Next Year in Havana

Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton is $1.99! This was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick and I’m so happy Reese is showing some attention to romance and romance-adjacent titles. This book has dual timelines: 2017 Miami and 1958 Havana. Have you read this one?
After the death of her beloved grandmother, a Cuban-American woman travels to Havana, where she discovers the roots of her identity–and unearths a family secret hidden since the revolution…
Havana, 1958. The daughter of a sugar baron, nineteen-year-old Elisa Perez is part of Cuba’s high society, where she is largely sheltered from the country’s growing political unrest–until she embarks on a clandestine affair with a passionate revolutionary…
Miami, 2017. Freelance writer Marisol Ferrera grew up hearing romantic stories of Cuba from her late grandmother Elisa, who was forced to flee with her family during the revolution. Elisa’s last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth.
Arriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba’s tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate. When more family history comes to light and Marisol finds herself attracted to a man with secrets of his own, she’ll need the lessons of her grandmother’s past to help her understand the true meaning of courage.

The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky is $2.99! It’s also a Kindle Daily Deal. This is the first book in the Olympus Unbound. Sarah gave the first book a B grade. I highly recommend reading Sarah’s review to get a full sense of whether this book may be for you.
When I started reading it, I had a really difficult time putting it down. The world building made for addictive reading, even when I was reading things I usually don’t read.

With the NYPD out of its depth, Selene vows to hunt the killer on her own. This historical romance involves a hero and heroine hiding their identities from one another. A few readers mentioned that they couldn’t get invested in the characters, blaming the dialogue. However, others really loved the heroine and her headstrong characteristics. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

A Marriage Made in Scandal by Elisa Braden is 99c! This is part of the Rescued from Ruin historical romance series. I remember seeing this author pop up on our Underrated Authors Rec League. Readers warn that this book references events that happened in previous ones, so reading in order may be more beneficial.
Wanted: A countess for the most feared lord in London
With a family legacy tainted by murder and madness, Phineas Brand, the Earl of Holstoke, is having a devil of a time securing a proper wife—or even an improper one. Society misses faint at the sight of him. Matchmaking mamas scurry to avoid him. Only one woman is bold enough to keep drawing near, and she’s more scandalous than he is.Caution: A lady’s brazen ways may lead to ruin
Lady Eugenia Huxley knows all about running aground in the marriage mart, thanks to a scandal involving a footman and too much drink. No matter. She’ll gladly pursue millinery over matrimony. But when her sister’s spurned suitor returns to London in search of a wife, she can’t resist offering him a bit of courtship advice, even if the chilly, brilliant, honorable Lord Holstoke does give her shivers—heated, head-to-toe shivers that are anything but fearful.Danger: This match may be combustible
After a series of vicious murders brings suspicion to Holstoke’s door, Eugenia risks everything to be his alibi. The only rational remedy is to marry the minx before she generates another scandal. Yet, the dangers don’t end at the altar. A poisonous enemy coils ever closer, threatening the woman who awakens his soul. How far will he go to protect her? That may be the greatest danger of all.Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Love Elisa Braden! I learned of her through the comments on this website 🙂 historical romance was my gateway into romance, but I have had time finding historicals that work for me lately. These ones were like a breath of fresh air. Cannot recommend enough!
Miami 2017?

Next Year in Havana is great for those who love history (if you don’t, you may find it laborious to get through). It’s ultra, ultra light on the romance.
I hope she continues to include more romance and romance-adjacent titles, too. There’s so much women (and men and teens) can gain from reading romance novels, and it’s a shame there’s a stigma around it for some people.
@Nicolette I take it that the romance set in the past does not have a HEA?
I read Next Year, it was a little bit of a slog to go through but definitely good on the history.
I loved Next Year In Havana and the follow up When We Left Cuba is just as good!
Just FYI if someone is considering it- Next Year in Havana is eligible for the $5 Wish List credit from Amazon that was mentioned here last week.
I’ve been eyeing it for awhile and with the credit it was free (yay!!) and according to the details of the Amazon deal the remaining credit is still available to use toward another book.
SB Sarah did an author interview with Chanel Cleeton about Next Year in Havana.

I know I’m in the minority, but I did not like ‘Next Year In Havana’. I love history, I love romance, but I could barely get halfway through that book.
I loved Next Year in Havana and enjoyed learning more about what occurred in Cuba during the revolution that ultimately ousted Batista. To Claudia’s question, there are two time lines to the story, one does end with an HEA (and I was really rooting for them) and one doesn’t. But the latter is very understandable and suited the story.
