  • Death Below Stairs

Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley

RECOMMENDED: Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley is $1.99! It was a previous book club pick and Sarah has great things to say about the series:

I love the whole series and it’s on my short (very short) list of books to give to friends who are grieving. Competence porn, women looking after one another, and a wonderful set of characters. And food porn too. High grade. Proceed with caution if hungry or do yourself a big gifty favor and read with snacks.

Victorian class lines are crossed when cook Kat Holloway is drawn into a murder that reaches all the way to the throne.

Highly sought-after young cook Kat Holloway takes a position in a Mayfair mansion and soon finds herself immersed in the odd household of Lord Rankin. Kat is unbothered by the family’s eccentricities as long as they stay away from her kitchen, but trouble finds its way below stairs when her young Irish assistant is murdered.

Intent on discovering who killed the helpless kitchen maid, Kat turns to the ever-capable Daniel McAdam, who is certainly much more than the charming delivery man he pretends to be. Along with the assistance of Lord Rankin’s unconventional sister-in-law and a mathematical genius, Kat and Daniel discover that the household murder was the barest tip of a plot rife with danger and treason—one that’s a threat to Queen Victoria herself.

  • A Duke a Dozen

A Duke a Dozen by Shana Galen

A Duke a Dozen by Shana Galen is 99c at Amazon and Kobo! The cover reminds me of the adage, “The higher the hair, the closer to god.” This historical romance also has an older heroine, who is in her forties.

They call him the Doomed Duke.

Phineas Duncombe, ninth Duke of Mayne, should not be the duke. After all, he had four—count them—four older brothers! Phin never wanted the dukedom, and the suspicious circumstances of the eighth duke’s death lead Phin to question the Countess of Longstowe. The beautiful widow isn’t at all what Phin expected. He’s intrigued by her and determined to seduce her. The countess is not interested in Phin romantically, but when she comes to him with another request, he can’t deny it. A few days in the country with Lady Longstowe reveal two truths to the new duke. One, he cares for the countess much more than any other woman he’s ever known. Two, Phin either has very bad luck or someone is trying to kill him.

They call her the Wanton Widow.

Annabel was barely eighteen when she was married to the elderly Earl of Longstowe. A harsh, sadistic man, the earl’s death was not something Annabel mourned. Now in her mid-forties, Annabel enjoys her widowhood and has no desire to ever be under a man’s thumb again. Not even a handsome duke like Mayne, who is far too young for her anyway. Annabel’s one desire is to find the daughter who was taken away from her. For that she needs a man with power and status. She needs the Duke of Mayne. When the two are thrust together, Annabel struggles to fight her attraction to the charming Phin. She’s losing the battle. But can she ever trust another man, especially with the one part of herself she’s never given away—her heart?

  • The Whole Package

The Whole Package by Marie Harte

The Whole Package by Marie Harte is 99c at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is the first book in the Veteran Movers series and I thought we’ve featured this on sale before, but I suppose not. Readers recommend this one if you have a weakness for military heroes, but some wished the romance felt less forced.

Always the caretaker, former Marine Reid Griffith wants to help his brother adjust to civilian life…and help other former servicemen. What better way to utilize their brawn, discipline, and charm than a moving company that hires veterans? But although Reid prides himself on being strategic, he certainly doesn’t plan to fall in the spotlight of one brilliant―and beautiful―PR whiz…

PR expert Naomi Starr is determined to bring Vets on the Go! into the spotlight. But when she meets Reid, it might mean breaking her rule to never mix business with pleasure. Especially once she discovers that underneath Reid’s sexy rough-and-tumble exterior is a vulnerable man who just might need what she’s got to give.

  • Well Hung

    Well Hung by Lauren Blakely

Well Hung by Lauren Blakely is $2.99! This is the third book in the Big Rock series, and admittedly, I love the cheeky covers and titles. However, I’ve been unable to get around to reading them because I believe the books are all hero POV, which isn’t my favorite

Here’s what you need to know about me — I’m well-off, well-hung and quick with a joke. Women like a guy who makes them laugh. Even better if he’s loyal and hard-working. That’s me.

Enter Natalie. Hot, sexy, smart, and my new assistant. Which makes her totally off limits…

Hey, I’m a good guy. Really. I do my best to stay far away from the kind of temptation she brings to work. Until one night in Vegas…

Yeah, you’ve heard this one before. Bad news on the business front, drowning our sorrows in a few too many Harvey Wallbangers, and then I’m banging her. In my hotel room. In her hotel room. Behind the Titanic slot machine at the Flamingo (don’t ask). And before I can make her say “Oh God right there YES!” one more time, we’re both saying yes–the big yes–at a roadside chapel in front of a guy in press-on sideburns and a shiny gold leisure suit.

We’ll just untie the knot in the morning, right?

The trouble is . . . I don’t know how to keep my hands off my soon-to-be ex-wife.

  1. Steffi says:

Snagged “Death Below the Stairs” up immediately, as apparently I’ve grown rather fond of historical crime fiction recently.

  2. Lynnd says:

Why Kill the Innocent by C.S. Harris is on sale for $1.99 at Kobo Canada (probably also in the US). I snagged both this one and the Ashley.

  3. DonnaMarie says:

Wait, Veterans NOT working some sort of bodyguard, security expert, off book special ops, or miscellaneous law enforcement? This is getting one clicked sooo hard.

Also, just finished the third Kat Holloway mystery, and the series remains uniformly wonderful.

  4. Lisa F says:

    Galen is so underrated IMO.

  5. Maureen says:

@DonnaMarie-I am so with you on that! I’m a big fan of Marie Harte-her Body Shop Bad Boys is the series that lured me away from my historical romance to contemporary! I do like this Veteran Movers series, I really enjoy just regular blue collar romance heroes. For some reason the description of moving people’s stuff is very interesting to me! Harte has a great way with heroes, she makes them so appealing. I’ve read the first three, and happily I just realized the 4th-Delivered With a Kiss has been available since last November! Not sure how I missed that…

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

A little bit late, but HIS ONLY VALENTINE, a collection of 13 stories by writers such as Sarah Mayberry, Kelly Hunter, Megan Crane, etc., is free in the Kindle Store right now.

  7. Escapeologist says:

“Death Below Stairs” is by a new to me author, the sample is delightful and there’s a whole series ahead! Oh and my library has both the ebook and audio available on hoopla/Libby. THANK YOU Bitchery!

While getting the sample on my Kindle, I saw a new T. KINGFISHER book, PALADIN’S GRACE, set in the same world as SWORDHEART. Happy day.

  8. Gina says:

Escapologist you have so many treats in store, try her Mackenzie series!
She also writes under the pseudonym Ashley Gardner if you enjoy the Death below stairs
I’m sure you will like her Captain Lacey series.

  9. Rachel F. says:

Thanks DiscoDollyDeb, I picked that set up!

  10. Escapeologist says:

@Gina thanks so much, I will check them out!
