Links: News, Librarians, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hi, there! It’s Wednesday afternoon; do you know where your links are?

(Hint: they’re right here.)

There is only one more spooky week in October (the spookiest week!) and I refuse to believe it. I’m not ready for turkey comas and for the slow chill of winter to creep into my bones. However, I have no qualms about breaking out the down comforter a little early.

Illustrated covers are a divisive topic in romance right now (I love them! Many don’t.), but I enjoyed Goodreads’ write up on the design process for some recent titles.

Did you see the news?!  We’re now part of the Frolic Podcast Network, along with a dozen other shows. Nothing should change on the site end. You’ll still be able to find the podcast here every Friday. If you want to see what else the new network has to offer, you can find the roster here.

Are you a romance reader in the Baltimore area?

Come Celebrate at The Tell-Tale Hearts Romance Book Swap and meet members of our new Romance Book Club this Friday, October 25 at 7pm at Charm City Books in Baltimore! Come hither all of you romance readers!

Join us for our romance novel book swap and meet and greet to celebrate the founding of our romance novel book club at Charm City Books, The Tell-Tale Hearts! Meet fellow romance novel enthusiasts and newcomers, nibble on small bites, and swap an old romance novel with one you haven’t read before. Our first book club pick will be announced at the celebration, and the book club will meet once a month on Friday nights for steamy conversation and fun. This event is free and open to all, RSVP here!

The Kushiel’s Dart series has been optioned for film!

LitHub ranked the top 50 fictional librarians. Number one isn’t a surprise, but some of the top ten are a little iffy for me. What do you think?

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

    Such good news.

Had anyone learned what a sensory jar is? It’s a little bottle full of small things that float in water and glue. My bottle has spider friends and webs. And when I flip it, it goes, ‘thud’ then ‘whoosh’ quietly and very slowly.

  2. Crysta says:

Two incredulous questions over here: How is Marian only #20?! She’s literally got a whole song about her! [pause] HOW is Mrs Phelps only #17?! She gave Matilda all the books!

  3. harthad says:

@Crysta, I too am flabbergasted by Marian’s low ranking. I love her; innocent-seeming but entirely subversive, as all good librarians should be. And what is with Bunny Watson (of Desk Set) being only #12? Katherine freaking Hepburn, people!

  4. Ren Benton says:

@harthad: I was pleasantly surprised Desk Set was even on the list. That’s one of my top 10 movies, and I’ve never met anyone who’s heard of it.

  5. Katie says:

Desk Set is easily my favorite Tracy/Hepburn movie, and Bunny should be higher on the list. If only for that “Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight” bit they mention. And the rooftop lunch. At least Evie from The Mummy made the top 10. I can’t really argue with Giles; he was always a favorite for me.

  6. MaryK says:

I love Desk Set. I can never remember the name though and my brain files it as a Christmas movie.

Just commenting to say THANK YOU because I live near and work in Baltimore and I had no idea there was such a thing as Charm City Books, or that they had a romance book club!! Very exciting! Unfortunately I can’t make it this Friday but will definitely be looking out for future events there.

Just in case you haven’t seen it, check out http://www.ebooksforall.org and sign the petition to urge Macmillan to reconsider the limiting ebook model they will put into effect for libraries starting on 1 November.

The deal: Macmillan is only going to allow library systems to purchase ONE ebook copy of a new release in the first two months it’s out, starting 1 November. It doesn’t matter if your system serves 1,500 or 1,500,000 people. This means that the wait lists are going to be ridiculous, and the people who are most affected – besides libraries, who will doubtless get the blame for not having more copies from patrons who aren’t aware of the issue – are going to be readers and authors.

Macmillan’s idea is that libraries hurt their bottom line and they’re hoping to pressure readers into purchasing books by making sure that library wait lists are months out.

Please sign the petition and make as many people aware of this as you can, and ask them to sign it!

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

From photographer/cover designer Claudio Marinesco’s Goodreads interview: “ There’s also been quite a few times where models that just met on set walked out together at the end of the shoot. One time the girl actually left hickeys on the guy’s neck.“ I think there’s a romance novel waiting to be written in that quote.

/incidentally, Marinesco was the photographer of one of my absolute favorite covers, UNDERCOVER ATTRACTION by Katee Robert.

  10. So excited about the podcast network! Looking forward to sampling more romance podcasts!

@Heather S: Thanks for the petition link. My library sent out an email a while ago about this subject. Their blog post has some links. It is here: https://www.library.pima.gov/blogs/post/why-doesnt-the-library-have-unlimited-copies-of-digital-books/
