Shades of Wicked

Shades of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99! This is the first book in the Night Rebel series, which is a spin-off of Frost’s Night Huntress series. I read this one and I found it to be a lot of fun. The opening scene is quite…memorable. However, as someone who never got into the Night Huntress series, I’ll admit there’s a learning curve with understanding the world-building. I also made a cocktail for this one!
In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!
The Rule Breaker
Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he’s never been able to abide by the rules for long.
The Law Maker
Veritas’ normal role is police, judge and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait…well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s devil-may-care, roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers that Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences…

Risking It All by Christi Barth is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and the first book in the Naked Men series. Readers were torn on whether the hero was too alpha for them, but many really praise Barth’s writing.
Who doesn’t love Naked Men? In Christi Barth’s irresistible series, a group of close-knit friends talk out their problems with naked honesty on a popular blog. Bonded by a high-school tragedy, they’re moving on from the past—and fighting for the future with strong and sassy women.
Griffin Montgomery helps people. As a teenager, he kept his best friends alive after their soccer team’s bus crashed in the Alps. Now, as a Coast Guard search and rescue pilot, he saves lives with reckless abandon—until he goes too far and earns a lengthy suspension. Working on the Naked Men projects keeps his mind busy, but Griff’s itching to get back in the action. That’s when he finds his latest rescue mission: a pretty wallflower who’s stuck in her comfort zone.
Chloe Widmore doesn’t take risks. As a professional letter writer, she gets enough excitement out of expressing other people’s emotions. So when the hottest man she’s ever seen invades her coffee shop, Chloe surprises herself with how much she wants to be with him. Routines make her feel safe. Griff makes her deliciously unsafe, in so many ways. But falling for him is one risk she might just have to take . . . whether she’s ready or not.

Seven Kinds of Hell by Dana Cameron is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in the Fangborn series. Readers say this feels more like a thriller than urban fantasy. However, I found it super interesting that a few reviews note the main character isn’t your typical badass urban fantasy heroine. Instead, she’s just a young woman really trying to get her shit together.
Archaeologist Zoe Miller has been running from a haunting secret her whole life. But when her cousin is abducted by a vicious Russian kidnapper, Zoe is left with only one option: to reveal herself.
Unknown to even her closest friends, Zoe is not entirely human. She’s a werewolf and a daughter of the “Fangborn,” a secretive race of werewolves, vampires, and oracles embroiled in an ancient war against evil.
To rescue her cousin, Zoe will be forced to renew family ties and pit her own supernatural abilities against the dark and nefarious foe. The hunt brings Zoe to the edge of her limits, and with the fate of humanity and the Fangborn in the balance, life will be decided by an artifact of world-ending power.
Zoe’s mission takes her and her friends across the globe on a frenetic quest for no less than Pandora’s Box.

The Hellion by Christi Caldwell is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first book in the Wicked Wallflowers series. Some readers felt confused at the info dump of characters and plot points, as I believe this series is a spin-off. Meanwhile, others loved the chemistry between the main characters. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell’s Wicked Wallflowers series burns hot as two rivals meet in the flesh and feel the heat…
Adair Thorne has just watched his gaming-hell dream disappear into a blaze of fire and ash, and he’s certain that his competitors, the Killorans, are behind it. His fury and passion burn even hotter when he meets Cleopatra Killoran, a tart-mouthed vixen who mocks him at every turn. If she were anyone else but the enemy, she’d ignite a desire in him that would be impossible to control.
No one can make Cleopatra do anything. That said, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her siblings―even if that means being sponsored by their rivals for a season in order to land a noble husband. But she will not allow her head to be turned by the infuriating and darkly handsome Adair Thorne.
There’s only one thing that threatens the rules of the game: Cleopatra’s secret. It could unravel the families’ tenuous truce and shatter the unpredictably sinful romance mounting between the hellion…and a scoundrel who could pass for the devil himself.

“…she’s just a young woman really trying to get her shit together.” Relatable.
I was pleasantly surprised by Shades of Wicked. A lot of the time female characters get shown up by a male when it comes to things they are supposedly good at, and that’s so crappy. There’s a bit of that, but it wasn’t so bad. Veritas remains super powerful and Ian thinks it’s hot.
I mean, come on. Veritas is way way older and has held positions of power for longer than Ian has been alive. She’s also extra tough for spoiler reasons. There’s no way he should be as badass as she is.
ROSE’S BAKING BASICS by Rose Levy Beranbaum is $2.99. Beginners will be either educated or overwhelmed by the super detailed instructions (like, 8 pages of information per recipe…), and baking nerds will be either rapturous or irritated. I use the pie and tart crusts frequently and recently made the best apple pie of my life (REDUCE THE JUICE, Y’ALL). I have the hardback and can easily flip around to the parts I want to see; I can’t vouch for how easily navigable the voluminousness is in the ebook.
I was really disappointed by Shades of Wicked. I generally like Jeaniene Frost but this one really didn’t work for me. I am hopeful the next book in the series is better. I had to force myself to finish it. I found it just kind of meh.
Caldwell’s never really stricken a cord with me mostly because of their prose. Oh well!
