  • The Henchmen of Zenda

The Henchmen of Zenda by KJ Charles

RECOMMENDED: The Henchmen of Zenda by KJ Charles is 99c! Carrie read this one and gave it an A:

If you are looking for a romance with a traditional HEA, this might not work for you. However, as an adventure story it’s great, and the HEA is fine if you are able to be a little bit flexible about what that means.

Jasper Detchard is a disgraced British officer, now selling his blade to the highest bidder. Currently that’s Michael Elphberg, half-brother to the King of Ruritania. Michael wants the throne for himself, and Jasper is one of the scoundrels he hires to help him take it. But when Michael makes his move, things don’t go entirely to plan—and the penalty for treason is death.

Rupert of Hentzau is Michael’s newest addition to his sinister band of henchmen. Charming, lethal, and intolerably handsome, Rupert is out for his own ends—which seem to include getting Jasper into bed. But Jasper needs to work out what Rupert’s really up to amid a maelstrom of plots, swordfights, scheming, impersonation, desire, betrayal, and murder.

Nobody can be trusted. Everyone has a secret. And love is the worst mistake you can make.

A retelling of the swashbuckling classic The Prisoner of Zenda from a very different point of view.

  • Blame It on Bath

Blame It on Bath by Caroline Linden

Blame It on Bath by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a bit of a marriage of convenience trope. While readers seemed to love the chemistry between the hero and heroine of the book, they wished that more of the book went toward solving the mystery of the plot. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Gerard de Lacey is determined to find the man who tried to blackmail his late father, both to stop the blackmail and to discover—and dispose of—any evidence the villain has about his father’s clandestine first marriage. If that proof is made public, it could prove Gerard and his brothers illegitimate, and strip them of their inheritance. And just in case, Gerard intends to find himself a wealthy bride. One way or another, he’s not going to be left destitute. But he’s not expecting a rich widow to find him and ask him to marry her.

Katherine Howe’s first marriage was one of dreary duty, arranged by her wealthy father to a penniless lord. Now that she’s being pressured to marry her late husband’s heir, she’s desperately in search of a better option. Gerard de Lacey, with his sinful good looks, charming manner, and looming scandal fits her needs perfectly. The fact that she’s nursed a secret affection for him for years only makes it better—and worse. Because Gerard will marry her, for her fortune—but will he love her for herself, as she loves him?

  • Love by the Letters

Love by the Letters by Grace Burrowes

Love by the Letters is 99c! This is a trio of historical romance novellas from Grace Burrowes, Kelly Bowen, and Vanessa Riley. I believe all of these authors have been favorably reviewed here on the site. I’m personally a Bowen fan. Like with any anthology, readers have opinions on which story was the strongest.

Watch out what you wish for…

For three couples, a letter promising an anonymous gift of wealth offers worldly success and dreams come true, provided each pair can learn not only to work together, but also to see differences as strengths.

A is for Amorous by Grace Burrowes

Adalicia Beauvais has no use for children, and even less use for most men. Plato wasn’t a bad sort, and Euclid was bright enough, but the modern variety of male holds no appeal for her. To earn ownership of a lovely country estate with a delightfully well stocked library, Ada must raise funds for an orphanage full of noisy, malodorous urchins.

As if that isn’t challenge enough, her only ally in this endeavor, is the headmaster, Lord John, who loves children, referees cricket matches, and plucks Ada’s very, very last nerve, even though she knows his devotion to the children is genuine, as is the orphanage’s need for funds. Opposites don’t always attract, but in this case, they must work together for thirty days, or neither Ada’s nor John’s dreams will ever come true.

B is for Beautiful Secrets by Vanessa Riley

Desperate to win proper dowries for his younger sisters, August Sedgewick has thirty days to sell his treasured art, make amends with his estranged brother, Lord Haverthon, and endure the prickly company of the business-minded Miss Nettles. The dedicated dressmaker is the toughest part of the deal for she’s more adroit at lecturing him on the habits of trade than succumbing to his charms. Yet, the sparkle of joy radiating in her spectacles as August distracts her with leisurely picnics and long rides in the park, teaches him more than he bargained for.

Modiste for those with secrets–pregnant brides-to-be, aging courtesans desperate to keep their patron’s attention, Mary-Anne Nettles would love the opportunity to have her talent out of the shadows and as she creates the bridal gown for the event of the season, the Earl of Haverthon’s wedding. To win that chance, the demure woman must spend time with the earl’s flamboyant brother helping him set up a business in trade. Yet, Mr. Sedgewick proves a difficult student, teaching Mary-Anne about fun and drawing her deeper into the unseen turmoil of Ton.

Can two very different souls rise above secrets to find a forever love for all the world to see?

