HaBO: Heroine Must Stop Sister from Eloping

This HaBO request comes from Jyoti, who is searching for this contemporary romance:

This book is contemporary romance with a love/hate relationship.

I don’t remember anything about the author or the cover, but I’m 100% sure that written after 2005.

The heroine gets a letter from her sister saying she is eloping. She have to stop the elopement because of some family thing (event? crisis?) and the only guy who can help is groom’s best friend or younger brother.

I remember a scene where they kiss for first time after it rains/in the rain, but I’m not sure about this detail.

Who know this one?

I was just reading Cassandra at the Wedding, which this is definitely not. It’s a sort of cross between Plath and Salinger, highly recommended if anyone wants a novel with a heroine trying to stop her sister from eloping written in the 60s (with lesbians, and all the angst, plus mental illness!) instead of this romance.

It’s been a while since I read it, but could it be Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella? The older sister has try to stop her younger sister from consummating the marriage after a quick wedding and the groom’s friend is helping her. A lot of the book takes place in Greek (I think) islands. Your description reminded me of this book.

  3. Chloe says:

I was going to say Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella. It sounds very similar.

  4. Katie says:

I also thought of Kinsella’s Wedding Night. Can’t remember the couple’s first kiss, but they definitely clashed. Not sure if it’s the right book.

  5. Paige N says:

Chiming in to agree with Wedding Night.

  6. Vanessa says:

I think I maybe read this somewhat recently but I can’t figure it out from my goodreads… was the outdoor kiss in the rain when she was helping someone (maybe his fiancée or family member) try on dresses and she went outside and was standing in the rain getting soaking wet when he came upon her? Maybe an Eloisa James or Lisa Kleypas series?

  7. Amelia says:

The Accidental Abduction by Darcie Wilde (published 2014) has a heroine rushing to stop her sister’s elopement. I abandonded it a while ago, so not sure about rain kisses.

  8. Karin says:

The Accidental Abduction is a very fun read, but it’s a historical, so not the HABO.

  9. Ellie says:

My One and Only by Kristan Higgins has some of these elements. They have the love/hate relationship because they are divorced and her sister gets engaged to his (younger?) brother. She wants to stop them from marrying. There is a road trip.

  10. Sandra says:

Not the book, but the classic have to stop the elopement….Devil’s Cub by Georgette Heyer.

On a side note, why do people announce elopements? Isn’t the whole point to get married without telling anyone? For reasons. Not just because it’s not anybody else’s business.

  11. BellaInAus says:

    Sandra,
I’ve always assumed that the reason for leaving the note was to assure those left behind that the elopee hadn’t been abducted by aliens.
Or else it was a “I’ve run off to marry Raoul the Pool Boy, by the time you read this it will be too late, nyah, nyah, nyah.”

  12. Jyoti says:

I think I messing up plot because I remembered about this book in flashes.

So I took an hour and tried to remember something else so what I got was the sister leaves the letter for the protagonist as they are either from a political family or business family and the parents are making the wedding a big media affair which the bride and groom don’t want so they run to Las Vegas in order to have a small private affair.

And it’s job of the protagonist to get them back before the wedding date. The hero is the best man and the only one who can help the protagonist.( I am still not sure if the hero is the best friend or younger brother)
As for the kiss in the rain scene I think it happens after they are both drunk (not really sure) and the kiss in the rain is like in heroine bucket list or something.

I also think this happens after all four of them go out to Casino or pub or somewhere fun.

The book is not The Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella.
