By Her Touch

By Her Touch by Adriana Anders is $1.99! This is the second book in the Blank Canvas series. The first one, Under Her Skin, is FREE! A warning that these romances on the darker side and feature abusive backstories. I was halfway through Under Her Skin when I bought By Her Touch. If you like angsty characters trying to rebuild their lives, check out this series.
He Will Always Bear the Scars
Undercover cop Clay Navarro left the Sultans biker gang a changed man. Its ringleaders may be awaiting trial, but he wears the memory of every brutal act he was forced to commit tattooed across his skin. He doesn’t have space in his messed-up life for anything gentle–not now, maybe not ever.
Dr. Georgette Hadley is drawn to the damaged stranger’s pain, intimidated but intrigued by the warmth that lies beneath Clay’s frightening exterior. But when the Sultans return looking for revenge, she finds herself drawn into the dirty underbelly of a life forged in violence…that not even her touch may be able to heal.

The Earl by Katharine Ashe is 99c! This is the second book in the Devil’s Duke series. It has a false identity, a road trip, and an opposites attract romance. Some readers loved the antagonistic relationship between the hero and heroine, but others mentioned some issues with liking the heroine in general.
How does a bookish lady bring an arrogant lord to his knees? Entice him to Scotland, strip him of titles and riches, and make him prove what sort of man he truly is.
Opposites…
Handsome, wealthy, and sublimely confident, Colin Gray, the new Earl of Egremoor, has vowed to unmask the rabble-rousing pamphleteer, Lady Justice, the thorn in England’s paw. And he’ll stop at nothing.
Attract.
Smart, big-hearted, and passionately dedicated to her work, Lady Justice longs to teach her nemesis a lesson in humility. But her sister is missing, and a perilous journey with her archrival into unknown territory just might turn fierce enemies into lovers.

Nocturna by Maya Motayne is $2.99! I picked this one for May 2019’s Hide Your Wallet because the premise sounded really neat. Readers warn that this one has a pretty slow build to any action, but others loved the world building.
The first in a sweeping and epic own voices debut fantasy trilogy—set in a stunning Latinx-inspired world—about a face-changing thief and a risk-taking prince who must team up to defeat a powerful evil they accidentally unleashed. Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo, and V. E. Schwab.
To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks.
As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.
After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.
But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley is $2.99 at select vendors! This is historical fiction with a queer protagonist and some magical realism. Reviews on Goodreads say don’t expect to have all the book’s questions answered by the end of the book.
1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties.
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is a sweeping, atmospheric narrative that takes the reader on an unexpected journey through Victorian London, Japan as its civil war crumbles long-standing traditions, and beyond. Blending historical events with dazzling flights of fancy, it opens doors to a strange and magical past.

Nocturna sounds intriguing! Is it YA or adult?
@Star: It’s published by Balzer + Bray, which is HarperCollins’ imprint for younger readers, so YA.
BY HER TOUCH us the best of the three Blank Canvas books, imho. The first one has a really dark backstory featuring a horribly-abusive ex, although I thought the love story was nice. The third one involved a woman who had been branded by a cult. Ugh. I just couldn’t. But I do like Anders other works (such as LOVING THE SECRET BILLIONAIRE) and look forward to her latest, WHITEOUT, a romantic suspense story set in Antarctica, due next month.
I borrowed the hardback of The Watchmaker of Filigree Street from my library, it’s a beautiful hardback. The book is well written, and I enjoyed reading it, but I do prefer clear resolutions and as mentioned it doesn’t have them, so I was left frustrated at the end. I would only recommend it if you don’t mind that lack of answers in a book.
Humble Bundle has a romance book bundle that includes the Anders book plus other books I’ve seen in recent books on sale posts
Thanks for the warning re:The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. I have seen this book in several places and have been tempted by the cover and the premise of historical magical realism. But I’m not a fan of wishy washy endings, especially if it feels like the author has painted herself into a corner.
I actually really like the ending to WATCHMAKER OF FILIGREE STREET, but it does maintain the mystery about the magical elements. And it also changes your perspective on one of the heroes in a way which might not sit well with romance readers.
