  • Beard Science

    Beard Science by Penny Reid

Beard Science by Penny Reid is $1.99 at Amazon! This is part of the Winston Brothers series and can be read on its own. Readers seem divided on whether this was their favorite so far in the series or their least favorite. What do you think?

Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

  • Run to You

Run to You by Lara Adrian

Run to You by Lara Adrian is $1.99 at Amazon! This is part of Adrian’s 100 series, but the description assures it can be read as a standalone. It’s a bodyguard romance with hints of suspense. Readers note that the character chemistry is pretty high, but they also felt this book bordered on erotic romance.

He will do anything to protect her . . . even if it means breaking her heart.

Combat veteran Gabriel Noble survived the war overseas, but the stoic Baine International security specialist is in for the fight of his life when he’s tasked with bodyguarding beautiful lingerie designer Evelyn Beckham.

RUN TO YOU is a sizzling, suspenseful new standalone contemporary romance set in Lara Adrian’s bestselling 100 Series story world. Swoon-worthy HEA guaranteed, and no cliffhangers!

Once a celebrated model, Evelyn Beckham dominated the fashion runways of New York, Paris, and Milan. But life under the lights nearly destroyed her, and at the height of her career she walked away from it all. Now, five years later, Eve’s built a new life at the helm of Manhattan’s premier high-end lingerie boutique, L’opale. Chosen to design the bridal ensemble for billionaire Dominic Baine’s fiancée, Avery Ross, it seems Eve’s stars have finally realigned—until her return to the spotlight thrusts her into the crosshairs of a danger that’s been watching from the shadows, waiting for the chance to strike.

Gabriel Noble didn’t go to war to become a hero, but when he returned from the battlefield in Afghanistan it was with a chest full of medals and a broken body filled with shrapnel. Losing his leg derailed more than Gabe’s career, and when no one else was willing to take a chance on him, Baine International put him on their security team. Now, Gabe would do anything for Dominic Baine—including keeping a covert, protective eye on beautiful Evelyn Beckham as a personal favor to his boss and friend. But keeping Eve safe means keeping her close, and soon the lines between duty and desire begin to blur into a consuming passion too powerful to be denied. With Eve’s life in escalating peril and her faith in him certain to shatter, Gabe will have to risk everything to protect her while facing the most intense fight of his life . . . the battle for Eve’s heart.

  • Boneshaker

    Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest is $2.99! This is the first book in the Clockwork Century series and it’s a steampunk alternative history with some horror elements. I’ve read this one and mostly enjoyed it, but I will warn that Priest’s writing can be a little dense and dark at times.

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

  1. Lisa F says:

Puppy Christmas is one of my best of the year books!

    Also loved Beard Science!

  2. LauraL says:

Just one-clicked Puppy Christmas! I enjoyed the previous book in the series.

  3. Vår says:

    Puppy Christmas is nice.

But Beard Science is fantastic! I listened to all the Winston brothers series, but this one is – hands down – the best IMO. I listened to it three times already, and am so doing it again some time in the near future!

  4. SusanH says:

Beard Science is absolutely my favorite Penny Reid novel, but I could see how her humor might not be for everyone. It is by far the best twist on Pygmalion I’ve ever read. I love the emphasis on the heroine figuring out what *she* wants to change in order to be happy with herself, rather than continuing trying to please others. And I love Cletus’s devious mastermind self. He’s such an unusual hero.

  5. Tammy says:

Loved Beard Science! I think it my favorite in the series! Can’t wait for Engagement and Espionage next year!

  6. Mzcue says:

Another Beard Science fan here. Since the series outset Reid had been setting up Cletus, the hero, as an insufferable know-it-all who actually did save the Winston brothers time after time. His nosedive into love is one of the most satisfying comeuppances in contemporary Romance. Sweetheart Jennifer is both darling and capable. It is my favorite of the Winston Brothers, but reading the earlier books first is recommended for maximum delight.

  7. Ariadna says:

Band Sinister AND The Prisoner of Zenda are two v. different books by KJ Charles that are on sale for $0.99 from today until Dec. 20.

  8. Qualisign says:

@Vår While I had read Beard Science at least twice, I’d never thought about listening to it until your comment. You’re absolutely spot on. I think it may actually work better as an audio book, and it was good on the page.

  9. Tessa says:

Beard Science is my favorite of the Winston series by Penny Reid! I’ve already read it twice but purchased yesterday, because I know the mystery series she is publishing soon about Cletus and Jennifer will make rereads necessary.

  10. Betty Brookover says:

Put me with all the Beard Science fans. I love how this unlikely couple comes together.

  11. Jerrica says:

More squee for Beard Science. I thought it was the best book of the series.
