:
I was bumbling along in a reading rut, neither excited nor bored, just, well… fine. Then, Lady Trent came along and blew me right out of my rut and into reading heaven. I love her! I want to be her! I want to be her friend! And yes, when talking about her ONLY exclamation marks will do!
Someone is snatching priceless jewels right off the necks of British aristocrats. With his intimate access to the parlors and bedrooms of Regency London, the Richmond Thief strikes again and again. The Bow Street Runners, the city’s only detectives, seem powerless to stop him.
Enter Althea, lady scientist.
As the young widow of a country gentleman, Lady Althea Trent is introduced to the upper-class social scene as yet another pretty face. But her own scientific inquiries and an invitation to act as an agent of Bow Street with the enigmatic Duke of Norwich propel her into the hunt for the Richmond Thief. The theft of her host’s diamonds and two potential murders only harden Althea’s resolve to find answers to the thief’s identity.
Unfortunately, Althea’s dangerous entanglements with the law and the mysterious duke inexorably lead her to a darkened library—where the masked Richmond Thief awaits.

Some Like It Plaid by Angela Quarles is 99c! I was hopeful that by the cover, the hero would be time-traveling to the future given the cityscape background. But do not be fooled, as it seems the heroine is the one who travels back to the hero’s time.
When Ashley Miller sees a Craigslist ad for an all-expense paid vacation to Scotland with a handsome Highland “escort”, she’s all over it. Worn out from working two jobs to pay off the debts her scam artist ex-husband left her with, she just needs a friggin’ break already. Rolling, misty mountains of the Scottish Highlands, here she comes!
But one minute she’s sipping a latte and the next she’s zapped to the 2nd century and promptly informed she’s managed to wed her handsome Highlander without even an “I do.” Oh, hell no.
After a devastating tragedy, Connall’s tribe is left with few marriageable women. When his Druid priest suggests a place filled with bonnie lasses, he of course agrees to go fetch one for himself. But nothing prepared Connall for his sassy new wife, nor his tribe for a woman determined to see equal rights for all women.
Now the men are threatening revolt if he can’t rein his young wife in, but it might be too late. The women are demanding the men get “woke”—which of course makes no sense because they already woke that morn—and give women “the vote,” whatever the bloody hell that is. Despite all that, Connall can’t stop wanting to convince his wife to get naked, and he’s starting to wonder if he’s been bewitched.
Only the more he gets to know her, the more he starts to think she’s just what they needed. If only he survives her next demand…

Truth or Beard by Penny Reid is 99c at Amazon and full price elsewhere. I know Reid is an auto-buy author for many of you and this one has an enemies to lovers feel to it, judging by the description. Readers say it has Reid’s trademark humor and quirkiness, but warn there’s a scene where the hero is with another woman. I know that’s an off button for some, but Reader Katie Lynn explained that it isn’t a form of cheating.
Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.
His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

The Iron and Magic book is soooooo awesome. I am jealous of anyone getting to read this for the first time. It makes a nice starting point if you don’t want to read the entire Kate Daniels series although seeing the redeemed villain story arc is fabulous. This book began as an April Fools joke that rabid fans decided they “must have” and the Andrews obliged.
Per Martha Wells: There’s a one day Amazon sale on the ebook of The Murderbot Diaries: Exit Strategy. It’s down to 2.99. Rogue Protocol will be on sale tomorrow, and Artificial Condition on Friday.
This is an awesome series and usually pricey.
@MaryK: Thanks!
According to Amazon, Some Like it Plaid is currently the #1 best seller in “Earth-Based Religions” and I am so confused.
I DNFed the first Kate Daniels book (didn’t hold my interest), but I love a well-done redeemed villain, enemies to lovers, and ominous magical women so I gave Iron and Magic a shot, and was floored at how much I loved it. I now understand why so many people have told me I would love Ilona Andrews. They were right. I get it now. (After Iron and Magic, I read the entire Innkeeper series in three days.)
Like JudyW says, I think it makes a great starting point that doesn’t involve committing to a ten-book series. I know I probably missed some wider context without reading the Kate Daniels books first, but I think it fully stands on its own.
@Batman: Behold the effects of categories determined by keywords (“Druid” in this case) rather than chosen by humans with an interest in keeping them contextually appropriate.
I agree with Judy W about how awesome Iron and Magic is. I refused to read the KD series for the longest time because I didn’t want to commit to that rabbit hole but I&M convinced me to read it. (Spoiler:KD is not my favorite Ilona Andrews heroine). Iron and Magic is a great standalone even though it’s set in the KD world.
