Links: Strong Female Leads, Telenovelas, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Happy Wednesday! It is Wednesday, right?

February is almost at an end and with that hopefully some nicer weather. Or you know, we could get a snowstorm in March.

I think I’ve broken my reading slump with Joanna Shupe. Thank god! Hope you all have been doing some great reading in the meantime.

Sarah was interviewed over at Frolic. Catch up with her over there! (As if you don’t see enough of her here, lol.)

Sorry in advance that this opinion piece on Strong Female Leads may be behind a paywall. I was able to give it a read yesterday and loved it. There’s a line in there that when men say they want “strong female leads,” what they mean is that they want a woman who can do what a man does, but they still want to have sex with them.

Will anyone else be participating in Sourcebooks’ Trope Madness? I’m torn because I know what my personal bracket would be, but it certainly wouldn’t be close to the winning bracket picks!

What if I told you there was a telenovela tabletop roleplaying game in development? Thanks to Lyndon for sending this our way!

Looking for sci-fi and fantasy recs? Syfy Fangrrls has a list of nonbinary writers and comic book creators you should check out!

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

    I’m sorry that the only place I could find this was on a Facebook video, but the current Jeopardy champion, McKenzie Smith (who has been champion now for seven data) wants to use some of her winnings to buy and raise alpacas so that she can ethically-source the tarn she uses for her knitting & sewing projects.

    Data = days

    Tarn = yarn

    /stupid autocorrect!

    The NYT article is behind a paywall for me. As a side note, I’ve noticed some men commenting on “Birds of Prey” have as their main objection that they don’t find the women sexy. One in particular complained that all the women were ugly.

    DDD:
    Autocorrect should be called autocorrupt.

    Voice to text transcription is no better. My husband was recording a takeout order on his cell phone recently and we got a kick out of the results:

    1) paneer tikka masala = “paneer take a masala”
    2) paneer aloo = “Panera lu” (I guess it likes brand names)
    3) kadhai paneer = “could I paneer”

    It did understand vindaloo, though.

    So glad JY Neon Yang is on that Syfy list. I just finished “The Black Tides of Heaven” and it was beautiful.

  6. Kit says:

    Speaking of stupid autocorrect I once sent a text saying that I found some big boobs for my daughter.

    I meant big bibs, she was just starting solid food!

    I know SB Sarah has mentioned Madam CJ Walker in older podcasts — the Netflix trailer for “Self-Made” starring Octavia Spencer looks amazing!

    Related to novelas – if anyone is looking for a good podcast about them, definitely check out Noveleando with Gloria De Leon and Delia Gomez.
