My brain isn’t wired to listen to audio books and podcasts, so I read the transcripts of SBTB podcasts that capture my interest. That said, those headphones would be a nice addition to my work gear. Horsies!

  2. HollyG says:

I love audiobooks and a few podcasts (SBTB #1). I really got into audible escape and using my library to bell save money since I listen to books in the car, cleaning house or playing on the computer. My favorite this year wa Naomi Novik’s Temeraire Series and Shelly Laurenston/G.A Aiken (I did a relisten of almost all of her series this year – loved the snarky strong women).

  3. Noel Stark says:

Loved your podcast with Jen Gunter and the Vagina Bible. So informative and eye opening. I bought the book because of it.

  4. Holly says:

I love the FBoL(F*ckbois of Literature)Podcast! I disagreed with their Mr. Darcy opinions, but their take down of Henry David Thoreau was epic!

  5. Heather says:

I’ve been listening to Fated Mates podcast a lot while grading papers. I love the insightful and often hysterical commentary from Jen and Sarah.

  6. Crystal says:

Podcast-wise – there was some season 3 of Serial, Slayerfest 98, Smart Podcast Trashy Books. Audiobook-wise, I listened to Born A Crime by Trevor Noah and am now listening to The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander.

  7. TartanRunner says:

i find audiobooks too slow so used to always listen to music but in the past three months ive really cotton into podcasts. I love the Fated Mates one for my romance fix and have a few other wellness and wellbeing related podcasts that i really enjoy (some of these can be a bit cringey so when i find one where i can relate to the speakers it makes me extra happy)

  8. Emily says:

I like listening to audiobooks on my commute. I prefer nonfiction in audio form as it seems to keep my attention longer.

  9. Gwen says:

Smart Bitches is the podcast I listen to most consistently (do I get extra points?) Also enjoying Dolly Parton’s World when I listen (I cried listening to the Neon Moss episode). And Rightnowish, which is interviews of interesting Oakland people by a guy who grew up in Oakland – the episodes are very short (around 10 minutes), and his interviews always leave me wanting to hear more.

Audiobooks – I tend to listen more to historical mysteries (but not too suspenseful), preferably with a romantic element. Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas, Below Stairs Mystery series by Jennifer Ashley, Oxford Medieval Mystery series by Ann Swinfen, Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn, Gil Cunningham Murder Mystery series (medieval Scotland) by Pat McIntosh. There are more. Also some fantasy/sci-fi/nonfiction… I’m listening to Circe by Madeline Miller, which is a beautiful audiobook, but I’m pretty sure there is no happy ending coming, given the ancient Greeks and their depressing stories. Circe is a fascinating person as written by Miller.

  10. Katie says:

Lots of podcasts, but especially Dated Mates and Heaving Bosoms

  11. JudyW says:

I JUST now got into audio books even though I’ve been reading digital for years. I am now a convert for life. Of course some are better than others just like books. I loved the murderbot diaries in audio (All Systems Red is first).

  12. Rebecca says:

In straight hours my biggest listen this year was the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes on audiobook. CW for homophobia, fat shaming, they’re not nearly as good as his vampire accountant series but since they were written in installments and basically unedited it was about 100 hours of lightweight background listening for work when even podcasts were too heavy, so on that very specific front they were exactly what I needed- lightweight, funny, and if you get distracted the thing you miss gets recapped five times later on anyways.

  13. SusanS says:

The two podcasts I listen to are On the Media from WNYC which looks at how the media covers the political events, and Hilarious World of Depression, which features interviews with comedians, musicians and actors who discuss their mental health history. It’s very insightful and encouraging.

  14. Lisa J says:

Audio books have been it for me this year. I walk every day and listen to a book. I also listen on the way to and from work. It’s at least an hour each way.

  15. K.N.O’Rear says:

The biggest thing I’ve enjoyed listening to lately is a Youtuber called SimQueen who does Sims 3 and 4 Let’s Plays. Currently I’ve been following her Through the Decades Challenge which actually has some pretty good storytelling aspects to it. I highly recommend her if you’re a fellow simmer or simply enjoy good Let’s Plays.

  16. Thalia Lewandowski says:

I have had a ball listening to romance book podcasts – Smart Bitches, Fated Mates & Smart Women Read Romance are my favorites!! I also love politics and am obsessed with Pod Save America, 538 and NPR politics.

  17. Lisa says:

    I love the Adventure Zone!

  18. Leftcoaster says:

Lucy Parker’s audiobooks. Got me through a loooong post op period.

  19. Keelie says:

I have been listening to a TON of audiobooks lately and there are several that I loved: “The Grace Year” by Kim Liggett, “Spinning Silver” by Naomi Novik, and “Sorcery of Thorns” by Margaret Rogerson.

