  • The Demigod Complex

The Demigod Complex by Abigail Owen

The Demigod Complex by Abigail Owen is 99c! This paranormal romance came out last month and I’m so curious about it. It’s the first in a series that blends mythology with a workplace romance. It is on the shorter side, but I’ll probably buy it anyway for the catnippy setup.

When Lyleia Naiad was head-hunted by Brimstone, Inc., for her job as Executive Assistant to a high-powered billionaire demigod, she was given one directive—do NOT fall in love with Castor Dioskouri. Doesn’t matter if he’s the son of Zeus and can electrify a room with a single glance. As an ex-nymph, she possesses a unique ability—a gift from the goddesses to protect nymphs from the randy gods—to resist her boss’s charms.

    Or so she thought.

He insists she accompany him to an alpha wolf shifter mating ceremony, an event where the pheromones fly, and so do clothes…and inhibitions.

Goddesses save her, because Castor has stolen into Lyleia’s heart, and she’s not so sure she can hold out much longer…

This novella was previously self published but has undergone a complete re-edit. Scenes were added, things were changed, but the kissing still remains!

  • Lady Helena Investigates

Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen

Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen is 99c! This is the first book in a historical mystery series, which is perfect timing if you’ve exhausted all the current historical mystery series recommendations. Some readers feel like there’s been a glut of releases in that subgenre, but others are always happy to have more options. It has a 4.0-star rating on Goodreads.

A reluctant lady sleuth finds she’s investigating her own family.

Step into Lady Helena Whitcombe’s world with the first novel in a series that will blend family saga and mystery-driven action with a slow-burn romance in seven unputdownable investigations.

1881, Sussex. Lady Helena Scott-De Quincy’s marriage to Sir Justin Whitcombe, three years before, gave new purpose to a life almost destroyed by the death of Lady Helena’s first love. After all, shouldn’t the preoccupations of a wife and hostess be sufficient to fulfill any aristocratic female’s dreams? Such a shame their union wasn’t blessed by children . . . but Lady Helena is content with her quiet country life until Sir Justin is found dead in the river overlooked by their grand baroque mansion.

The intrusion of attractive, mysterious French physician Armand Fortier, with his meddling theory of murder, into Lady Helena’s first weeks of mourning is bad enough. But with her initial ineffective efforts at investigation and her attempts to revive her long-abandoned interest in herbalism comes the realization that she may have been mistaken about her own family’s past. Every family has its secrets—but as this absorbing series will reveal, the Scott-De Quincy family has more than most.

Can Lady Helena survive bereavement the second time around? Can she stand up to her six siblings’ assumption of the right to control her new life as a widow? And what role will Fortier—who, as a physician, is a most unsuitable companion for an earl’s daughter—play in her investigations?

  • River of Teeth

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey

RECOMMENDED: River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey is $1.99! This is an alternate history fantasy novella that both Carrie and Susan have loved. It’s also been recommended in a few of the Whatcha Reading comments sections. Gailey is such a talented writer and one to watch!

In the early 20th Century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true.

Other true things about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two.

    This was a terrible plan.

Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge.

  • Thick: And Other Essays

Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom

RECOMMENDED: Think: And Other Essays by Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom is $1.99 at select vendors! Sarah did a podcast episode and gave this collection an A:

Thick is funny and significant and brain-widening and clever and sharp, and so very, very good. I can’t stop recommending it to people.

Smart, humorous, and strikingly original thoughts on race, beauty, money, and more—by one of today’s most intrepid public intellectuals

Tressie McMillan Cottom, the writer, professor, and acclaimed author of Lower Ed, now brilliantly shifts gears from running regression analyses on college data to unleashing another identity: a purveyor of wit, wisdom—and of course Black Twitter snark—about all that is right and much that is so very wrong about this thing we call society. In the bestselling tradition of bell hooks and Roxane Gay, McMillan Cottom’s freshman collection illuminates a particular trait of her tribe: being thick. In form, and in substance.

This bold compendium, likely to find its place on shelves alongside Lindy West, Rebecca Solnit, and Maggie Nelson, dissects everything from beauty to Obama to pumpkin spice lattes. Yet Thick will also fill a void on those very shelves: a modern black American female voice waxing poetic on self and society, serving up a healthy portion of clever prose and southern aphorisms in a style uniquely her own.

McMillan Cottom has crafted a black woman’s cultural bible, as she mines for meaning in places many of us miss and reveals precisely how—when you’re in the thick of it—the political, the social, and the personal are almost always one and the same.

  3. Georgina says:

I enjoyed Lady Helena Investigates, and thought it struck a good balance between mystery-solving and realism when it came to the constraints of being a young window. Looking forward to more in the series.
