Links: Just Spooky Stuff

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Today is October 30th and the closest we can get to Halloween without Links actually being on Halloween. I have a shift at the bookstore today and tomorrow and we have Halloween events for both.

If you’re curious about my costumes, today is a Hargas cult/commune member from the movie Midsommar (highly recommend!) and tomorrow is a Crystal Lake camp counselor. I’m still waiting on my flower crown to arrive for the former, but I have a backup Velma from Scooby Doo outfit from a couple years ago.

Authors are listing their favorite Halloween candies and favorite supernatural beings over at Frolic! What are yours? I think Reese’s and the fae might be my choices.

One of my favorite things about the spooky season is Jezebel‘s scary story contest. Seriously, I’ve read some truly frightening things from this feature.

Kate Racculia (who writes some great, fun mysteries including the latest Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts, which has some major Clue and The Westing Game vibes!) has a lovely tribute to the rage and power of teen witches in media. Man, those characters were so formative for me as a young Amanda.

Sarah: I’ve been mentioning in links posts my attempts to purchase sustainable or washable clothing as much as possible (and also, as an aside, items that won’t make me itchy). So many of you responded that you’re focusing in similar directions that I wanted to share a $10 off link for ThredUp. NB: I will also get a $10 credit if you place an order through that link.

ThredUp is a secondhand clothing marketplace that also accepts submissions from your closet on consignment. You send them a bag or box, and they photograph, list, and sell them for store credit. They’re very picky, too.

I’ve purchased a pair of $120+ jeans for $25, and I am so flipping happy with them. It helps to know the brands and sizes that fit me, but the quality of the items I’ve purchased so far has been great, and all of it has been secondhand. So if you’d like to try ThredUp, your first purchase made through that link will yield $10 off.

Plan to take advantage of discount Halloween candy sales? Or maybe you want to swipe some candy from your kids’ trick or treat buckets? Well Boston Magazine went to one of my favorite local restaurants to discuss which wines pair well with specific Halloween candy.

Caitlin Doughty is my favorite mortician and I so enjoyed her brief talk at XOXO Fest:

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I’m a Tea Witch for sure even if it doesn’t match my birth month. My bff is a Night Witch.

This is funny-a few days ago I got a text from my daughter saying “We are going to be Crystal Lake Camp Counselors!”. I had no idea what she was talking about, and thought it was an actual job! Cue me googling Crystal Lake in her area-talk about clueless. I’ve never seen the Friday the 13th movies, and I smiled to see you mention it.

  6. Maureen says:

I forgot to mention my favorite supernatural being-can I say Buffy The Vampire Slayer? She wasn’t really supernatural, but she had those crazy powers. To me-that is a series that totally holds up. My favorite Halloween treat is probably Snickers-when I was trick or treating-back in the 1960’s and early 70’s-Snickers were a huge treat-that was a total score if you got them.

ThredUp link did not work for me. Anyone else having trouble?

  8. Amanda says:

@Violet Bick: It should work now! Looks like there was an extra character breaking things.

In an attempt to get rid of plastic bottles, I’ve been using solid bar shampoo and conditioner, and it actually works fine, even with my fair hair that tangles easily and looks greasy easily.

Peanut butter cups all the way. Trader Joe’s dark chocolate mini peanut butter cups have almost ruined me for Reese’s. Almost.

I’m not sure what’s up, Violet, but I’m sorry it didn’t work! I’ll paste it here in case that works better for you: http://www.thredup.com/r/CLVDI2

Tumblr user a-partofthenarrative organized a 13 Days of Halloween fic challenge revolving around Phantom of the Opera. All you POTO fans can read it here: https://a-partofthenarrative.tumblr.com/

Meanwhile I am off to the biggest costume party of all, Anime Weekend Atlanta, in memory of my hubby who founded the group that eventually produced the convention.
