  • The Chase

    The Chase by Elle Kennedy

The Chase by Elle Kennedy is 99c! This is the first book in the new adult Briar U contemporary romance series. This technically a spin-off of the Off-Campus series and features secondary characters getting their own HEAs, but you don’t have to read the previous series for this. Have you read this one?

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.

And that his best friend has a crush on me.

And that I just moved in with them.

Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

  • Dumplin’

    Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

RECOMMENDED: Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy is $2.99! I highly recommend this book, especially if you love Dolly Parton. It’s funny and emotional, and the struggles Willowdean faces as a “self-proclaimed fat girl” will relate to many who suffered from those awkward teen years. Seriously, get this book. And the Netflix adaptation is fantastic.

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

  • Second Chance Cowboy

Second Chance Cowboy by A.J. Pine

Second Chance Cowboy by A.J. Pine is $1.99! Like the title suggests, this is a second chance romance. It also has a secret baby plot and a cowboy lawyer. There is definitely some angst here, which divided readers. Some felt it was understandable, while others felt there was too much of it.

Once a cowboy, always a cowboy

Ten years ago, Jack Everett left his family’s ranch without a backward glance. Now, what was supposed to be a quick trip home for his father’s funeral has suddenly become more complicated. The ranch Jack can handle—he might be a lawyer, but he still remembers how to work with his hands. But turning around the failing vineyard he’s also inherited? That requires working with the one woman he never expected to see again.

Ava Ellis broke her own heart the night she let Jack go. She was young and scared—and secretly pregnant with Jack’s baby. Now that he’s back and asking for her help, Ava sees her opportunity to right the wrongs of the past. But how will he feel about the son he’s never known? Could this be their second chance—or their final heartbreak?

  • Archer’s Voice

    Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan is $1.99! I haven’t read this one, but I’ve read other books by Sheridan. They are very emotional, very intense, and have alpha heroes. This book was recommended by Pat in a Rec League of books that really met our expectations.

When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer’s Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

I waited so long for The Chase because I love Kennedy’s Off-Campus series so much, but I was disappointed. There’s a weird love triangle, and I don’t buy the attraction/eventual get together of the main characters. If you’re a Kennedy fan this one could be worth it at the sale price, because I did like the second book in the series more than the first, and I’m looking forward to the third that comes out this October.

The one Mia Sheridan book I really enjoyed (Most of All You) was definitely not an alpha hero. I’ve had Archer’s Voice on my TBR forever and haven’t gotten around to it – I was turned off by the last Sheridan book, More Than Words, and kind of stuck her stuff to the bottom of my pile.

Shylock’s Daughter: A Novel of Love in Venice is $1.99 as a Kindle Daily Deal. Time travel to Venice where the actress heroine has a passionate affair with William Shakespeare. Original title of the novel was Serenissima back in the late 80s. I’m wondering how it holds up today. Erica Jong’s re-telling of “Fanny” was a favorite back in the day.

  3. Deianira says:

Some small part of me wanted “Archer’s Voice” to just be Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) reading romance novels. Sadly, though, it is not.

  4. Kareni says:

    Dumplin’ was a lovely read.
