  • A Duke by Default

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

RECOMMENDED: A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole is $1.99! We read this for my book club and we all agreed there wasn’t enough blacksmithing and sword-making. Carrie enjoyed this one and gave it an A-:

This is such a solid book – it’s tear-jerking, it’s inspiring, it’s sexy and romantic, it’s interesting (sword history!) and it’s funny. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice—and his attraction to her—but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

  • Highland Conquest

    Highland Conquest by Alyson McLayne

Highland Conquest by Alyson McLayne is $1.99! This is the second book in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod and I read and liked the first book in the series. The first book is also FREE! Readers like the heroine, who disguises herself as a boy. They also said this book can be read as a standalone. However, some felt part of the book’s conflict was solved rather quickly.

    HE WAS LOOKING FOR VENGEANCE
Laird Lachlan MacKay never planned on leading his clan, but when his older brother was murdered, he was left with no choice. His vow to avenge his brother has led him to the MacPherson clan—and their bewitching healer, Amber.

    INSTEAD HE FOUND HER
Amber MacPherson is desperate. Dressed as a boy to escape her clan’s treacherous leader, she runs right into Lachlan—who orders her detained. At first she causes him nothing but frustration, especially when she blackmails him into helping her clan. But when she’s threatened by the same man who murdered his brother, Lachlan will do whatever it takes to keep her safe—and by his side.

  • Secrets in Scarlet

Secrets in Scarlet by Erica Monroe

Secrets in Scarlet by Erica Monroe is 99c! This historical romance has a mystery at the heart of the plot and a heroine hiding her identity. Readers enjoyed the suspense aspects and say it can be read as a standalone, despite being the second book in a series. However, some felt the writing was a little uneven. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

When a girl is murdered at a factory in one of London’s rookeries, Sergeant Thaddeus Knight of the Metropolitan Police comes in to investigate. But it’s not just the factory owners that Thaddeus wants information on—the devilishly intriguing Poppy O’Reilly is a puzzle he’d like nothing more than to solve.

Protecting her young daughter is the most important thing to Poppy, and Thaddeus threatens the false identity she’s carefully constructed. The last thing she should do is allow Thaddeus close to her family, yet she can’t stay away from him. With danger around the corner, will the secrets of a scarlet woman lead to their undoing?

  • The Wrath and the Dawn

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel with romance elements and is a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights. Readers love the world Ahdieh built, but do mention there seems to be a love triangle in the first book that doesn’t quite work well. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

  1. Ariella says:

The wrath and the dawn is also being made into an excellent WEBTOON comic, if anyone really enjoyed that book.

  2. Deianira says:

Ah, “A Duke by Default”! Loved it. But then I’m a long-time (as in – gulp! three decades! – Georgia Ren Faire junkie, so this would have been an insta-buy even without Alyssa Cole as the author. In her hands, it was (of course) a really fun read!

Although I agree, Amanda – it needed more blacksmithing & sword-making.

And it reminds me, I need more modern-Scotland romances in my life…

  3. Lostshadows says:

I liked the writing in The Wrath and the Dawn, but I just couldn’t get past the fact the love interest had murdered multiple wives and DNFed it. (Yeah, yeah. I really should have expected that.)

No idea if the ending or sequel actually addresses this.

  4. Highlanders is best to read in valentines day I swear it.

    Daughters of Twilight

  5. Dorothea says:

If the cover of Highland Conquest is an accurate depiction of Scottish male attire, wee Amber’s disguise is going to be exposed quite quickly.