C is for The Chapel of Love by Kelly Bowen

Henry Blackmore has always been a black sheep. He’s defied his ducal family, ignored expectations, and overcome tragedy to chase his own dreams of becoming a renowned architect. The only task standing between his fierce ambition and everything he’s ever wanted is the restoration of his family’s crumbling country manor. But first, he has to do something about Heaton Hall’s impossible steward.

Heaton Hall was essentially abandoned when Maeve Murray became steward after the death of her father. When Henry arrives with his pockets full of cash, Maeve is delighted – until she realizes that the money is not to help the struggling tenants but to restore the frivolous ballroom. Nonetheless, Maeve and Henry, they need each other, and working together might just restore more than a crumbling manor – it could restore two broken hearts!

  • Blood of the Maple

Blood of the Maple by Dana Marie Bell

Blood of the Maple by Dana Marie Bell is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance between a vampire hero and a dryad heroine, who happen to be neighbors. I love paranormal romances with fae characters and this has been on my TBR list for a while. Readers seemed to love the colorful cast of characters in the book and the rest of the series, while others felt like there was too much going on.

A seduction-gone-wrong leaves vampire Parker Hollis with a new vegetarian lifestyle and on the run from a vengeful witch. Moving to small-town Maggie’s Grove, Parker meets a redheaded dryad with green, leafy blood that draws him in a way he hasn’t experienced in decades. His new neighbor smells divine, and it isn’t long before craving gives in to need.

In a unique community of supernaturals, tree-loving outcast Amara Schwedler has never quite fit in. She’s scarred by a traumatic incident and feared by the local townsfolk. She’s convinced Parker will look elsewhere for a mate once he discovers she’s not one of the O-positive set, and can’t believe it when Parker finds her irresistible.

When the witch who’s been plaguing Parker’s life discovers the newfound attraction between Parker and Amara, she takes out her anger on the town. Can the supernaturals of Maggie’s Grove accept Amara and band together in time to withstand the assaults of the enraged witch?

  1. The Underwater Ballroom Society is a fantasy anthology (which I co-edited and wrote a story for, so: I’m not an unbiased party here!) that includes four romances with HEAs, including an f/f 18th century fantasy romance (between a smuggler and an agent for the crown) by Iona Datt Sharma that I think a bunch of SBTB readers would *love*. The ebook edition is on sale right now for $2.99 on Kobo,
    Smashwords,
    Amazon and elsewhere!

  2. Except that – ack! – I should never post when I’m this tired and election-stressed (here in the UK)…because it’s actually on sale for $3.99, not $4.99. I’m really sorry about the typo!

  3. …oh, lord. Today really is my day for typos, isn’t it? (I meant to say: It’s on sale for $3.99, not $2.99.)

Please forgive me, everyone. I just traveled from London to Wales to vote in a stressful election, and I CLEARLY cannot be trusted to type anything else in public today! 😉

  4. NomadiCat says:

THE UNDERWATER BALLROOM SOCIETY sounds totally up my alley. Purchased!

  5. Empress of Blandings says:

Strongly recommending the Henchmen of Zenda. Also, if British, strongly recommending ignoring the horrible weather and voting, please please please!

  6. Cristie says:

Omg a KJ Charles on sale! Thank you for the heads up!

  7. Michelle says:

For those interested in KJ Charles, Band Sinister is also on sale for $.99 at Amazon. (As is the Magpie Lord, but I think that sale is bit more frequent.)

  8. Lisa F says:

A really nice selection! I’ve read the Charles and the Linden, liked both.

  9. Meredith says:

I snapped up Henchmen – if you haven’t read it, Band Sinister is SUCH a good book (a good comfort read!) and the Magpie Lord series is one that I have re-read as well.

  10. Jeannette says:

A vote for “Blood of the Maple” – It was fun and the quirky town was a character in itself.
At the same time, I did not like “The Henchman of Zenda.” Other KJ Charles books are favorite reads, but Zenda just fell flat for me.

  11. Denisetwin says:

Another vote for Blood of the Maple – it was so unique and interesting. I felt the ending was a bit rushed and added too many things at once. I had enjoyed the slower pace of the beginning, but overall it was just so unique. I’ve probably read it five or six times now.

  12. shel says:

DRM-free audiobook fans, you might wanna check out Downpour.com.
Some (or even all??) of their digital download titles are up to 60% off.

Sorry, can’t find any details on when the sale ends, but it’s a Black Friday offering that’s been “extended.”

Not as cheap as Audible’s current promo, but I found a couple of wishlist items that were 60% off, and I can listen in my preferred app, which is worth the higher cost to me. YMMV.

Quick example: some of Ilona Andrews’ audiobooks (like The Edge series) are around $8-9, which is not that much more than Audible’s 3 month for $7 promo.

  13. Jen says:

Yes loved the henchmen. If you like that book I also recommend the another England books by Eric Alan westerfall. I think most of the books are under $3.00 and he states on amazon that the proceeds go to local lgbt groups. Just a warning there is a lot of sex in them.
