Getting Played by Emma Chase. Hands down the most fun, enjoyable read of my year and a welcome change from some of my DNR historicals.

  2. Mei says:

All Systems Red (Murderbot) by Martha Wells

  3. Yaara says:

Sarah MacLean’s Wicked and the Wallflower – renewed my love for historicals after a long hiatus!

  4. Yaya says:

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone

  5. Elaine says:

Slow Horses by Mick Herron, and The Billionaire’s Wake-Up-Call Girl by Annika Martin!

  6. SQ says:

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

  7. Nushie says:

Block Shot by Kennedy Ryan. This book worked for me in so many ways. It’s essentially competence porn. It’s enemies-to-lovers and second chance rolled into one. The main characters are imperfect – messy in all the ways real people are. And most importantly, the heroine was a character I respected, even at her lowest moments. Also, the audiobook is pretty phenomenal. It’s on Hoopla, if anyone has access to that through the library.

  8. Robin says:

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. I borrowed this from the library and loved it so much I bought my own copy, then proceeded to do everything but force other people to read it! Rarely do I read a book and just want to start again at the beginning all over again but this was one of those books. I read at least 150 books this year and this was my favourite!

  9. Natasha Rebello says:

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jallaludin. It’s a great book and all my friends heard about it!

  10. anybodies says:

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan
It’s a funny fantasy novel about a boy who goes to a magical world and tries to make peace. His relationships with boys and girls are more realistic than any other YA book I’ve ever read and his endgame romance is sweet.
Includes a hilarious take on gender essentialism, where elves take the same biological facts and come to opposite conclusions. For example, they think women are more sexual than men because they can come more times in a day and they don’t have a problem getting it up when they get older.

  11. Elise says:

A Madness of Sunshine by Nalini Singh!

  12. Brandie Ashe says:

The Kingmaker trilogy by Amanda Bouchet! I read all three this year and have not stopped raving about them to anyone who will listen.

  13. JenniferH says:

The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas

  14. Lizzy says:

My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. It’s not a romance but it’s a fantastic dark comedy in a fresh, interesting setting. There’s murder and dark themes but nothing explicit, if you’re on the fence about reading it.

  15. Harmonyb says:

I got my mom hooked on ebooks and recommended many Nora Roberts to her.

  16. The other jdk says:

Romance – The Art of Deception. – Sherry Thomas (I even managed to get my book group to pick the First Lady Sherlock novel
as our February read next year).

Nonfiction – She Said – Jodi Kantot & Megan Twohey

  17. Jiobal says:

The book I recommended Mist is definitely not a new book: A Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie King, which I discovered through this very site. Lots of lovely backlist to work through.

  18. Janiec says:

One of my faves from this year is Toni Anderson’s “Colder Than Sin.”

  19. TamB says:

Let’s Get Textual by Teagan Hunter
A Useful Woman by Darcie Wilde (third book is due out soon!)
Burnout by E&A Nagoski (even bought it for a friend)

  20. Deborah says:

The books I recommended most in 2019 are all pre-2019 favorites:
Act Like It by Lucy Parker
Family Man by Jayne Ann Krentz
    and
Murder in Thrall by Anne Cleeland

  21. Anony Miss says:

Happy Chanuka Sarah and crew! Book I recommended this year: I’m Fine and Neither Are You. I mean, I didn’t like love it love it, but it sparked some really great conversations.

  22. mel burns says:

Sweep of the Blade by Ilona Andrews.
    Happy Hanukkah!

  23. Mamselli says:

Definitely My Sister, the Serial Killer for me.

  24. LisaC says:

I read Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery earlier this year & could not stop thinking about it & recommended it to everyone I know! Very interesting biography of a woman who walked the Appalachian Trail by herself when she was in her 60s.

  25. Avengela says:

A Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews.

  26. Amy D says:

The book that I recommend the most to everyone is “Genius Foods” by Max Lugavere. As a fitness instructor, I am in love with this fitness tracker watch!

  27. Escapeologist says:

    Burnout by the Nagoski sisters
A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan
And always, anything by Lois McMaster Bujold

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, solstice blessings, peace, joy and love to all of you book friends!

  28. Pam Miara says:

Lady Daring Takes a Lover by Julie Ann Long

  29. Patricia M says:

    Sweep of the Blade

  30. Qualisign says:

Absolutely my highest recommendation this year was The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. So much integrity.

  31. Abby Pagano says:

I’d have to say Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Halbert. It was funny, sweet, relatable, consuming, and entertaining. It had me wrapped up from beginning to end.

  32. LaurieF says:

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas. I have book four waiting to be read right after boxing day. I love this series.

  33. Francene says:

Biased by Jennifer Eberhardt. It’s a hard book to read but very powerful. Eberhardt is an African American social psychologist who works with police forces to learn about hidden bias.

  34. eleine says:

American Dreamer by Adriana Herrera. All the books that have come out in the series, actually, but starting with that one.

  35. Moriah says:

Sherry Thomas’s The Art of Theft

  36. Sukari says:

I probably recommended How Long Til Black Future Month by N.K Jemisin most often, but quite a few others as well.

  37. SusanK says:

Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert to romance readers and the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews to everyone else.

  38. Sarah says:

The Calculating Stars was my favorite this year.

Thank you, bitches, for that rec!

If you too enjoyed this book, the TV show For All Mankind (apple+) has a similar revisionist and alternate history involving lady astronauts.

  39. Violet Bick says:

First, let me say, thank you, thank you for this giveaway! I decided I wanted a Withings watch this year, and I remembered that you usually have a coupon code whenever you have a giveaway, so I’ve been waiting for this so, so much! (Of course, let’s be honest, I hope I win! But, coupon code! Yay!!)

Add me to those listing Sweep of the Blade by Ilona Andrews as their most recommended book. (Although it’s not necessary, you may want to read the first three books in the Innkeeper series first, so you can savor the whole experience. And, if you are an Innkeeper fan, go to the authors’ website and read their serialized novella, Sweep With Me, which they are currently posting.)

  40. Kate says:

I’ve been recommending Burnout to everyone I know. It was life changing!
