Wild Child
Wild Child by Molly O’Keefe is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance, and the first book in the Boys of Bishop series. It has a 3.6-star average, but I really liked this review from Michelle:
Ignore the cover. The cover is miles away from what this book actually is, which is fucking BRILLIANT. Not that it isn’t sexy. It is. O’Keefe writes some seriously hot sex scenes. But the thing about this book is that she just claws her way right through the usual shallow, barely realized romance tropes to the stripped down core of her characters, and then she digs some more. She reaches in and digs around and pulls out great bloody handfuls of REAL.
Monica Appleby is a woman with a reputation. Once she was America’s teenage “Wild Child,” with her own reality TV show. Now she’s a successful author coming home to Bishop, Arkansas, to pen the juicy follow-up to her tell-all autobiography. Problem is, the hottest man in town wants her gone. Uh, Bolt combines with Breedlove? Really?
I like that Rolling Stone riff on the We Sold Our Souls cover…
I read I GOT A DUKE TO KEEP ME WARM recently and it was a fun read, but the cover is not accurate at all. The book is actually set in May and the hero is not even a duke and hardly blue-blooded at all (he’s a bastard son of a duke). Just thought I’d mention the inaccuracy in case anyone picks this book up wanting a wintery read.
@K.N. O’Rear: I agree about the cover! I almost didn’t read Kelly Bowen because of the cover and the punny title–I thought it might too much icing vs. cake for me. But Bowen is a wonderful writer and her books have humor and a lot of thought to them. Lots of cake and icing, too!
I read We Sold Our Souls and it was creepy and sad and made me feel drained afterwards but I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s gruesome the way Horrorstor is, so if that bothered you I’d say to skip it. It’s very good mythology, I guess I’d say?
Molly O’Keefe is a fabulous writer—she’s one of the few writers who’s an auto-buy for me. She’s not afraid of emotionally messy situations that put her characters through the wringer; and she’s not afraid of having her characters screw up (often more than once) before they learn from their mistakes. There’s usually an underlying melancholy in her stories and always plenty of angst. Love her books!

I really liked both of the Palace of Love books. I’m in a bit of a Regency romance funk right now (I keep DNF’ing authors I’ve loved in the past), but Julie Anne Long managed to hit a sweet spot with these two novels.
Wild Child was my first Molly O’Keefe, and it made her an auto buy author for me. This was a great book. You cannot go wrong here.
These are four great picks, all for different reasons. The Long is likely the best of the lot but I really like everything Hendrix does.
It’s true that the hero of Bowen’s “I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm” is actually the bastard son of a duke, but not by much. His parents married a few hours after his birth — long enough to keep him from the title but it would be wrong to think of him as an unacknowledged by-blow. In this he is like Constantine Huxtable in Mary Balogh’s “The Secret Affair”.
I really liked We Sold Our Souls but wanted to stress that it’s very definitely horror. There was at least one scene that I speed-skimmed, trying to avoid putting too many of the details into my head.
I thought Angel in a Devil’s Arms was okay—there’s good witty banter and found family, but the plot was pretty thin to the point that I thought the central “conflict” could have been eliminated and it could have just been about two people who had been hurt in the past trying to make a better go of it this time.
O’Keefe is an auto-buy author for me for all the reasons mentioned by others. And I one-clicked on We Sold Our Souls–can’t wait to dive in when I’m in a horror mood!
