  • A Natural History of Dragons

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

RECOMMENDED: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is $2.99! It’s a Kindle Daily Deal that is being price-matched. Be sure to check out the other deals today! This is the first book in the Lady Trent series, which Carrie really loves. Readers say the book is pretty awesome in terms of concept, but they surprisingly wanted more dragons. Have you read this book or series?

You, dear reader, continue at your own risk. It is not for the faint of heart—no more so than the study of dragons itself. But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon’s presence, even for the briefest of moments—even at the risk of one’s life—is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten. . . .

All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. She is the remarkable woman who brought the study of dragons out of the misty shadows of myth and misunderstanding into the clear light of modern science. But before she became the illustrious figure we know today, there was a bookish young woman whose passion for learning, natural history, and, yes, dragons defied the stifling conventions of her day.

Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, her prospects, and her fragile flesh and bone to satisfy her scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love and happiness despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the perilous mountains of Vystrana, where she made the first of many historic discoveries that would change the world forever.

  • The Pages of the Mind

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy is $2.51 on Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a fantasy romance with an arranged marriage. Readers loved the scholarly heroine, but found that the second half of the book had a very different feel than the first half. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

    An Orphan’s Throne

Magic has broken free over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human…and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos.

Dafne Mailloux is no adventurer–she’s a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne’s ability with languages, her way of winnowing the useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught her.

Dafne never thought to need those skills again. But she accepts her duty. Until her journey drops her into the arms of a barbarian king. He speaks no tongue she knows but that of power, yet he recognizes his captive as a valuable pawn. Dafne must submit to a wedding of alliance, becoming a prisoner-queen in a court she does not understand. If she is to save herself and her country, she will have to learn to read the heart of a wild stranger. And there are more secrets written there than even Dafne could suspect…

  • Hollywood on Tap

Hollywood on Tap by Avery Flynn

RECOMMENDEDHollywood on Tap by Avery Flynn is 99c! This is the second book in the Sweet Salvation Brewery series. The first book, Enemies on Tap ( A | BN | K | G | AB ), wasn’t too bad. A little fluffy. A little overdramatic at times. But it was an enjoyable, quick read. However, I was really excited for the second book seeing as how the hero is a quiet, lumberjack of a man (not a real lumberjack, but you know…big, beefy, and mmm) and the heroine is a bit of a Type-A workaholic. My kind of pairing. I definitely liked this one more than the first in terms of character chemistry, though I felt having the hero be a former Hollywood celebrity was unnecessary.

For years, Sean O’Dell has hidden his past as a Hollywood heartthrob from everyone at the Sweet Salvation Brewery. However, the arrival of nosey efficiency expert Natalie Sweet threatens the status quo. It doesn’t help that with her glasses, buttoned-up sweaters and always pulled-back hair that she’s uncovered one secret already: His attraction for hot librarian types.

Natalie has had enough of the strong-and-silent Sean submarining her efforts to change the brewery for the better. She’s ready to do whatever it takes to make her vision a reality, even if that means taking down the pig-headed and too-hot-for-his-own-good brewmaster.

Sizzling attraction battles stubborn determination as Natalie and Sean go head to head in a battle that’s anything but business as usual.

  • The Last True Vampire

The Last True Vampire by Kate Baxter

The Last True Vampire by Kate Baxter is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance with, as the title suggest, vampires. A few readers mentioned being unable to get interested in the characters and their romance. However, many loved the heroine and her attitude. I’ve read a few of the later books in the series and enjoyed those more.

As Michael’s eyes lit on a female not twenty feet away, he knew without a doubt that it was her blood that called to him and her scent that had awakened him. This female had tethered his soul and returned it to him.

    Soul Survivor

He is the last of his race. The one true king of the vampires. Michael Aristov roams the nightclubs of L.A. after dark, haunted by his past and driven by his hunger. The last of the Ancient Ones, he alone has survived the destruction of his race at the hands of the slayers. Now he is forced to hunt and feed like a common vampire, a creature of lust. Nothing in this world can fulfill his needs…until he meets a woman who’s everything he’s ever wanted. And more.

    Sweet Salvation

Her name is Claire Thompson. Her blood is so sweet, so intoxicating—the smell alone draws Michael to her like a moth to the flame. Sly, sexy, and seductive, Claire seems to be the only mortal who can satisfy his craving and seal his fate…forever. Can she be trusted? From their very first kiss, the last true vampire sweeps Claire into a world in which darkness rules desire—and where falling in love is the greatest danger of all…

  1. Ren Benton says:

Heads up that the Jeffe Kennedy book is a spinoff of another series and (I thought) did not work AT ALL as an entry point. Too much “Who are these people and what the hell are they talking about?” without a previous foundation of worldbuilding knowledge.

  2. Denise says:

Thank you so much on the Natural History of Dragons! I love the cover and the premise. –goes off to one click–

I was one of the readers who loved the scholarly heroine in Pages of the Mind. My take on the book differs from Ren’s. It worked very well for me as both a stand-alone and an entry point to the series. While there were references made to the other books, I was fine with reading it as a single story, and the heroine is still one of my favorite fictional protagonists.

  3. Qualisign says:

WAIT! Isn’t “The Last True Vampire” cover the same guy as the Flynn Ryder lookalike from the coat pr0n post??? @DiscoDollyDeb hit it dead on.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Qualisign: After I posted that Flynn Ryder comment, I took a quick browse through my kindle and found him (or an amazing look-alike) on two covers before I got out of the E’s! I knew I’d seen him on romance covers before!

  5. Heather says:

For those of you who read Marie Brennan and needed more dragons, there seems to be some sort of dragon theme going on with Amazon’s Kindle Daily Deals today. In addition to A Natural History of Dragons, there are at least nine other offerings with dragons either in the title or pictured fetchingly on the cover.

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Mercedes Lackey’s THE FAIRY GODMOTHER (which Aarya Marsden said was her introduction to romance novels) is $2.99 in the kindle store right now.

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

One more: CD Reiss’s complete Edge series (ROUGH EDGE, ON THE EDGE, CUTTING EDGE, BROKEN EDGE, and OVER THE EDGE) is free in the kindle store right now. Reiss was one of the writers I recommended on the underrated writers Rec League. This is the story of two military doctors who meet during the Iraq War. It’s very well-written, but—be forewarned—it is on the dark side of Reiss’s work.

  8. Kareni says:

I see Jo Walton’s Tooth and Claw is also a Kindle Daily Deal. It’s been described to me as Pride and Prejudice with Dragons.

  9. Kareni says:

I recently read Marie Brennan’s Natural History of Dragons. I enjoyed it, but I’m not particularly inclined to read on in the series.

  10. Aarya says:

@DiscoDollyDeb: thanks for letting me know! I snagged a digital copy. 🙂

  11. Maeve says:

The Natural History of Dragons books form one of my favorite series! There are indeed more dragons (and a wonderful slow-burn romance) in later books.

  12. Msb says:

I loved the Lady Trent series, and Brennan will soon issue another book in the same world, but with a different protagonist. All 5 of the Lady Trents are good, and they are beautifully illustrated. Walton’s Tooth and Claw is a hoot, too.

  13. Ruth Lafler says:

My sister gave me “The Natural History of Dragons” and I ended up hating the heroine and not wanting to read any more of the series. It’s great that she’s passionate about what she does, but after the third or fourth time she did something stupid and reckless that someone else ended up paying for I’d had enough. The dragons were cool, though, as was the alternate Victorian era setting. I might give a new series with a different protagonist a look, though.
