Links: Dragons, Retirement Plans, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links! This is where we share awesome things we’ve seen on the internet. It’s also a nice reminder to take a moment during your day for yourself. But hey, I’m not your dad. You can spend your afternoon break however you like. Just make good choices, as I say to my brother. WHO IS IN THAILAND RIGHT NOW LIVING HIS BEST LIFE. (not that I’m bitter.)

Shark Week is cool and everything, but did you know Tor is hosting a Dragon Week?!

Were you glued to the Women’s World Cup like I was? While all of the athletes played their hearts out, there are still several issues with how women’s soccer is positioned in the larger world of sports:

It’s a tragedy that FIFA, the pompous and corrupt governing body of the sport, had to be pushed, kicking and screaming, into ever actually holding a World Cup for the women. The first official FIFA Women’s World Cup wasn’t held until 1991. Today, FIFA still offers the men’s World Cup $410 million more in prize money than it awards the Women’s World Cup — a gap that actually widened just last year.

Perhaps I’m optimistic and this year’s exposure will change things, or at least nudge them in the right direction. Regardless, I’m dying to get a jersey, but those things are selling like hot cakes.

I am obsessed with this retirement pact these friends have. It would also make a fantastic TV show, a la Golden Girls.

Of course, I’m sure you’ve all seen this modern day Regency dandy, but just in case you haven’t! He has an Instagram account, if you want to see all the costume porn.

I hereby decree that all recipes should include puppies!

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Publishing MA student Rose Ferrao has a survey about illustrated romance novel covers representing women of color. Takes about 10 minutes to complete (and you might find some under-publicized books you’d like to read).

Found an interesting article by Sue Bird while reading up on FIFA on the internet, So the President F*cking Hates my Girlfriend

Got my fingers crossed that I do the hyperlink right.

  4. Amanda says:

@PamG: Fixed it! The article title goes in between the link brackets!

  5. PamG says:

Sigh. I lurrrrve Sue Bird, so I figured I’d risk the humiliation. Guess y’all will have to Google it. Or try “the Google” as people my age are wont to say.

Article title is “So the President F*cking Hates my Girlfriend.”

    Thanks, Amaanda.

Warning about that survey Ren Benton posted: There’s a lot of pretty covers. Quite sure there’s a couple I knew from Cover Awe posts.

Here’s another bookish event to benefit RAICES, which offers free/low-cost legal services to immigrants, refugees, and families detained at the border. It’s an auction featuring signed books, manuscript critiques, and other goodies from 150+ authors including Jasmine Guillory, Heidi Cullinan, Madeline Miller, and Casey McQuiston (a co-organizer). It runs from now through July 22nd:

Just curious: will you guys be reviewing Spider-Man Far From Home? I love your guys’ MCU reviews and FFH has a lot of romance tropes worth commenting on.

RE: the retirement pact, I was reading recently that it is apparently becoming a trend for older single women to live together in groups. It gives them a feeling of security to have other women in the building to look out for them, and allows them to pool their money for utilities etc. so they end up spending less of their usually slim retirement funds. There are even agencies now who help match renters and roommates with women who have the room to spare in their homes. (I think one was called Roomers for Boomers.)

@NT thanks for the update! I am SO PSYCHED for the Bridgerton series and I just hope they hew close to the books. I don’t want to trade Quinn’s trademark humor for a lot of manufactured angst.