I also take a lot of time listening to podcasts. Some of my favorites are: “How did This Get Made” (fun comedy bad movie commentary), “Ghosted with Roz Drez for Lez (comedy paranormal by Drag Queen, Roz),and “Why Won’t You Date Me?” (Comedian Nicole Byer discusses her online dating exploits and interviews past dates. HILARIOUS).

I’m a librarian and I do a lot of outreach (among other things) and so I spend a lot of my time on the road. In addition, I have to read a lot of different books for reader’s advisory and the book clubs that I lead. Here’s a library plug: y’all, get LIBBY through your local library! It has been a life saver for me.

  20. NCK says:

I’m not a big audiobook person because I have trouble focusing on them, so my favorite thing to listen to has been Lizzo. She single-handedly got me through my job hunt.

  21. Elspeth says:

The audiobook that I have really loved is Stephen Fry narrating his book Mythos. And the podcast I have been bingiing is My Dad Wrote A Porno. If you listen to that one I recommend you don’t do so while eating. Also totally unsuitable for work, around children,in quiet public places…

  22. Elizabeth says:

I’ve been really getting back into audiobooks this year! Lots of Tessa Dare, Lisa Kleypas and Sarah Maclean for this girl! *swoon
I’ve also been trying to catch up on Oh No Ross and Carrie, a podcast where two friends investigate fringe groups and products with miraculous claims. They approach each experience with such humor and empathy, along with a huge dose of skepticism. Also, Teachers Pet was a great podcast for investigative journalism.
It’s been a good year for my ears and my brain!

  23. Vanessa says:

I’ve been listening to lots of podcasts this year! While I like happy adventures and romance in my books, I lean heavily into true crime podcasts! My faves are In The Dark, My Favourite Murder and Last Podcast on the Left. And The Daily which is not true crime…

  24. Vanessa says:

I love listening to podcasts, predominantly True Crime, so this year my favourites were My Favorite Murder, Last Podcast on the Left, and In The Dark, but the list is long! I also love the Daily from the NY times.

  25. Erica says:

I’m listening to the beautifully cast Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and true crime podcasts

  26. Ashley says:

For podcasts, I’ve been enjoying Ologies, the History Chicks, and Court Junkie. For audio books, I’ve been listening to the Harry Potter series. I’ve read them so many times, it’s not an issue if my mind wanders while listening.

  27. Janira Gonzalez says:

I listen to the Fated Mates podcast on my commute to work

  28. Janira Gonzalez says:

I listen to the Fated Mates podcast on my commute to work.

  29. peggy h says:

I haven’t had the chance to listen to much this year, but hoping to get back to audiobooks next year! Having cute headphones would make this even more fun–ha! Thank you for hosting this every year, Sarah!

  30. Maureen says:

I have just started listening to audiobooks and I have been listening to Jennifer Ashley

  31. Jasmin Rodriguez says:

I’m really into true crime, so I’ve been loving the podcast ‘Talk Murder to Me’. Podcasts, in general, are so great and convenient! I can listen at work, while running errands, and just around the house so it’s my recent and lasting obsession. Other podcasts I’ve been listening to are ‘Martinis and Murder’, and ‘Stuff You Missed in History Class’.

  32. Abby says:

I listen to a bajillion different podcasts but I’ve really enjoyed Adventures in New America, from the same studios of Welcome to Night Vale. It’s wonderful and weird and thoughtful all at the same time.

  33. Soraya says:

I love audiobooks. I’m currently bingeing on C.S. Harris Sebastian St. Cry Mysteries and loving it. I just finish a relistening of the Inkeeper series by Lions Andrews and I’m about to start to relistening to The Dresden Files in anticipation of the new book.

  34. Vanessa Thomsen says:

I’ve enjoyed many audiobooks this year but my favorite production was probably Kill the Queen by Jennifer Estep.

  35. sarah says:

I’ve become an absolute podcast junkie this year. Current fave is This Podcast Will Kill You, two epidemiologists-slash-best-friends who discuss all manner of diseases and epidemics and medical mysteries.

  36. Tina says:

I’ve really enjoyed listening to audio books narrated by Steve West/ Shane East. The Be Ultimate podcast has been exceptional too.

  37. fairywine says:

Just music! I can never focus on the words without seeing the text, so audio books just don’t work for me. :/

  38. Andrea Thompson says:

I’ve loved listening to podcasts this year. My favorites are Bitch Sesh and Girls Girls. I also loved Office Ladies and He’ll and Gone. Thanks for the giveaway! Happy Hanukkah!

  39. Mei says:

Poem of the Day from Poetry Foundation

  40. Allison says:

I listen to lots of shows on NPR. One of my favorites is “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” because I really need to hear jokes about the news.
