  • The Afterlife of Holly Chase

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

RECOMMENDED: The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand is $1.99! This is a retelling of A Christmas Carol and Carrie gave it an A-:

I was truly surprised and delighted by how this story ended up. It solved the ethical problems I had with the romance, it was clever, and I worked perfectly with everything that led up to it. I will be adding this to my holiday book box to read again next year!

On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.

    She didn’t.

    And then she died.

Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge–as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly’s afterlife has been miserable.

But this year, everything is about to change. . . .

  • You Say It First

You Say It First by Susan Mallery

You Say It First by Susan Mallery is $2.99! This is the first book in the Happily Inc series, which has a small town setting and wedding planning themes. I’m quite interested in the sculptor/carpenter hero, but Mallery’s romances don’t often have enough conflict for me. What are your thoughts?

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fool’s Gold romances invites you to visit Happily Inc., a wedding destination founded on a fairy tale

Sculptor Nick Mitchell grew up in a family of artists and learned from his volatile father that passion only leads to pain. As he waits on a new commission, he takes a day job as a humble carpenter at a theme wedding venue. The job has its perks—mainly the venue’s captivating owner, Pallas Saunders. Although he won’t let love consume him, for ecstasy with an expiration date, he’s all in.

Pallas adores Weddings in a Box. But if she can’t turn the floundering business around, she’ll have no choice but cave to her domineering mother and trade taffeta for trust funds working at the family’s bank. Then when a desperate bride begs Pallas for something completely out of the box, her irresistible new hire inspires her. Nick knows she doesn’t belong behind a desk, and she knows in her heart that he’s right—where she really belongs is in his arms.

  • The Wicked Wallflower

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale is $1.99! This is a historical romance that’s part of Rodale’s Bad Boys & Wallflowers series. The hero and heroine have a pretend engagement, and you know those always work out the way the characters intend.  Elyse reviewed the book and wound up giving it a C-, though Goodreads reviews says this is a series that gets better with each book:

I liked how Blake and Emma finally come together in the end, but getting there was a little rocky. The Wicked Wallflower wasn’t a bad book by any means, but with so many Regencies out there, it failed to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Lady Emma Avery has accidentally announced her engagement—to the most eligible man in England. As soon as it’s discovered that Emma has never actually met the infamously attractive Duke of Ashbrooke, she’ll no longer be a wallflower; she’ll be a laughingstock. And then Ashbrooke does something Emma never expected. He plays along with her charade.

A temporary betrothal to the irreproachable Lady Avery could be just the thing to repair Ashbrooke’s tattered reputation. Seducing her is simply a bonus. And then Emma does what he never expected: she refuses his advances. It’s unprecedented. Inconceivable. Quite damnably alluring.

London’s Least Likely to Misbehave has aroused the curiosity—among other things—of London’s most notorious rogue. Now nothing will suffice but to uncover Emma’s wanton side and prove there’s nothing so satisfying as two perfect strangers…being perfectly scandalous together.

  1. Ren Benton says:

SEA OF RUST by C. Robert Cargill was one of my top 10 reads last year, and it’s $2.99 currently. My mini review: “People are gonna people. Here, their insistence on peopling led to being exterminated by robots—which, having been born (so to speak) of people, proceed to behave an awful lot like… people. Full-blown imperialist subjugation and murder in the name of manifest destiny and all that happy crap. I was very invested in the adventures of Brittle the Cannibal Robot and her rebel frenemies, but the frame as a whole was not beneficial to my prevailing feelings of doom, despair, and futility. (+1 for sending me on a research quest about Judas goats)”

  2. Leigh Kramer says:

Spellbound is fantastic! One of my favorites of the year.

  3. Dee says:

I loved the older Susan Mallery books pre-Fools Gold. The Marcelli books (except the final one) were my jam. But ever since her books morphed into Robyn Carr/Debbie Macomber type stories I haven’t been able to enjoy one.
