  • Ninth House

    Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo is $3.99! This deal could poof at any moment because it was one of the biggest releases of last year and could be a Kindle Daily Deal leftover. This is Bardugo’s first adult fantasy novel and I want to warn of some graphic depictions of violence and body horror. The first chapter or so should give you a good picture on what you can/can’t handle.

The mesmerizing adult debut from #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. By age twenty, in fact, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers to this herself, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. These eight windowless “tombs” are well-known to be haunts of the future rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street and Hollywood’s biggest players. But their occult activities are revealed to be more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive.

  • Sorcery & Cecelia

Sorcery & Cecelia by Patricia Wrede

RECOMMENDED: Sorcery and Cecelia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer is $1.99 at Amazon! This was a Sizzling Book Club pick, too, in December 2012. This book blended a lot of my favorite things: clever women, epistolary storytelling, and a Regency setting. I know this is a reader favorite, too.

Two girls contend with sorcery in England’s Regency age.

Since they were children, cousins Kate and Cecelia have been inseparable. But in 1817, as they approach adulthood, their families force them to spend a summer apart. As Cecelia fights boredom in her small country town, Kate visits London to mingle with the brightest lights of English society.

At the initiation of a powerful magician into the Royal College of Wizards, Kate finds herself alone with a mysterious witch who offers her a sip from a chocolate pot. When Kate refuses the drink, the chocolate burns through her dress and the witch disappears. It seems that strange forces are convening to destroy a beloved wizard, and only Kate and Cecelia can stop the plot. But for two girls who have to contend with the pressures of choosing dresses and beaux for their debuts, deadly magic is only one of their concerns.

  • Soul Sucker

    Soul Sucker by Kate Pearce

Soul Sucker by Kate Pearce is $1.99! This is the first book in the Soul Justice series and sounds like all sorts of my catnip: fae hero, arranged mates, supernatural government agencies. The next book in the series follows the same couple, so I’m unsure if the first book is lighter on romance and heavier on the urban fantasy vibe. However, I didn’t see any mentions of a cliffhanger in this one.

Supernatural Branch of Law Enforcement empath Ella Walsh sucks memories from people’s heads. The job fills her mind with others’ nightmares and leaves her with little time for love, but if she doesn’t pair off with a mate of the government’s choosing soon, the psychic blowback will destroy her powers and her sanity.

The last time shapeshifting SBLE superstar Vadim Morosov worked with an empath, he got her killed and himself assigned to a desk. He worries about taking on another partner, but helping Ella track down an empath killer might be his only chance to save his career.

Naturally, the government decides to throw them together…

They resist at first, but they can’t deny the simmering heat between them. As the killer’s strikes grow closer to home, their bond gets tighter. And when the murderer finally traps Ella, her developing link with Vadim might be the only thing that can save her.

  • The Penthouse Pact

The Penthouse Pact by Cathryn Fox

The Penthouse Pact by Cathryn Fox is 99c! This is the first book in The Bachelor Pact and I’m curious, but the description gives me pause. First, the hero has a pact with his bros to never get married. Second, he runs over the heroine. These two things have the possibility to go very wrong.

Billionaire software developer Parker Braxton knows everyone wants something from him. That’s why he made a multi-million-dollar bachelor pact with his friends to never marry. But he never counted on running into, literally, the quiet but sensual Layla Fallon.

Layla isn’t afraid of hard work. Still, there is no light at the end of her student-loan tunnel. When Stuck-Up Suit—Parker Braxton—accidentally runs her over, it’s the last things she needs. She refuses his help, but he’s persistent. He’s also handsome, kinder than she ever expected, and she’s doing her best to ignore her attraction. Which is harder than it sounds when she’s recuperating at his penthouse.

Sparks fly. Hearts flutter. But falling for Layla could cost Parker more than just several million dollars.

    *touchdown dance*

I’ve been drooling over NINTH HOUSE for months and I’m still pretty far down the list at my library so I am THRILLED to grab it on sale. Thank you!

Sorcery and Cecilia is one of my all time favorite books!! I’ve reread it many times over the years. Both romances are wonderful and I love all the main characters.

  3. Ariadna says:

I read (and mostly liked) Ninth House. Caveat that I had read up on all of the trigger warnings AND approached the book having read only one of Bardugo’s previous books (the first one of the Grishaverse).

It’s a v. adult book that, at times is overwritten and attempts to cover serious topics but ends up doing so in a kinda superficial way. In any case, I did ended up getting exactly what I’d expected it from it and am definitely curious to see where the series goes from here.

  4. Lynn says:

I second the love for Sorcery and Cecilia — the sequels are pretty good too.

@Ariadna, YES, totally agree. I came here to offer a trigger warning for Ninth House, although I ended up enjoying the book. As the mother of a 12 year old girl, there was a particular scene that made me almost DNF the book, and I still feel a little sick when I think about it. I didn’t love the way the author kind of glossed over it either although I eventually decided that was a character choice and it fit with how that particular character would have dealt with the situation. Maybe. But I had to really grapple with whether I thought that scene was added just for shock value because if I really thought that, I would have been done with the book. So, just….be prepared, I guess.
