Daughter of the Blood
Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop is $2.99! This is the first book in The Black Jewels series and was recommended in today’s Rec League. Ellen notes that this series deserves all of the content warnings. I know for many readers this was a formative series for their fantasy reading. What are your thoguhts?
The Dark Kingdom is preparing itself for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy–the arrival of a new Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But this new ruler is young, and very susceptible to influence and corruption; whoever controls her controls the Darkness. And now, three sworn enemies begin a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, and the destiny of an entire world is at stake.

Pleasures of the Night
Pleasures of the Night by Sylvia Day is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dream Guardians erotic paranormal romance series. Readers say this series and book is very steamy, but others found the plot/paranormal setup to be a little too complicated.
There are sensuous pleasures that can only be tasted in the night . . .
He comes to her in the twilight between sleep and consciousness to fulfill her secret desires. Lyssa Bates has never experienced such ecstasy, brought to her by a man whose deep, soul-penetrating blue eyes hold the promise of tempting intimacies and decadent pleasures. But this stranger, this lover, this immortal seducer is only a dream—a phantom of her nocturnal fantasies—until he appears, inexplicably, at her door in the flesh!
Lyssa aches for the reality of him, but there is grave danger in surrender. Because Captain Aidan Cross is on a mission, and the passion that consumes them both, body and soul, could have dire consequences in a world of dreams . . . and in the waking one as well.

The Bone Houses
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones is $2.99! This is young adult and I just started it. I’m really enjoying how eerie the setting feels. However, I’m not very far into it just yet. It’s also a book that I mentioned in today’s Goth Rec League.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Sky in the Deep in this bewitching, historical horror novel, perfect for fans of Holly Black and V.E. Schwab.
Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead. The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?
Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the deeply-buried truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairytale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

Just the Thing
Just the Thing by Marie Harte is $1.99! This is the second book in The Donnigans contemporary romance series and features a no strings attached arrangement. Readers say this is an emotional romance with a great happily ever after. However, some found the hero to be rather immature for someone in his thirties. The first book in this series if FREE!
A FLING MIGHT BE JUST THE THING…
Gavin Donnigan left the Marine Corps a shell of a man, hounded by guilt for deaths he couldn’t prevent. But teaching a self-defense class at the local gym brings some stability to his life—along with a gorgeous leggy blonde who won’t give him the time of day.Zoe York lost her twin sister to a freak car accident a few months ago. She’s been struggling to bury her grief, but it isn’t until she signs up for a self-defense class with its distractingly hot instructor that she begins to come out of her shell again. With the memory of her sister telling her to live a little, Zoe decides a fling with buns-of-steel Gavin Donnigan might be just the thing.
Soon they’re sparring both in and out of the gym. And for the first time in a long time, each is looking forward to tomorrow.

A character in JUST THE THING is named Zoe York? That just may be a little too meta for me.
I adored Daughter of the Blood and the entire Black Jewels series. It made Anne Bishop an autobuy for me.
I love Anne Bishop’s The Others series, so I thought I would go into her backlist. I bought the first two books in the Black Jewels series when they were on sale. I didn’t really like Daughter of the Blood, so much so that I haven’t tried reading the next book in the series even though I own it. Maybe it is one of those books you have to have read when it came out and it didn’t age well? I am trying to remember why I didn’t like it and all I remember is that I struggled to finish and didn’t really get the love for it that a lot of people were expressing. It didn’t work for me, and I read and love a lot of fantasy and paranormal books. A sale is a good way to try it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
@Laurel – I have a paperback copy of the Black Jewels omnibus that I’ve skimmed through, but I’ve never been able to bring myself to actually read it. I found it to have strong horror/torture porn elements that I can’t handle. Anne Bishop is a great writer, but she writes dark.
I can’t get past whatever is going on with that shirt on the cover of Just The Thing.
All three books in Elizabeth May’s YA Falconer trilogy are 99cents for Kindle. I think. Even though I’ve owned a paperback copy of the first book for years, I never got around to reading it so I decided to buy all three ebooks for that price.
About my comment above: I didn’t mean to add “I think” in there. The Elizabeth May books are definitely 99cents today.
The Falconer (Book 1) and The Vanishing Throne (Book 2) appear as daily deals for me. The Fallen Kingdom (Book 3) is also 99cents but it isn’t listed as a daily deal.
@Deb: The sports bra he ordered online came with a matching headband, the label of which said “Absorbent!” but not “headband,” so he wore it as a belt. It’s hella awkward for mopping sweat out of his eyes (OR ARE THOSE TEARS?), but he’s the kind of man who doesn’t let inconvenience stand in his way.
The Bone Houses sounds right up my street! I love the premise of this blog, it’s so fun!
While I finished the first three Black Jewels books, I was constantly putting them aside and then being reluctantly drawn into picking them up again. They are indeed dark, and some of the scenes have stayed with me (bacon grease, anyone?) despite the passage of time. I am however a big fan of Anne Bishop’s The Others books.
The Black Jewels trilogy in the same category for me as Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel trilogies. I read it when it first came out, and because I was late teens/early twenties, I loved it, and I continue to love it for largely though not entirely nostalgic reasons. It is not, however, good.
Saturday, the box set of the first three books in Eve Silver’s Dark Gothic series is 99 pennies. I believe these books were mentioned a few times in the recent Goth Rec League post. My feelings about individual books in the series range from 5-star to DNF, but they’re certainly worth trying for a buck.
