Furiously Happy

RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $2.99! It’s a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:
Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. =
For fans of David Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling-the new book from Jenny Lawson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Let’s Pretend This Never Happened…
In Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Jenny Lawson baffled readers with stories about growing up the daughter of a taxidermist. In her new book,Furiously Happy, Jenny explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. And terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.
According to Jenny: “Some people might think that being ‘furiously happy’ is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he’s never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.”
“Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you’d never guess because we’ve learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, ‘We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.’ Except go back and cross out the word ‘hiding.'”
Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, was ostensibly about family, but deep down it was about celebrating your own weirdness.Furiously Happy is a book about mental illness, but under the surface it’s about embracing joy in fantastic and outrageous ways-and who doesn’t need a bit more of that?

Dating Mr. Right by Lauren Blakely is $2.99! This is a collection of four trope-tastic contemporary romances. This collection was released last week and each romance can be read as a standalone. I believe these are definitely on the shorter side, but there’s an age difference romance in there with an older heroine.
Indulge in four delicious tales of true love! In Dating Mr. Right, you’ll devour an online dating meets secret identity romance, a friends-to-lovers plus best friend’s brother scorcher, and a story of a pair of jaded lovers bitten by the insta-love bug, and an office romance with an age difference.
Lucky Suit…
I’m breaking up with set-ups. No more “can I introduce you to my son, nephew, grandson, the butcher, the guy down the street who mows my lawn.” Machines know what’s best, and I’ll rely on the great dating algorithms of the web to find the ideal man, thank you very much.Soon enough, it looks like I’ve found him — his nickname is Lucky Suit, and he’s hilarious, quick-witted and full of heart. But when I finally get together with him in person, I have the distinct feeling I’ve met him before.Turns out there’s more to our meeting than I had thought, and when we discover what truly brought us together, all bets are off.Once Upon A Red-Hot Kiss…
A man needs to stay far away from falling into bed with his best friend.Even if she’s sexy as sin, sweet as candy, and damn near irresistible every single day.But not only are Macy and I best friends, we’re also complete opposites. She’s perky, upbeat, outgoing and I’m . . . how shall we say . . . a little bit broody. Then, she reveals something to me that just might lead me to revise all my rules on friends in bed…
Too Good To Be True…
To say I’m wary of love would be an epic understatement. Keep that four-letter word far away from me. But then a matchmaker friend insists she can pair me with the perfect man for me. Even when sparks fly and chemistry crackles from the first date, I refuse to believe this kind of insta-connection can be the real thing.Even though for the first time it feels like it could be.Or is it just too good to be true?
Strong Suit (a short story)…
From the day I meet Ginny in the conference room, I’m smitten with the co-worker who’s ten years my senior. And I’m going to pull out all the stops to win her over.

Everything by Ilona Andrews is fantastic, but the Hidden Legacy series is my favorite. Start with the first book definitely, but you will want to get Wildfire to have on hand when you finish the first and second. They are excellent and re-readable. The secondary characters are as good as the main couple – Nevada’s family is a blast.
Bad Boyfriend by KA Mitchell is 99c at Amazon. I haven’t read it, but I do remember enjoying some of Mitchell’s other M/M work around– gosh, was it a decade ago? The time, she flies.
Came here to second the recommendation for the Hidden Legacy series. Laurel is entirely correct– having the entire series on hand when you start is a gift to your future self. And for anyone who prefers audiobooks, I can confirm that Renee Raudman’s narration of the series is perfection.
Absolutely seconed re: The Hidden Legacy series. Those books are compulsively readable and re-readable. They might be my favorite Ilona Andrews series (but then, I say that about almost every Ilona Andrews series at some point).
Adding to the Ilona Andrews love. The e-pub version of the most recent Innkeeper serial drops today, if you need something to tide you over until August. Check out their blog, as well. They posted a short short featuring Arabella a few days ago.
I’m digging on on all the Ilona Andrews love here and that works well for me. I also rec their work especially Hidden Legacy. I JUST did a re-read of Bad Boyfriend and I also recommend that one.
The cover of My One and Only Duke is so bright and fresh. It’s a good thing I enjoy Ms Burrows’ work because I would buy this title based on the cover alone.
I’d just note that in the first Hidden Legacy book (not this one), the hero kidnaps and threatens the heroine with torture (slash actually tortures her? I don’t remember fully). It put me off completely and upset me, but I’m pretty sensitive about alpha heroes and that sort of scene gets to me for a number of reasons. I also think Ilona Andrews’ writing just doesn’t work for me as I’ve never really clicked with any of their books despite being a fantasy romance fan; they’re always recommended to me on the basis of other books I like. However, I think it’s worth a warning if you feel you might struggle to get on board with the romance too!
@GraceElizabeth and those who haven’t read Ilona Andrews.
Just want to say that the “torture” scene in Hidden Legacy, while it does start with a kidnapping, is more of interrogation than torture and it is intense, but Nevada basically kicks Rogan’s ass. This is a pattern in Andrews’ books. The hero is usually an alpha–occasionally alphahole–frequently a bad boy who gets thoroughly schooled and/or rescued by the heroine at several point(s) during the novel. While I don’t have a problem with beta heroes, they are not my crack and some are kind of bland for my taste; actually that goes for heroines too. “Not likable” is not a deal breaker for me; it’s more of a recommendation. So I love Andrews because I’m totally here for the bad behavior and the ass-kicking. Also the nastier a character is at the outset, the more room there is for growth, and I think Ilona Andrews does character development really well.
While I understand your dislike of this particular element in Andrews’ work and would never the question the validity or any reader’s response to a book, I wanted to give an alternate point of view and a little additional context for someone who might not have read this particular author.
My One and Only Duke has some of the most intense opening chapters of any romance I’ve read in a long, long time. The whole book is terrific but the opening scenes where we are in the hero’s head as he prepares himself for his execution are really excellent. It is not maudlin but it is incredibly emotional and gets the reader in the story immediately.
