Say No to the Duke

Say No to the Duke by Eloisa James is $1.99! This is the latest book in The Wildes of Lindow Castle series and I love the cheekiness of the cover. Readers say this one didn’t live up to their expectations while others really enjoyed the heroine.
One little wager will determine their fate—a daring escape or falling into temptation with a rakish lord.
Lady Betsy Wilde’s first season was triumphant by any measure, and a duke has proposed—but before marriage, she longs for one last adventure.
No gentleman would agree to her scandalous plan—but Lord Jeremy Roden is no gentleman. He offers a wager. If she wins a billiards game, he’ll provide the breeches.
If he wins…she is his, for one wild night.
But what happens when Jeremy realizes that one night will never be enough? In the most important battle of his life, he’ll have to convince Betsy to say no to the duke.

Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender is $2.99! I talked about this book on the podcast after attending BEA this year. If you’re in need of a book where a heroine embraces her grief and rage and seeks revenge, this certainly seems to fit the bill.
An ambitious young woman with the power to control minds seeks vengeance against the royals who murdered her family, in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy world embattled by colonial oppression.
Sigourney Rose is the only surviving daughter of a noble lineage on the islands of Hans Lollik. When she was a child, her family was murdered by the islands’ colonizers, who have massacred and enslaved generations of her people—and now, Sigourney is ready to exact her revenge.
When the childless king of the islands declares that he will choose his successor from amongst eligible noble families, Sigourney uses her ability to read and control minds to manipulate her way onto the royal island and into the ranks of the ruling colonizers. But when she arrives, prepared to fight for control of all the islands, Sigourney finds herself the target of a dangerous, unknown magic.
Someone is killing off the ruling families to clear a path to the throne. As the bodies pile up and all eyes regard her with suspicion, Sigourney must find allies among her prey and the murderer among her peers… lest she become the next victim.
Queen of the Conquered reckons with the many layers of power and privilege in a lush fantasy world—perfect for readers of V. E. Schwab, Kiersten White, and Marlon James.

The Boss by Abigail Owen is $1.99! This is the first book in the Fire’s Edge paranormal romance series. There’s also a free prequel available, if you’re interested. This has dragon shifters and fated mates, which may not be for everyone because the heroes in these setups tend to be more on the alpha side.
Finn Conleth leads his team of enforcer dragon shifters with an iron fist and a cold heart. Every dragon seeks his destined mate, but the process to turn the woman he once thought was his killed her and devastated him. He will never risk his heart again. His team is his family now. When his body eventually gives out, he’ll leave, living his last days alone.
Delaney Hamilton moved across the country to escape the freak fires that plague her. But when another suspicious fire erupts and rapidly escalates around her, her hopes for a new life go up in smoke. She has no choice but to turn to the mysterious men who come to her aid.
Finn knows the fire is dragon-caused, which puts Delaney’s problems directly in his jurisdiction. No matter how her wounded grey eyes call to every part of him, he refuses to risk her life in the mating process.
Until another dragon threatens to claim Delaney for his own, and Finn has to sacrifice everything to keep her alive…

Blade & Rose by Miranda Honfleur is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in a fantasy romance series and I’ve seen this one mentioned in the comments before. Readers say this was a promising start, though there was definitely room for improvement. Have you read this one?
A kingdom in turmoil or the love of her life. Which one will she save?
Elemental mage Rielle hasn’t heard from her best friend in far too long. Yet no one at the Tower of Magic seems to care about Olivia’s silence, or the curtain of secrecy surrounding the distant capital. Before Rielle can investigate, she’s assigned a strange new mission: escort a knight named Jon across the kingdom.
When whispers reveal mercenaries have killed the king and taken the capital and that no one is coming to help, Rielle can’t leave Olivia in peril. But as infamous mages and deadly assassins hunt Jon, she can’t leave him unprotected either—especially as she finds herself falling for his strength, his passion, and his uncompromising goodness. Her past returns to haunt her, a werewolf stalks their steps, and an ancient evil is gathering, yet the restraints forbidding their love strain and snap one by one.
Saving Olivia and the kingdom means defying orders and sacrificing her every ambition, and could mean losing the man who’s become so much more to her than a mission. Which will she choose: her best friend and the kingdom, or the love of her life?
If you like the romance of A Court of Thorns and Roses, the epic adventure of Game of Thrones, and a heroine who never gives up, you’ll love this romantic epic fantasy series.

I’ve read Blade and Rose and several of the sequels. It’s above average, but by the time I was a few books in, the emotional immaturity of the heroine really started to wear on me. It reminds me a bit in that respect of Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker series – if you found the heroine unbearably juvenile in the second book of that series (as I did), this series will eventually start to annoy you. If you didn’t mind it, then you may like this.
Cbackson couldn’t agree with you more. Luckily there were other relationships that were far more interesting. Love triangles make me weary and I was really hoping for a happy ending for Brennan. I’m only halfway through book 3 and find myself skipping big chunks. However I do appreciate how the plot moves, aside from the tedious triangle.
