Wolf’s Mate

Wolf’s Mate by Celia Kyle is $1.99! This paranormal romance is the first book in the Shifter Rogues series. I’m very curious about this one because both the hero and heroine are shifters AND the heroine has a day job as an accountant. Have you read this one?
Danger shouldn’t be this sexy…
Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That’s why she’s an accountant–no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she’ll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf Declan Reed… or end up six feet under.
Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it’s time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he’s going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he’ll have to embrace the darkness he’s fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there’s no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.

Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian is 99c! This is the first book in the Midnight Breed paranormal romance series. I think I read this one when it came out in 2007 and it’s very much of that time, which is to say that hero is a domineering alpha. But the series is very marathonable.
He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell’s deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night—or this man—is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed—a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite.
Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them—from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.
Here, in the arms of the Breed’s formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all. . . .

RECOMMENDED: The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson is $1.99! This is a scifi/fantasy novel in a historical setting. Carrie gave this an A- in a Lightning Review:
It’s a great paranormal/fantasy in a historical urban setting that focuses on a group of people too often ignored in history and in non-fiction. And Li-lin is a wonderful heroine: smart, determined, and struggling against all kinds of barriers including her own sense of self. I’m very much hoping that Li-lin and her floating eyeball friend will return in a sequel.
It’s the end of the nineteenth century in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and ghost hunters from the Maoshan traditions of Daoism keep malevolent spiritual forces at bay. Li-lin, the daughter of a renowned Daoshi exorcist, is a young widow burdened with yin eyes—the unique ability to see the spirit world. Her spiritual visions and the death of her husband bring shame to Li-lin and her father—and shame is not something this immigrant family can afford.
When a sorcerer cripples her father, terrible plans are set in motion, and only Li-lin can stop them. To aid her are her martial arts and a peachwood sword, her burning paper talismans, and a wisecracking spirit in the form of a human eyeball tucked away in her pocket. Navigating the dangerous alleys and backrooms of a male-dominated Chinatown, Li-lin must confront evil spirits, gangsters, and soulstealers before the sorcerer’s ritual summons an ancient evil that could burn Chinatown to the ground.
With a rich and inventive historical setting, nonstop martial arts action, authentic Chinese magic, and bizarre monsters from Asian folklore, The Girl with Ghost Eyes is also the poignant story of a young immigrant searching to find her place beside the long shadow of a demanding father and the stigma of widowhood. In a Chinatown caught between tradition and modernity, one woman may be the key to holding everything together.

The Frame-Up by Meghan Scott Molin is 99c at Amazon! This is a quirky mystery with lots of nerdery and I love the bright colors of the cover. However, I gave this one a read and was overwhelmed by all the pop culture references being bandied about.
By day she writes comic books. By night, she lives them.
MG Martin lives and breathes geek culture. She even works as a writer for the comic book company she idolized as a kid. But despite her love of hooded vigilantes, MG prefers her comics stay on the page.
But when someone in LA starts recreating crime scenes from her favorite comic book, MG is the LAPD’s best—and only—lead. She recognizes the golden arrow left at the scene as the calling card of her favorite comic book hero. The thing is…superheroes aren’t real. Are they?
When the too-handsome-for-his-own-good Detective Kildaire asks for her comic book expertise, MG is more than up for the adventure. Unfortunately, MG has a teeny little tendency to not follow rules. And her off-the-books sleuthing may land her in a world of trouble.
Because for every superhero, there is a supervillain. And the villain of her story may be closer than she thinks…

I got The Frame-Up as a Prime First Reads book some time ago and was underwhelmed. It was okay, but not something I’d ever read again. It had an interesting premise, but it lost me by the end. I remember having to reread scenes and still being like “what just happened?”. I had a really hard time staying focused on it.
Really enjoyed the girl with ghost eyes. Read it in one sitting, appreciate the underused historical setting, and am also really hoping there’s a sequel soon.
I enjoyed The Frame Up immensely. It’s a bit of a soap bubble of a read, but when she walks into the comic convention, looks around and states she has found her people, well that’s a feeling I know well.
The sight of that Lara Adrian cover gave me “SHE WENT DOWN ON HIM IN A FULL BATHTUB” flashbacks. While looking for that (confirmed! and also “I can’t make you pregnant and I’m clean, baby, I swear”/”oh, okay, never mind the condom then”), it was mentioned the heroine has a history of cutting, so content warning for those who need it.
That Lara Adrian book was my first romance novel!!! I remember nothing about it other than it being free on kindle and about vampires!
Intrigued in the shifter rogues one, maybe my paranormal fatigue is ending!
