The Governess Game

RECOMMENDED: The Governess Game by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the second book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse gave this one a perfect grade, an A:
It’s one of the best, if not the best, book I’ve read this year and it was worth all the hours I spent reading that should have been spent sleeping.
He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson
The accidental governess
After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart . . . without risking her own.
The infamous rake
Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling . . . and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

Shadowed by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99 at Amazon! I don’t think this was a KDD from yesterday, so I’m not sure how long this one will last. This is a romance between a witch and a vampire. I’m so curious about this series! This one is the sixth book in the Dark Protectors and while I believe it can be read on its own, you might benefit from reading in order.
Jase Kayrs was the fun brother. The warm, charming, easy-going brother of the vampire leaders. Until he was taken and tortured by demons with their evil mind tricks for nearly five years. Upon his return, he’s dark, violent, and not the man they all thought they knew. Not the man he once was. He’s haunted that the only reason the demons would have let him live was to use him as a weapon against his family—but he can’t figure out when or how he’ll explode. Plus, once again the demons are after Jase with a vengeance…or rather, a female demon he rejected is out to destroy him.
Then the king asks Jase for a favor… a big one. To mate with one of their allies in order to save her. She’s everything that’s good and light in the world… while he’s at home with darkness. Yet he agrees… knowing mating may be the only chance to save them both.

The Last True Cowboy by Laura Drake is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Be sure to check out the others as there are books by V.E. Schwab, Mary Robinette Kowal, & others. I read this book and found it interesting because the heroine gets pregnant from a one night stand. The hero has kind of crapped on their relationship in favor of rodeo fame and the heroine calls it quits. I liked that the heroine stood up for her own happiness and didn’t remain celibate, hoping the hero would come around. But I also know that some readers might avoid this one based on that. However, I can understand the reading of promiscuity = unexpected pregnancy. Sorry this is such a long description!
This cowboy’s got one last chance to prove himself.
Carly Beauchamp has loved cowboy Austin Davis since first grade. Ask anyone in their dusty, backwater New Mexico town of Unforgiven, and they’ll say “Carly and Austin” the way some say “big trucks and country boys.” But after years of waiting for a wedding ring, Carly’s done with being a rodeo widow . . .
>Austin never meant to put his career on the circuit before Carly. She’s always been his future, his one and only. But now that she’s moved on, he’s beginning to see where he went wrong, and he’ll do anything to win her back. The only thing is, Carly’s suddenly acting differently, and she’s definitely hiding a secret-one that will test the depth of their love and open up a whole new world of possibilities.

The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas is $1.99 at Amazon! This is another one of those deals where I’m unsure how soon it’ll expire, but the premise sounds really freakin’ cool! This is a debut and readers found it ultimately delivered despite some pacing issues.
Perfect for fans of Naomi Alderman’s The Power and Margot Lee Shetterly’s Hidden Figures comes The Psychology of Time Travel, a mind-bending, time-travel debut.
In 1967, four female scientists worked together to build the world’s first time machine. But just as they are about to debut their creation, one of them suffers a breakdown, putting the whole project—and future of time travel—in jeopardy. To protect their invention, one member is exiled from the team—erasing her contributions from history.
Fifty years later, time travel is a big business. Twenty-something Ruby Rebello knows her beloved grandmother, Granny Bee, was one of the pioneers, though no one will tell her more. But when Bee receives a mysterious newspaper clipping from the future reporting the murder of an unidentified woman, Ruby becomes obsessed: could it be Bee? Who would want her dead? And most importantly of all: can her murder be stopped?
Traversing the decades and told from alternating perspectives, The Psychology of Time Travel introduces a fabulous new voice in fiction and a new must-read for fans of speculative fiction and women’s fiction alike.

I bought The Governess Game a week ago for $4.99. I grew impatient waiting for it to be $1.99 and went for it. I regret missing this deal, but The Governess Game was worth the $4.99. So it’s definitely worth $1.99 in my opinion. I’m halfway through It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas and I’m really enjoying it. I’m hoping for a Lisa Kleypas or Tessa Dare sale on Amazon Prime Day.
The Fated Sky: A Lady Astronaut Novel by Mary Robinette Kowal (who was just announced as SFWA’s new president) is $2.99, as is Vengeful (Villains Book 2) by V.E. Schwab.
Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik is currently 1.99 on Amazon! Amanda gave it an A- a few months ago.
Someone tell me The Governess Game is less painfully silly than The Duchess Deal b/c I’m stalled out midway thru the latter but I’d still really like to read The Governess Game…
@Kat if you bought the ebook of The governess game within the last seven days you can return it for a refund. Once the refund has cleared you can repurchase at the lower price. Go to Your amazon account and look for the Content and devices link. Click the little box to the left of the title of the ebook you want to return. There will be a number of options. If you bought the book within seven days there should be a link that says Return for a refund.
I guess I’m one of the few people in the world who HATED the Governess Game. And I rarely hate anything by a decent writer. Dare’s more recent work has been painfully boring to me.
@JJB, I found The Governess Game to be quite charming (though I also laughed most of the way through The Duchess Deal so YMMV.)
@Ak—what did you not like?
@JJB ah, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I was really frustrated by the book and the silliness so finally it was a DNF one for me.
@Ak me too! governess game was a DNF for me – the first of Dare’s books I haven’t finished
@Ell – thank for the heads up on Polaris Rising!
@Marja Yesss, I too am glad not to be the only one! I’m rather new to reading proper romance books and that was so well-recommended I thought it might be good to try, but I can only read it when I’m in the mood for absolute fluff and that’s rare (and the farther I get into it, I think, the less tolerance I have.) I don’t hate it entirely, tho, so I’m hoping someday I’ll be able to finish it. Or at least skim the ending if I do give up.
Thank you @Francene. I just checked my account and I bought it 10 days ago. Good to know for next time.
@JJB, The Governess Game is pure fluff but the children are fun. I guess you really have to be in the mood for it. When I first started The Duchess Deal, it was almost a DNF for me because I didn’t understand what I was reading – it was over-the-top. I had enjoyed A Week to Be Wicked (my first Tessa Dare) so I decided to stick with it. In the end, I was entertained and I laughed, which is what I wanted. To me, The Governess Game is a little less over-the-top than The Duchess Deal, but still follows that kooky type of story-telling. I’m looking forward to The Wallflower Wager. After reading the excerpt, it may be even crazier than the first two.
I love the recent Tessa Dares and I’m very excited for the animal lover’s book (I don’t remember her name but she has to have her own book she just has to). I want to know if she ever figures out Regency veganism.
